Adaption Of Catechol And Reversible Addition-Fragmentation Chain-Transfer (Raft) Chemistries For Water-Based Applications, Olabode Oyeneye

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Incorporating the binding chemistry of catechol functionality with RAFT chemistry offers a facile and simplified approach for developing a suite of new 2D and 3D hybrid materials with tailored morphologies. Leveraging both chemistries by synthesizing catechol-end functionalized RAFT agents and catechol-containing monomeric species for RAFT (co)polymerization, this dissertation examined a new series of advanced materials that were designed for water-based applications including model flocculants, thermoresponsive hydrogels, adsorbents and underwater adhesives.

To prepare the RAFT agents, novel trithiocarbonates with several catechol end R groups (as postpolymerization anchors) were synthesized that differ in their carbonyl α-substituents (Dopa-CTAs). These materials were evaluated for …

A Performance Based Design Approach For Tall Buildings Under Wind Loading, Fouad Y. Elezaby Dec 2017

A Performance Based Design Approach For Tall Buildings Under Wind Loading, Fouad Y. Elezaby

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

The wind design of buildings is typically based on strength provisions under ultimate loads. This is unlike the ductility-based approach used in seismic design, which allows inelastic actions to take place in the structure under extreme seismic events. This research investigates the application of a similar concept in wind engineering. In seismic design, the elastic forces resulting from an extreme event of high return period are reduced by a load reduction factor. A load reduction factor is chosen by the designer and accordingly a certain ductility capacity needs to be achieved in the structure. Two reasons have triggered the investigation …

Assessment Of Dynamic Effect Of Transmission Line Conductor Longitudinal Reaction Due To Downburst Loading, Ibrahim Ibrahim Dec 2017

Assessment Of Dynamic Effect Of Transmission Line Conductor Longitudinal Reaction Due To Downburst Loading, Ibrahim Ibrahim

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Due to the locality and non-stationary nature of downburst wind loading events, their effect on the structural response of transmission line structures is of special nature that differs from conventional atmospheric boundary layer wind loading. Acknowledging such difference, the current thesis aims to quantify the dynamic effect associated with downburst loading on transmission line systems. To achieve that, several steps had to be realized, including experimentally verifying the numerical model used for analysis using wind field that was generated using computational fluid dynamics. The verified model was extended from model scale to full scale, where the wind field used for …

Modelling Of Future Flood Risk Across Canada Under Climate Change, Ayushi Gaur

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Climate change has induced changes in key climate variables and hydrological cycle in Canada. In this study, future runoff projections made by 21 GCMs following four Representative Concentration Pathways (RCPs) are used as inputs into a macro-scaled hydrodynamic model: CaMa-Flood to simulate 25 km resolution daily streamflow across Canada for historical (1961-2005) and future (2061-2100) time-periods. Future changes in flood-hazard as a consequence of changes in flooding frequencies of historical 100-year and 250-year return period flood events, and changes in the month of occurrence of extreme flows are analyzed. Changes in flood risk at Canada’s 100 most populous cities and …

Optimal Decomposition Strategy For Tree Edit Distance, Shaofeng Jiang Dec 2017

Optimal Decomposition Strategy For Tree Edit Distance, Shaofeng Jiang

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

An ordered labeled tree is a tree where the left-to-right order among siblings is significant. Given two ordered labeled trees, the edit distance between them is the minimum cost edit operations that convert one tree to the other.

In this thesis, we present an algorithm for the tree edit distance problem by using the optimal tree decomposition strategy. By combining the vertical compression of trees with optimal decomposition we can significantly reduce the running time of the algorithm. We compare our method with other methods both theoretically and experimentally. The test results show that our strategies on compressed trees are …

Study Of Motion Of Agglomerates Through A Fluidized Bed, Muhammad Owais Iqbal Bhatti Dec 2017

Study Of Motion Of Agglomerates Through A Fluidized Bed, Muhammad Owais Iqbal Bhatti

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Formation of agglomerates in Fluid CokersTM can cause operating problems, such as excessive shed fouling, which can lead to premature unit shut down. Better understanding of how agglomerates move through a fluidized bed can help improve the design and operation of Fluid CokersTM and minimize the risk of agglomerates reaching regions where they cause problems.

To identify key factors in agglomerates motion in a fluidized bed, a new two-dimensional (2D) Radioactive Particle Tracking (RPT) method was developed which tracks model agglomerates motion. In conjunction, a tribo-electric method was used to determine bubble flow distribution in the fluidized bed. …

Thermo-Hydro-Mechanical Analysis Of Evaporation From Unsaturated Soils, Seyed Morteza Mousavi Dec 2017

Thermo-Hydro-Mechanical Analysis Of Evaporation From Unsaturated Soils, Seyed Morteza Mousavi

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

ABSTRACT

Estimating evaporation from unsaturated soil is important for many applications including agriculture, climate, hydrology, water resources, saturated and unsaturated groundwater flow, slope stability, and soil covers. As an example, the long term performance of soil covers, which are widely used in mining and landfill applications to protect the environment, strongly depends on evaporation from their surfaces.

Evaporation depends on both moisture flow within an unsaturated soil mass, which is generally coupled with heat flow, and void ratio and hydraulic and air conductivities, which are in turn affected by stress and strain and resulting soil settlement. This makes thermo-hydro-mechanical (THM) …

A New Single-Phase Single-Stage Ac-Dc Stacked Flyback Converter With Active Clamp Zvs, Yuntong Li Dec 2017

A New Single-Phase Single-Stage Ac-Dc Stacked Flyback Converter With Active Clamp Zvs, Yuntong Li

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Single-stage AC-DC converters integrate an AC-DC front-end converter with a DC-DC back-end converter. Compared with conventional two-stage AC-DC converters, single-stage AC-DC converters use less components and only one controller, which is used to regulate the output voltage. As a result, the cost, size and complexity of AC-DC converters can be reduced, but single-stage converters do not perform as well as two-stage converters, and most have drawbacks that are related to the fact that the DC bus voltage is not controlled an can become excessive.

A new single-phase single-stage AC-DC converter that uses stacked flyback converters is proposed in this thesis. …

Bio-oil upgrading via hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) was investigated using anisole, a model compound, in a novel Externally Agitated (EA) reactor which is expected to enhance gas-liquid-solid mixing. Operating conditions were established based on anisole HDO with 10 wt.% Ni on silica, γ-alumina, and δ-alumina while varying temperatures between 160 to 280oC, and reaction times between 30 – 90 minutes. Mild temperatures of 220oC and 45 minutes for reaction time with γ-alumina were selected for subsequent work since γ-alumina demonstrated the highest HDO activity. HDO was then investigated with varying Ni-Cu and Ni loadings. Despite the improved reducibility …

Optical Fibre-Based Force Sensing Needle Driver For Minimally Invasive Surgery, Pouya Soltani Zarrin Dec 2017

Optical Fibre-Based Force Sensing Needle Driver For Minimally Invasive Surgery, Pouya Soltani Zarrin

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Minimally invasive surgery has been limited from its inception by insufficient haptic feedback to surgeons. The loss of haptic information threatens patients safety and results in longer operation times. To address this problem, various force sensing systems have been developed to provide information about tool–tissue interaction forces. However, the provided results for axial and grasping forces have been inaccurate in most of these studies due to considerable amount of error and uncertainty in their force acquisition method. Furthermore, sterilizability of the sensorized instruments plays a pivotal role in accurate measurement of forces inside a patient's body. Therefore, the objective of …

Decellularized adipose tissue (DAT) represents a promising adipogenic bioscaffold for applications in soft tissue augmentation or reconstruction. With the goal of investigating the role of syngeneic donor adipose-derived stem/stromal cells (ASCs) and host myeloid cells during in vivo adipose tissue regeneration, transgenic reporter mouse strains were used to track these cell populations within ASC-seeded and unseeded DAT scaffolds. Donor ASCs were obtained from dsRed transgenic mice. These cells were shown to express characteristic cell surface markers, and multilineage differentiation capacity was confirmed. To facilitate cell tracking, DAT scaffolds were subcutaneously implanted into MacGreen mice in which myeloid cells express enhanced …

A Novel Ac-Dc Interleaved Zcs-Pwm Boost Converter, Ramtin Rasoulinezhad Dec 2017

A Novel Ac-Dc Interleaved Zcs-Pwm Boost Converter, Ramtin Rasoulinezhad

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

AC-DC converters with input power factor correction (PFC) that consist of two or more interleaved boost converter modules are popular in industry. PFC is a must in today’s AC-DC converters as their input current must meet harmonic standards set by regulatory agencies. With interleaving, the input current of each module can make to be discontinuous and the size of their input inductors since interleaving can reduce the high ripple in each module and produce a net input current with a ripple that is comparable to that achieved with a single boost converter module with a large input inductor.

In high- …

Skills Assessment In Arthroscopic Surgery By Processing Kinematic, Force, And Bio-Signal Data, Behnaz Poursartip

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Arthroscopic surgery is a type of Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS) performed in human joints, which can be used for diagnostic or treatment purposes. The nature of this type of surgery makes it such that surgeons require extensive training to become experts at performing surgical tasks in tight environments and with reduced force feedback. MIS increases the possibility of erroneous actions, which could result in injury to the patient. Many of these injuries can be prevented by implementing appropriate training and skills assessment methods.

Various performance methods, including Global Rating Scales and technical measures, have been proposed in the literature. However, …

A Comparison Between Different Snubbers For Flyback Converters, Adel Alganidi Dec 2017

A Comparison Between Different Snubbers For Flyback Converters, Adel Alganidi

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

The DC-DC flyback power converter is widely used in low power commercial and industrial applications ( > 150 W) such as in computers, telecom, consumer electronics because it is one of the simplest and least expensive converter topologies with transformer isolation. Its main power circuit consists of just a semiconductor device like a MOSFET operating as a switch, a transformer, an output diode and an output filter capacitor. The converter switch, however, is susceptible to high voltage spikes due to the interaction between its output capacitance and the leakage inductance of the transformer. These spikes can exceed the ratings of the …

Hybrid Attitude Control And Estimation On So(3), Soulaimane Berkane Nov 2017

Hybrid Attitude Control And Estimation On So(3), Soulaimane Berkane

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

This thesis presents a general framework for hybrid attitude control and estimation design on the Special Orthogonal group SO(3). First, the attitude stabilization problem on SO(3) is considered. It is shown that, using a min-switch hybrid control strategy designed from a family of potential functions on SO(3), global exponential stabilization on SO(3) can be achieved when this family of potential functions satisfies certain properties. Then, a systematic methodology to construct these potential functions is developed. The proposed hybrid control technique is applied to the attitude tracking problem for rigid body systems. A smoothing mechanism is proposed to filter out the …

Free-Surface Wall-Jet Flow At Moderate Reynolds Number As Applied To Slot And Blade Coating, Mohammad Tanvir Hossain

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

The flow of a two-dimensional steady wall jet observed in the slot and blade coating processes has been examined theoretically near the channel exit. The Newtonian free surface jet emerges from a channel and deposits onto an infinite moving wall with an adverse or favorable pressure gradient applied inside the channel. The Reynolds number considered is within the moderate range, and fully developed Couette-Poisueille flow conditions are assumed to prevail far upstream inside the channel. The effects of inertia and pressure gradient on the velocity, the shape of the free surface, and the stress are emphasized. It is found that …

The tracking arm was calibrated, and the 3D image registered to the scanner. Tracked and imaged needle positions were compared to assess accuracy and a patient-specific phantom procedure guided with the system.

Median/mean linear and volumetric error was ±1.1% and …

Partial Material Strength Reduction Factors For Aci 318, Tong Zhang Nov 2017

Partial Material Strength Reduction Factors For Aci 318, Tong Zhang

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

The strength reduction factors, phi, defined in ACI 318-14 for different structural actions and elements lead to inconsistent results. This study proposes partial material strength reduction factors for concrete, phic, and reinforcing steel, phis, that yield similar design strengths and more consistent reliability indices. Three structural actions are investigated: moment; shear; and, combined moment and axial force. The first-order, second-moment method is used to compute reliability indices for moment and shear, and Monte Carlo simulation is used for combined moment and axial force. The statistical parameters assumed for the professional factor for shear strength significantly impact …

Behaviour Of Pre-Stressed Concrete Transmission Poles Under High Intensity Wind, Ahmed M. Ibrahim Nov 2017

Behaviour Of Pre-Stressed Concrete Transmission Poles Under High Intensity Wind, Ahmed M. Ibrahim

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Among different types of electrical transmission line structures, pre-stressed concrete transmission poles have the advantages of low installation and maintenance costs, appropriate delivery time, and high corrosion resistivity. Typically, these poles are designed to resist synoptic wind loading. Current design codes do not consider the effect of high intensity wind (HIW) events in the form of downbursts and tornadoes on pre-stressed concrete poles despite the fact that those weather events are the main cause of failure of transmission line structures. The first comprehensive study conducted to assess the behaviour of pre-stressed concrete transmission poles under HIW is presented in this …

Exploiting Temporal Image Information In Minimally Invasive Surgery, Jonathan Mcleod Nov 2017

Exploiting Temporal Image Information In Minimally Invasive Surgery, Jonathan Mcleod

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Minimally invasive procedures rely on medical imaging instead of the surgeons direct vision. While preoperative images can be used for surgical planning and navigation, once the surgeon arrives at the target site real-time intraoperative imaging is needed. However, acquiring and interpreting these images can be challenging and much of the rich temporal information present in these images is not visible. The goal of this thesis is to improve image guidance for minimally invasive surgery in two main areas. First, by showing how high-quality ultrasound video can be obtained by integrating an ultrasound transducer directly into delivery devices for beating heart …

Development Of An Active Finger Motion Simulator: With In-Vitro Assessments Of Tendon Loads And Joint Kinematics, Mohammad Haddara

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Musculoskeletal injuries of the finger far outnumber those of other joints, and while in-vitro motion simulators are useful for studying joint biomechanics and evaluating surgical repairs, considerably less simulator development has been reported for the finger compared to other joints. Replication of active musculoskeletal movement during in-vitro testing has been shown to be more representative of in-vivo motion patterns, and closed-loop motion controllers are the current state-of-the-art for in-vitro kinematics studies. However, an in-vitro motion simulator with closed-loop tendon load control and simultaneous tendon excursion control has not yet been reported for the finger. This thesis outlines the design and …
