Multi-Disciplinary Engineering Research And Development Skills For Mining - A Case Study, C Cook, S Van Duin, Ian Porter

Christopher Cook

This paper discusses how advanced manufacturing technology (AMT), which is fundamentally reliant on and developed via multi-disciplinary skills, has benefitted non-mining industries, and what lessons can be derived from this experience to benefit the mining industry, particularly underground coal mining. Examples of AMT use in 'conventional' industry, some drawn from the more than 25 years experience in many different industries of the Automation and Robotics team at the University of Wollongong, are described to show typical benefits, risks and opportunities expected in using AMT. Applying AMT to mining brings many unique challenges and this paper expands on these and then …

Depth Maps Generation Through Thresholding In A Robotics System, H Shi, Christopher Cook Aug 2012

Depth Maps Generation Through Thresholding In A Robotics System, H Shi, Christopher Cook

Christopher Cook

The project described in this paper aims to develop a simple but efficient method for mapping the depth of an object used in an industrial application. In order to produce the depth and cross-sectional images of an object the intensity threshold for converting the grey image to a binary image is varied. This operation will not produce a satisfactory result when the object is observed in air. The result will be however significantly different when the object is located in a colour liquid. Since the refraction of the light in the liquid varies with the depth, the intensity of the …

Extracting 3-Dimensional Information From Single Camera Vision System, H Shi, Christopher Cook, Fazel Naghdy Aug 2012

Extracting 3-Dimensional Information From Single Camera Vision System, H Shi, Christopher Cook, Fazel Naghdy

Christopher Cook

In this paper, a new approach for extracting three-dimensional information from single camera vision system is presented. Only one plan view of the object will be obtained from a camera when the object is placed in the air, even if the threshold of the camera is varied. The result will be however significantly different when the object is located in a colour liquid. It is due to high absorption of the light in a colour liquid. The amount of absorption varies with the depth of the liquid. This allows different plan views related to the depth of an object to …

Frequency Response Of Polypyrrole Trilayer Actuator Displacement, Stephen John, Gursel Alici, Christopher David Cook Aug 2012

Frequency Response Of Polypyrrole Trilayer Actuator Displacement, Stephen John, Gursel Alici, Christopher David Cook

Christopher Cook

Conducting polymer trilayers are attractive for use in functional devices, given low actuation voltages, operation in air and potentially useful stresses and strains; however, their dynamic behavior must be understood from an engineering perspective before they can be effectively incorporated into a design. As a step towards the identification of the actuator dynamics, frequency response analysis has been performed to identify the magnitude and phase shift of displacement in response to a sinusoidal voltage input. The low damping of the trilayer operating in air and the use of a laser displacement sensor has allowed the frequency response to be continuously …

Modelling Of Polypyrrole Actuators, Mehrdad Bahrami Samani, Geoffrey Spinks, Philip Whitten, Christopher Cook

Christopher Cook

Conducting polymers (CP) are a promising area in the field of micro actuators, and have potential applications in micro robotics. Their properties are modelled as having an electro-chemical active component and a passive viscoelastic component. Methods exist to model the passive component as a configuration of springs and dashpots and the electro-active effects as a strain generator. Typically, the strain is assumed to be proportional to the charge transferred, and the two components are assumed to be independent. We show that there is a significant interaction between the two components for polypyrrole actuators, by observing the dynamic elastic modulus whilst …

Computer Control Of Machines With Friction For Precise Motion, Simon Webb, Zheng Li, Christopher David Cook Aug 2012

Computer Control Of Machines With Friction For Precise Motion, Simon Webb, Zheng Li, Christopher David Cook

Christopher Cook

We study the problem of precise control of machines with static and Coulomb friction. An experimental X-Y testbed built for testing various control methods is described and initial experimental results are presented. A simple pole placement controller is designed for computer control of the X-Y testbed based on a generalised sampled-data hold. Robustness and stability of the controller are analysed. Simulation suggests that this controller is able to achieve precise position control even when parameters of both the dynamics of the machine and the characteristics of friction are unknown

Robust Adaptive Control For Industrial Robots - A Decentralized System Method, M Liu, Christopher Cook Aug 2012

Robust Adaptive Control For Industrial Robots - A Decentralized System Method, M Liu, Christopher Cook

Christopher Cook

An adaptive control approach is presented for the tracking control of industrial robots. The approach utilizes the fact that a robot model can be described by equations that are linear in the system's unknown parameters. Taking uncertainties into account, the resulting controller has the property of robustness. The proof of stability and analytical results of the boundness of position tracking errors are given. By introducing filter operations in state measurements, the approach avoids the difficulty of measuring the accelerations of the robots' actuators. Simulation results are also presented

Novel Tooth Design For A Tubular Linear Motor For Machine Tool Axis, Philip Commins, Jeffrey Moscrop, Christopher Cook Aug 2012

Novel Tooth Design For A Tubular Linear Motor For Machine Tool Axis, Philip Commins, Jeffrey Moscrop, Christopher Cook

Christopher Cook

Permanent magnet tubular linear motors have shown potential for use as direct drives in high precision machine tools. These devices are capable of replacing the traditional ball screw, given their ability to overcome or reduce many of the fundamental mechanical properties that limit the precision performance of the ball screw. However, given the desire from industry to increase speed and acceleration, the physical size of the motor must be minimised while maintaining high force output to increase bandwidth in high precision applications. This paper presents a new optimal tooth design to reduce the frame size of a slotted tubular linear …
