Effect Of Microreactor Geometry In Performance Of Catalytic Microreactor Of Hydrogen Production By Cfd Modeling, Mohsen Behnam, Ali Fazeli, Shohreh Fatemi, Yadolah Mortazavi, A. Khodadai

Ali Fazeli

Hydrogen production from steam reforming of methanol for fuel cell application was modeled in a wall coated micro channel reactor by CFD approach. Heat of steam reforming was supplied from catalytic total oxidation (TOX) of methanol in neighboring channel of steamreforming (SR) channel and conduct from TOX to SR channel through metal divider wall of the channels. Heat integration was compared in zigzag and straight geometry of microreactor by CFD modeling. The model is 2 dimensional, steady state and containing five zones: TOX fluid, TOX catalyst layer, steel wall of the channel, SR catalyst layer, SR fluid. Set of partial …

Enhanced Recovery Of Mechanical Function In The Canine Heart By Seeding An Extracellular Matrix Patch With Mesenchymal Stem Cells Committed To A Cardiac Lineage., Glenn Gaudette, Irina Potapova, Sergey Doronin, Damon Kelly, Amy Rosen, Adam Schuldt, Zhongju Lu, Paul Kochupura, Richard Robinson, Michael Rosen, Peter Brink, Ira Cohen

Glenn R. Gaudette

The need to regenerate tissue is paramount, especially for the heart that lacks the ability to regenerate after injury. The urinary bladder extracellular matrix (ECM), when used to repair a right ventricular defect, successfully regenerated some mechanical function. The objective of the current study was to determine whether the regenerative effect of ECM could be improved by seeding the patch with human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs) enhanced to differentiate down a cardiac linage. hMSCs were used to form three-dimensional spheroids. The expression of cardiac proteins was determined in cells exposed to the spheroid formation and compared with nonmanipulated hMSCs. To …

The Role Of Science And Engineering In Water Regulation Over The Past 100 Years, James R. May, Patrick Clary

James R. May

This article explores how scientific and engineering principles are inexorably linked to the regulation of water. Scientists and engineers first discovered the link between disease and water sources in the mid-19th century. Over the years, scientists and engineers have led the way to identifying water quality problems and their causes. These discoveries have directly contributed to the scope of water regulation in the United States and elsewhere. In addition, changes in water quality regulation have dictated the need for increasingly sophisticated water treatment technologies and engineers have been at the forefront of the development of these water control technologies. This …

Valley Splitting In Si Quantum Dots Embedded In Sige, Srikant Srinivasan Sep 2008

Valley Splitting In Si Quantum Dots Embedded In Sige, Srikant Srinivasan

Srikant Srinivasan

We examine energy spectra of Si quantum dots embedded in Si0.75Ge0.25 buffers using atomistic numerical calculations for dimensions relevant to qubit implementations. The valley degeneracy of the lowest orbital state is lifted and valley splitting fluctuates with monolayer frequency as a function of the dot thickness. For dot thicknesses ≤ 6 nm, valley splitting is found to be >150 μeV. Using the unique advantage of atomistic calculations, we analyze the effect of buffer disorder on valley splitting. Disorder in the buffer leads to the suppression of valley splitting by a factor of 2.5; the splitting fluctuates with ≈ 20 μeV …

Influence Of Hydrogel Mechanical Properties And Mesh Size On Vocal Fold Fibroblast Extracellular Matrix Production And Phenotype, Huimin Liao, Dany Munoz Pinto, Xin Qu, Yaping Hou, Melissa Grunlan, Mariah Hahn Aug 2008

Influence Of Hydrogel Mechanical Properties And Mesh Size On Vocal Fold Fibroblast Extracellular Matrix Production And Phenotype, Huimin Liao, Dany Munoz Pinto, Xin Qu, Yaping Hou, Melissa Grunlan, Mariah Hahn

Dany J. Munoz Pinto

Current clinical management of vocal fold (VF) scarring produces inconsistent and often suboptimal results. Researchers are investigating a number of alternative treatments for VF lamina propria (LP) scarring, including designer implant materials for functional LP regeneration. In the present study, we investigate the effects of the initial scaffold elastic modulus and mesh size on encapsulated VF fibroblast (VFF) extracellular matrix (ECM) production toward rational scaffold design. Poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate (PEGDA) hydrogels were selected for this study since their material properties, including mechanical properties, mesh size, degradation rate and bioactivity, can be tightly controlled and systematically modified. Porcine VFF were encapsulated …

Mira V: An Integrated System For Minimally Invasive Robot-Assisted Lung Brachytherapy, A. Trejos, A. Lin, S. Mohan, H. Bassan, C. Edirisinghe, R. Patel, C. Lewis, E. Yu, A. Fenster, R. Malthaner

Edward Yu

An integrated system for minimally invasive robot-assisted image-guided lung brachytherapy has been developed. The system incorporates an experimental setup for accurate radioactive seed placement with commercially available dosimetry planning software. The end result is a complete system that allows planning and executing a brachytherapy procedure with increased accuracy. The results of the in vitro seed placement evaluation show that seed misplacement has a significant effect on the volume receiving more than 200% of the dose (V200), and the minimum dosage received by 90% of the volume (D90).

Electrical, Structural, And Chemical Properties Of Semiconducting Metal Oxide Nanofiber Yarns, Darrell Reneker Mar 2008

Electrical, Structural, And Chemical Properties Of Semiconducting Metal Oxide Nanofiber Yarns, Darrell Reneker

Darrell Hyson Reneker

The electrical, structural, and chemical properties of twisted yarns of metal-oxide nanofibers, fabricated using a modified electrospinning technique, are investigated in this report. In particular, synthesized zinc oxide and nickel oxide yarns having diameters in the range of 4–40μm and lengths up to 10cm were characterized, whose constituent nanofibers had average diameters of 60–100nm. These yarns have one macroscopic dimension for handling while retaining some of the properties of nanofibers.

Anisotropic Contraction In Forisomes: Simple Models Won't Fit, Winfried Peters, Michael Knoblauch, Stephen Warmann, William Pickard, Amy Shen

Winfried S. Peters

Forisomes are ATP-independent, Ca2+-driven contractile protein bodies acting as reversible valves in the phloem of plants of the legume family. Forisome contraction is anisotropic, as shrinkage in length is associated with radial expansion and vice versa. To test the hypothesis that changes in length and width are causally related, we monitored Ca2+- and pH-dependent deformations in the exceptionally large forisomes of Canavalia gladiata by high-speed photography, and computed time-courses of derived geometric parameters (including volume and surface area). Soybean forisomes, which in the resting state resemble those of Canavalia geometrically but have less than 2% of the volume, were also …

Far-Field Subdiffraction Optical Microscopy Using Metamaterial Crystals: Theory And Simulations, Alessandro Salandrino, Nader Engheta Jan 2008

Far-Field Subdiffraction Optical Microscopy Using Metamaterial Crystals: Theory And Simulations, Alessandro Salandrino, Nader Engheta

Nader Engheta

Here we suggest and explore theoretically an idea for a far-field scanless optical microscopy with a subdiffraction resolution. We exploit the special dispersion characteristics of an anisotropic metamaterial crystal that is obliquely cut at its output plane, or has a curved output surface, in order to map the input field distribution onto the crystal’s output surface with a compressed angular spectrum, resulting in a "magnified" image. This can provide a far-field imaging system with a resolution beyond the diffraction limits while no scanning is needed.

Circuit Elements At Optical Frequencies: Nanoinductors, Nanocapacitors, And Nanoresistors, Nader Engheta, Alessandro Salandrino, Andrea Alù

Andrea Alù

We present the concept of circuit nanoelements in the optical domain using plasmonic and nonplasmonic nanoparticles. Three basic circuit elements, i.e., nanoinductors, nanocapacitors, and nanoresistors, are discussed in terms of small nanostructures with different material properties. Coupled nanoscale circuits and parallel and series combinations are also envisioned, which may provide road maps for the synthesis of more complex circuits in the IR and visible bands. Ideas for the optical implementation of right-handed and left-handed nanotransmission lines are also forecasted.
