Computer-Aided Weld Inspection By Fuzzy Modeling With Selected Features, Sean Najm Ghazavi
Computer-Aided Weld Inspection By Fuzzy Modeling With Selected Features, Sean Najm Ghazavi
LSU Master's Theses
This thesis develops a computer-aided weld inspection methodology based on fuzzy modeling with selected features. The proposed methodology employs several filter feature selection methods for selecting input variables and then builds fuzzy models with the selected features. Our fuzzy modeling method is based on a fuzzy c-means (FCM) variant for the generation of fuzzy terms sets. The implemented FCM variant differs from the original FCM method in two aspects: (1) the two end terms take the maximum and minimum domain values as their centers, and (2) all fuzzy terms are forced to be convex. The optimal number of terms and …

Characterization And Analysis Of Hybrid Electronic Materials For Molecular Based Devices, Sathish Thiruvengadam
LSU Master's Theses
The goal of this work is to characterize and to analyze hybrid electronic materials (HEMs) using fluorescence (FL) spectroscopy and conductive probe-atomic force microscopy (CP-AFM) in order to investigate the electrical and optical properties of these materials. Currently, research efforts to characterize novel organic materials for the determination of molecular level transport properties are of great interest.[6] One of the most interesting organic materials is the porphyrin molecule, which exhibits behavior useful for memory applications.[4] Colloidal CdS quantum dots (Q-CdS) capped with dioctyl sulfosuccinate (AOT) and thiol functionalized porphyrin molecules are explored for their potential application to next-generation hybrid electronic …

Production Well Operations Optimization In Water Distribution System Using Genetic Algorithm, Vineet Katiyar
LSU Master's Theses
The City of Chandler, Arizona lies in semi-arid area and the water resources management has been a major concern by the State citizen. There is always a need of optimizing the available water resources when the rate of demand constantly beats the rate of replenishment. In this study we have developed a management model to link the Chandler water distribution model (EPANET) with the Chandler groundwater flow model (MODFLOW) under an optimization framework (Genetic algorithm). The EPANET model supplied by the Chandler city municipal authority has several improper setting (pumping schedules, valves settings, pressure zones etc.). The original model has …
An Optimal Operational Policy For An Integrated Production-Delivery System Under Continuous Price Decrease, Deniz Mungan
An Optimal Operational Policy For An Integrated Production-Delivery System Under Continuous Price Decrease, Deniz Mungan
LSU Master's Theses
In today’s competitive world, the unit cost of a high-tech product declines significantly over its life cycle. An integrated inventory model for products experiencing continuous decrease in unit cost is studied in this research. In this integrated model a manufacturing facility purchases raw material from outside supplier at a fixed size and supplies a fixed quantity of finished products to a buyer periodically after using its production processes. Moreover, buyers demand frequent deliveries of small lots of finished products since the price is continuously decreasing, and this emphasizes the significance of just-in-time (JIT) inventory management for successful companies in technology-related …
Juvenile Crawfish (Procambarus Clarkii) Lc50 Mortality From South Louisiana Crude, Peanut And Mineral Oil, Okey Umejuru
Juvenile Crawfish (Procambarus Clarkii) Lc50 Mortality From South Louisiana Crude, Peanut And Mineral Oil, Okey Umejuru
LSU Master's Theses
Nearly every continent has species of crawfish that inhabit wetlands or are near coastal areas where petroleum and other oils are produced, transported, and accidentally released. Most crawfish cannot tolerate polluted water. Thus, they could serve as biomonitors of fossil fuel, biofuel, and other oil releases and assess potential negative impacts such oils have on wetland and coastal ecosystems. The objectives of this study were to estimate the acute toxicity of three oils to juvenile crawfish and determine if toxicity was due to poisoning or interference with oxygen transfer across the gills. Juvenile crawfish (Procambarus clarkii) were tested for acute …

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report
In today’s society, transportation has become a vital component of our economy, our national defense, our emergency response systems, and our day-to-day life. Disruption of major highway systems can have serious social, health, economic, security, and environmental consequences. Disruption of highway systems can result from natural or man-made causes, and it may be intentional or unintentional. Examples of the wide-ranging causes of highway disruption include weather, natural disasters, vehicle crashes, hazardous material spills, barge impacts with bridge piers, and acts of terrorism. Disruption of key transportation chokepoints, such as bridges or tunnels, could have disastrous impacts on Kentucky. With this …
A Review Of Studies In Swarm Robotics, Levent Bayindir, Erol Şahi̇n
A Review Of Studies In Swarm Robotics, Levent Bayindir, Erol Şahi̇n
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Swarm robotics is a new approach to the coordination of large numbers of relatively simple robots. The approach takes its inspiration from the system-level functioning of social insects which demonstrate three desired characteristics for multi-robot systems: robustness, flexibility and scalability. In this paper we have presented a preliminary taxonomy for swarm robotics and classified existing studies into this taxonomy after investigating the existing surveys related to swarm robotics literature. Our parent taxonomic units are modeling, behavior design, communication, analytical studies and problems. We are classifying existing studies into these main axes. Since existing reviews do not have enough number of …
Using Angle Of Arrival (Bearing) Information For Localization In Robot Networks, Tolga Eren
Using Angle Of Arrival (Bearing) Information For Localization In Robot Networks, Tolga Eren
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
In this paper, we consider using angle of arrival information (bearing) for localization in robot networks. The essential property we require in this paper is that a node can infer heading information from its neighbors. We address the uniqueness of network localization solutions by the theory of globally rigid graphs. We show that while the parallel rigidity problem for formations with bearings is isomorphic to the distance case, the global rigidity of the formation is simpler (in fact identical to the simpler rigidity case) for a network with bearings, compared to formations with distances. We provide the conditions of localization …

A Vrp-Based Route Planning For A Mobile Robot Group, Osman Parlaktuna, Aydin Si̇pahi̇oğlu, Ahmet Yazici
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
In this study, a vehicle routing problem-based approach is presented to construct non-intersecting routes for the members of a mobile robot team. It is assumed that each robot starts from a central location such as the charging point, completes its route and returns to the starting location. The proposed method consists of three algorithms: a sweep algorithm determines the position of each node in clockwise (or counter clockwise) manner with respect to the starting location; savings algorithm calculates the saving obtained by adding a node to the route of a robot; Dijkstra's shortest path algorithm is used to calculate the …

Design And Implementation Of An Ad-Hoc Routing Protocol For Mobile Robots, Carlos Agüero, Jose M. Canas, Miguel OrtuNo, Vicente Matellan
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Mobile robots need to be able to communicate among themselves, as well as with hosts participating in the task that they are all involved in. Wired networks are obviously not suitable for mobile robots. Current wireless networks based on a fixed infrastructure (GSM, WiFi, etc.) to route packets may not be suitable because this infrastructure does not cover every place and the requirements of its resources. The best choice for mobile robots are Ad-Hoc networks, which are wireless and do not need a fixed infrastructure. This article describes PERA, a complete communications library including link, net, and transport layers for …

Umts-Hsdpa In High Altitude Platforms (Haps) Communications, Bazil Taha Ahmed, Miguel Calvo Ramon, Leandro De Haro-Ariet
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
In this paper, the performance of HAPs (High Altitudes Platforms) UMTS HSDPA (High Speed Downlink Packet Access) is studied for different HAPs height h, different cells radius R and two directions (0° and 30°) within the cell. The network under study is assumed to have 61 ground cells. It is noticed that, for urban zone users, the effective range is lower than the effective range for users in rural zones for a given modulation scheme. Also it is noticed that in rural zone, the HSDPA can support higher modulation schemes. It is noticed that, when 80% of the base station …
Study Of The Warranty Cost Model For Software Reliability With An Imperfect Debugging Phenomenon, D.R. Prince Williams
Study Of The Warranty Cost Model For Software Reliability With An Imperfect Debugging Phenomenon, D.R. Prince Williams
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Software reliability is one of the most important characteristics of software quality. Its measurement and management technologies employed during the software life-cycle are essential for producing and maintaining quality/reliable software systems. Herein, we discuss a modified approach to calculating the delivery cost of a software product, when warranty is to be provided, with an imperfect debugging phenomenon. Unlike existing cost models, here the strategy was to consider maintenance support given to the customer with an imperfect debugging phenomenon. The optimal release time can be calculated for various reliability levels by minimizing the cost. The delivery cost, reliability of the software …

Byzantine Fault Tolerant Coordination For Web Services Atomic Transactions, Wenbing Zhao
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications
In this paper, we present the mechanisms needed for Byzantine fault tolerant coordination of Web services atomic transactions. The mechanisms have been incorporated into an open-source framework implementing the standard Web services atomic transactions specification. The core services of the framework, namely, the activation service, the registration service, the completion service, and the distributed commit service, are replicated and protected with our Byzantine fault tolerance mechanisms. Such a framework can be useful for many transactional Web services that require high degree of security and dependability.
The Embodied Transport Energy Analysis Of Imported Wood Pellets, Aidan Duffy, Michael Conroy
The Embodied Transport Energy Analysis Of Imported Wood Pellets, Aidan Duffy, Michael Conroy
Conference Papers
The Irish Government has recently introduced a series of capital grants to boost the uptake of domestic wood-pellet technologies in order to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. These have proved popular and have encouraged a significant number of people to switch from gas- and oil-fired boilers to the cleaner fuel. The demand for wood-pellets has, however, greatly exceeded the national capacity for production. The market for wood pellets elsewhere in Europe is also tight and, consequently, a large proportion of Irish pellets are sourced in Canada. This presents possible problems: the carbon emissions associated with long-distance transport may significantly offset the …

Educating Engineers For The 21st. Century: And Why Some Elements Of History And Philosophy Should Be Incorporated Into The Curriculum, William Grimson, Mike Murphy, Eugene Coyle

It has been said that in some respects the Russian composer Igor Stravinsky was a magpie – borrowing styles and ideas from diverse sources for whatever musical project he was working on. The practice of engineering has this same characteristic in that it willingly takes ideas, knowledge and techniques from wherever in pursuit of completing its goal. Further, Engineering is, at least in part, in agreement with Fyodor Dostoevsky – ‘if everything on Earth were rational, nothing would happen’. Against such a background it is proposed that a framework based on both philosophy and the history of engineering, science and …

A novel Bezier spline-based geometry for printed monopole antennas is presented. Quadratic curves are used to describe the outline of the radiating element. The geometry is optimised by a genetic algorithm. A small number of control points are used to define the geometry, ensuring a small search space for the GA. The resulting antenna has an impedance bandwidth from 1.44 to 14.7 GHz
Wideband Reconfigurable Rolled Planar Monopole Antenna, Giuseppe Ruvio, Max Ammann, Zhi Ning Chen
Wideband Reconfigurable Rolled Planar Monopole Antenna, Giuseppe Ruvio, Max Ammann, Zhi Ning Chen
Articles
A novel technique to reconfigure the frequency range of a planar monopole antenna is presented. By adjusting the degree of spiral tightness, a shift of the well-matched operating frequency range is achieved. The proposed antenna is capable of covering the frequencies in the range from 2.9 to 15 GHz, depending on the degree of spiral tightness. The antenna yields a high-efficiency across the full operating bandwidth. Radiation patterns show good omni-directional features in all primary cuts and remain relatively stable with the change of antenna configuration, so that it is a remarkable candidate for indoor or mobile applications where a …
Polarisation Dependence Of Bend Loss For A Standard Singlemode Fiber, Qian Wang, Ginu Rajan, Pengfei Wang, Gerald Farrell
Polarisation Dependence Of Bend Loss For A Standard Singlemode Fiber, Qian Wang, Ginu Rajan, Pengfei Wang, Gerald Farrell
Articles
Polarization dependence of bend loss caused by the polymer coating layer for a standard singlemode fiber (SMF28) is investigated theoretically and experimentally. Bend loss for SMF28 for both the TE and TM mode is calculated separately. Normalized polarization dependent loss is proposed for the characterization of the polarization sensitivity of bend loss for different bend radii. Corresponding experimental tests are presented, which agree with the theoretical results. Both the theoretical and experimental results show that the polymer coating layer has a significant influence on the polarization dependence of bend loss.

Quantum Dot Energy Relaxation Mediated By Plasmon Emission In Doped Covalent Semiconductor Heterostructures, A. V. Fedorov, Anna Baranov, I. D. Rukhlenko, T. S. Perova, Kevin Berwick
Articles
The interaction between interface plasmons within a doped substrate and quantum dot electrons or holes has been theoretically studied in double heterostructures based on covalent semiconductors. The interface plasmon modes, the corresponding dispersion relationship, and the intraband carrier relaxation rate in quantum dots are reported. We find the critical points in the interface plasmon density of states for multilayered structures results in enhanced quantum dot intraband carrier relaxation when compared to that for a single heterostructure. A detailed discussion is made of the relaxation rate and the spectral position dependencies on the quantum dot layer thickness as well as on …
Design Of Compact Multi-Band Ebg Structures, Xiulong Bao, Max Ammann
Design Of Compact Multi-Band Ebg Structures, Xiulong Bao, Max Ammann
Conference papers
Several novel compact multiple-band high-impedance surface EBG structures are presented. By utilizing four S-shape corrugated arms or spiral arms connected to the edge of a small square patch to increase the inductance, the resonant frequency of the EBG structure can be significantly reduced. In order to broaden the width of the stopband and adjust the ratio of the centre frequencies for multi-band EBG a log periodic distance between the S-shape strips is implemented. The effects of the parameters of the EBG structure on the width of stopbands are discussed in detail. The results show that the proposed novel EBG structure …

Electromagnetic Coupling Mechanism In A Layered Human Tissue Model As Reference For 434 Mhz Medical Therapy Applicators, Sergio Curto, Max Ammann
Conference papers
In order to minimize exposure to human tissue, electromagnetic interaction with antennas has benefited from a lot of research since hand-held communication transceivers became widely used consumer products. On the other hand, medical applications have been exploiting the ISM (industrial scientific and medical standard) 434 MHz frequency band for therapeutic applications such as hyperthermia. Various antennas have been used in hyperthermia applicators but advanced designs depend on improved knowledge of the radiated antenna modes and interacting influence of human tissue. As a preliminary step towards analyzing antennas interacting with tissues in the near- and far-fields, this study reports on the …
Dual Frequency Dual Circularly-Polarised Patch Antenna With Wide Beamwidth, Xiulong Bao, Max Ammann
Dual Frequency Dual Circularly-Polarised Patch Antenna With Wide Beamwidth, Xiulong Bao, Max Ammann
Conference papers
A novel probe-fed single-layer annular-ring patch antenna for dual-frequency circular polarization is evaluated numerically and experimentally verified. The proposed antenna consists of a small circular patch surrounded by two concentric annular-rings, which is loaded by an unequal lateral cross-slot ground plane. The circularly-polarized frequency ratio of the two resonant modes is tunable to a small value, suitable for wireless communications systems. The patch size of the proposed antenna is reduced by about 53% compared to the conventional circular patch at a given frequency. The radiation characteristics of the novel antenna are also presented.
