Cost Comparison Of Straddle Carrier Direct And Relay Systems In Container Terminals, Wen-Chih Huang, Chin-Yuan Chu

Journal of Marine Science and Technology

The main characteristics of straddle carrier direct system and straddle carrier relay system are stated and factors affecting the economics of this two handling systems are also studied. A cost function model is proposed to make the comparison. It includes land cost, equipment cost, transportation cost between quayside and storage yard, annual throughput, handling efficiency, labor cost and their constituent factors. A "handling cost comparison indicator" (RD) is also submitted to determine the preferred system. For RD > 1 scenario, straddle carrier direct system is preferred, and on the contrary, straddle carrier relay system is preferred, if RD < 1.

A Novel Approach To Determine The Astronomical Vessel Position, Chih-Li Chen, Tien-Pen Hsu, Jiang-Ren Chang Dec 2003

A Novel Approach To Determine The Astronomical Vessel Position, Chih-Li Chen, Tien-Pen Hsu, Jiang-Ren Chang

Journal of Marine Science and Technology

In this paper, a novel approach based on the trigonometric equation solving technique is developed to solve the classical problem of celestial navigation. It is shown that this approach, namely, the simultaneous equal-altitude equations method (SEEM), can directly calculate the astronomical vessel position (AVP) without an additional graphical procedure. It is also found that the SEEM is not only simpler than the matrix method but is also more straightforward as compared with the spherical triangle method. In addition, aimed at the drawbacks of the intercept method, an improved approach with the new computation procedure is presented to plot the celestial …

C-Ring Strength Of Advanced Monolithic Ceramics, A. A. Wereszczak, R. J. Caspe, J. J. Swab, S. F. Duffy, E. H. Baker

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications

Alumina, silicon carbide, silicon nitride, and zirconia are common candidate ceramics for load-bearing tubular components. To help facilitate design and reliability modeling with each ceramic, Weibull strength distributions were determined with each material using a diametrally compressed c-ring specimen in accordance with ASTM C1323. The investigated silicon nitride and zirconia were found to exhibit higher uncensored characteristic strengths than the alumina and silicon carbide. The occurrence of chamfer-located fracture initiation was problematic, and hindered the ability to generate valid design data in some of these ceramics. Fractography and stress modeling results suggest that some aspects of ASTM C1323 should be …

An Economic Analysis Of Variable Rate Technology, Isti Surjandari, Marvin T. Batte, Mario J. Miranda

Makara Journal of Technology

Variable Rate Technology (VRT) offers an opportunity to improve production efficiency by allowing input applications to fluctuate in response to spatial variations in soil characteristics and nutrient levels. Society may also benefit from reduced negative externalities, such as surface and groundwater contamination, from input applications. Using a dynamic spatial model, this study examines how the interaction among variability, spatial autocorrelation, and mean level of soil fertility affects optimal sampling density and the economic gains from VRT. VRT was found to be profitable under selected conditions, and the optimal grid size will vary with these conditions. In the case where variability …

Alum And Pacl Coagulation, Winarni Winarni

Makara Journal of Technology

Alum and PACl Coagulation. Coagulation occurs by interaction of aluminum hydrolysis products with the contaminant such as colloidal particles. It is necessary to consider the different aluminum species that may present during specific conditions, since the mechanism of turbidity removal is dependent upon them. PACl consists of preformed aluminum hydrolysis products, which are stable below pH 6 and less sensitive than in situ hydrolysis product, alum. The benefits of PACl relative to alum have been investigated as a function of pH and Al dosages. Specific conditions and aluminum species that exist during the certain mechanisms of coagulation are discussed. Results …

The Selection Of Materials For Roller Chains From The Perspective Of Manufacturing Process, Rahmat Saptono Dec 2003

The Selection Of Materials For Roller Chains From The Perspective Of Manufacturing Process, Rahmat Saptono

Makara Journal of Technology

The selection of materials for an engineering component is not only requested by its design function and shape, but also the sequence through which it is manufactured. The manufacturing operation of roller chains involves drawing and trimming processes aimed at producing semi-finished chain drives component with a well-standardized dimension. In addition to final combination of properties required by design constraints, the ability of materials to be formed into a desired shape and geometry without failure is also critical. The objective of materials selection should therefore involve additional attributes that are not typically accommodated by the standard procedure of materials selection. …

Transportation Shortest Path Search Area Model, Hui Wang Dec 2003

Transportation Shortest Path Search Area Model, Hui Wang

Doctoral Dissertations

Although many studies on shortest-path algorithms have been conducted in the past, few of them have considered the time and effort required to obtain and update the weight property of the network arcs. For transportation-related problems – due to the size and complexity of the network – preparing, updating, and transmitting the network database on which the shortest-path algorithms perform can be a challenge.

This study designed a Transportation Shortest Path Search Area (TSPSA) model to enhance the database preparation and updating step before any shortest-path search algorithm can start processing. Taking advantage of the characteristics of the transportation networks, …

Comparison Of Microbial Cell Densities And Treatment Performance In Nitrifying Activated Sludge Reactors, Janalyn Rae Brown Dec 2003

Comparison Of Microbial Cell Densities And Treatment Performance In Nitrifying Activated Sludge Reactors, Janalyn Rae Brown

Masters Theses

A thorough understanding of microbial dynamics in activated sludge treatment is currently unrealized due, in part, to quantitative techniques that rely on culture-dependent methods. The bias inherent with cultivation techniques may result in isolates that do not necessarily represent those dominant in the system evaluated. In situ analysis of microorganisms functioning in wastewater reactors will provide a greater understanding of how particular groups of organisms, such as nitrifiers, are impacted by system fluctuations. This information is vital for improved process design and control. The overall goal of this research was to investigate the use of the real-time polymerase chain reaction …

Innovative Contracting Prequalification/Selecion Model Using Analytical Hierarchy Process (Ahp), Saad J. Zidan Dec 2003

Innovative Contracting Prequalification/Selecion Model Using Analytical Hierarchy Process (Ahp), Saad J. Zidan

Masters Theses

Design-Build, Cost-Plus-Time, and warranty are the three innovative contracting methods that the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) decided to fund. FHWA allowed the usage of these methods in federally funded projects if this will result in reducing time, improving quality, and saving tax payers' money. Prequalification is recognized as the best way of assuring that contractors do have the required qualifications to deliver projects successfully. Prequalification is even more critical when low-bid selection method is used with any of the innovative contracting, since incompetent contractors may get awarded for low-bids that are not based on valid assumptions.

This study presents a …

Trust, Collaboration, And Financial Return In Conservation/Development Partnerships, New England Environmental Finance Center Dec 2003

Trust, Collaboration, And Financial Return In Conservation/Development Partnerships, New England Environmental Finance Center

Economics and Finance

In early 2002 the New England Environmental Finance Center hosted a series of roundtable discussions among municipal officials, residential developers, land trust representatives, and others about "Innovative Approaches to Land Conservation and Smart Growth". Among our observations was that for many of the over 20 conservation/development partnerships we discussed in the series, creation and maintenance of trust was central to success or failure of various stages of the partnership. This suggested a link between creation of trust and financial return for traditionally opposed project partners.

To further examine this matter, we interviewed 11 round table participants and asked questions about …
