High-Efficiency Polymer-Based Electrophosphorescent Devices, Xiong Gong Sep 2002

High-Efficiency Polymer-Based Electrophosphorescent Devices, Xiong Gong

Xiong Gong

High efficiency electrophosphorescence has been achieved by using [Ir(DPF)3]-doped polyvinylcarbazole/biphenyl-1,3,4-oxadiazole co-polymers (see Figure). Light-emitting devices with luminous efficiencies up to 36 cd/A can be realized with polymeric host/heavy metal complex guest systems, fabricated by processing the luminescent layer from solution.

Isoform-Specific Stimulation Of Cardiac Na/K Pumps By Nanomolar Concentrations Of Glycosides., Glenn Gaudette, Junyuan Gao, Randy Wymore, Yongli Wang, Irvin Krukenkamp, Ira Cohen, Richard Mathias Mar 2002

Isoform-Specific Stimulation Of Cardiac Na/K Pumps By Nanomolar Concentrations Of Glycosides., Glenn Gaudette, Junyuan Gao, Randy Wymore, Yongli Wang, Irvin Krukenkamp, Ira Cohen, Richard Mathias

Glenn R. Gaudette

It is well-known that micromolar to millimolar concentrations of cardiac glycosides inhibit Na/K pump activity, however, some early reports suggested nanomolar concentrations of these glycosides stimulate activity. These early reports were based on indirect measurements in multicellular preparations, hence, there was some uncertainty whether ion accumulation/depletion rather than pump stimulation caused the observations. Here, we utilize the whole-cell patch-clamp technique on isolated cardiac myocytes to directly measure Na/K pump current (I(P)) in conditions that minimize the possibility of ion accumulation/depletion causing the observed effects. In guinea pig ventricular myocytes, nanomolar concentrations of dihydro-ouabain (DHO) caused an outward current that appeared …

Interoperability Standards In The Semantic Web, Steven Ray Feb 2002

Interoperability Standards In The Semantic Web, Steven Ray

Steven R Ray

The growth in the use of the Internet brings with it an increase in the number of interconnections among information systems supporting the manufacturing supply chain as well as other businesses. Each of these interconnections must be carefully prescribed to ensure interoperability. However, the sheer number of interconnections and the resulting complexity threaten to overwhelm the ability of the standards community or industry to provide the necessary specifications—a way out of this impasse must be found. This paper outlines the elements of an approach and the technology to move toward self-integrating systems, wherein the systems negotiate meaningful interfaces as needed …
