This study was undertaken to determine the optimum pH, temperature and glycerol feed rate for the production of recombinant hookworm (Ancylostoma caninum) anticoagulant peptide (rAcAP-5) by Pichia pastoris using response surface methodology (RSM). A central composite design was used as an experimental design for allocation of treatment combinations in three blocks. The variables selected for study were pH, temperature and glycerol feed rate. pH was the most important variable affecting yield, specific yield and specific activity of rAcAP-5. Glycerol feed rate had a significant effect on the specific activity of rAcAP-5 (% of total secreted protein) while temperature did not …

A Continuous Process For The Conversion Of Vegetable Oils Into Methyl Esters Of Fatty Acids, Hossein Noureddini, D Harkey, V Medikonduru

A continuous process for the transesterification of triglycerides to methyl esters was investigated in a pilot plant. The process was equipped with a motionless and a high-shear mixer. The experimental studies explored variations in the mixing intensity, stoichiometry, and catalyst concentration on the overall conversion. The combined as well as individual effect of mixers was examined. The developed process resulted in high conversions of vegetable oils into methyl esters. Conversion of triglycerides to methyl esters in excess of 98% was achieved. Larger excess amounts of alcohol favored higher conversions. The motionless and high-shear mixers each provided adequate mixing for the …

Asymptotic Decay Of Radius Of A Weakly Conductive Viscous Jet, A.F. Spivak, Yuris A. Dzenis

Motion of a weakly conductive viscous jet accelerated by an external electric field is considered. Nonlinear rheological constitutive equation applicable for polymer fluids (Oswald–deWaele law) is applied. A differential equation for the variation of jet radius with axial coordinate is derived. Asymptotic variation of the jet radius at large distances from the jet origin is analyzed. It is found that the well-known power-law asymptote for Newtonian fluids with the exponent 1/4 holds for more general class of fluids, i.e., pseudoplastic (shear thinning) and dilatant (shear thickening) fluids with the flow index between 0 and 2. Processing of hydroxylapatite Sol-gel films on titanium alloy bone prostheses. A method utilizing non-line-of-Sight ion beam implantation and/or rapid thermal processing to provide improved bonding of layers of hydroxylapatite to titanium alloy Substrates while encouraging bone ingrowth into the hydroxylapatite layers located away from the substrate, is described for the fabrication of prostheses. The first layer of hydroxylapatite is mixed into the Substrate by the ions or rapidly thermally annealed, while Subsequent layers are heat treated or densified using ion implantation to form layers of decreasing density and larger crystallization, with the outermost layers being Suitable for bone ingrowth.

Enzymatic glycerolysis of soybean oil was studied. Of the nine lipases that were tested in the initial screening, Pseudomonas sp. resulted in the highest yield of monoglycerides. Lipase from Pseudomonas sp. was further studied for the influence of temperature, thermal stability, enzyme/oil ratio, and glycerol/oil ratio. A full factorial optimization approach was performed. The following conditions were tested over the specified ranges: temperature (30?70°C), thermal stability (30?70°C), enzyme/oil ratio (0.05?0.2 g enzyme/10 g oil), glycerol/oil ratio (1:1?3:1 glycerol/oil molar ratio) and 1 h reaction time. Entropy Generation In A Rectangular Packed Duct With Wall Heat Flux, Yaşar Demirel, R. Kahraman

The entropy generation due to heat transfer and friction has been calculated for fully developed, forced convection flow in a large rectangular duct, packed with spherical particles, with constant heat fluxes applied to both the top (heated) and bottom (cooled) wall. An approximate analytical expression for the velocity profile developed for packed bed with H/dp > 5 has been used together with the energy equation of fully developed flow to calculate the non isothermal temperature profiles along the flow passage. The earth’s climate is predicted to change because human activities are altering the chemical composition of the atmosphere through the buildup of greenhouse gases — primarily carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, and chlorofluorocarbons. The heat-trapping property of these greenhouse gases is undisputed. Although there is uncertainty about exactly how and when the earth’s climate will respond to enhanced concentrations of greenhouse gases, observations indicate that detectable changes are under way. There most likely will be increases in temperature and changes in precipitation, soil moisture, and sea level, which could have adverse effects on many ecological systems, as well as on …

This report summarizes the findings of an evaluation of sprinkler irrigation as a volatile organic compound (VOC) separation and disposal method.
Background A need for lower cost, effective treatment alternatives for the disposal of treated contaminated groundwater provided the impetus to conduct a SITE demonstration of sprinkler irrigation since it provides both separation and disposal options. Since the application of irrigation is fairly widespread throughout the United States, there may be an opportunity to employ this as a dual purpose technology; concurrent irrigation and disposal of treated groundwater. In situ infrared (IR) spectroscopy and visible-light (VIS) spectroscopic ellipsometry over the spectral range from 700 to 2000 cm-1 and 1.5–3.5 eV, respectively, were used to investigate the optical behavior of boron nitride (BN) thin films at temperatures from room temperature (RT) to 600 °C. The polycrystalline hexagonal (h) and mixed-phase h- and cubic (c)-BN thin films were deposited by magnetron sputtering on [001] silicon. We observe a reversible moisture incorporation process in as-grown h-BN samples. When stored in normal ambient, the h-BN thin films absorb water into thin-film micropores. Manure or compost from beef cattle feedlots can be excellent sources of nutrients and organic matter when added to soils. This study was conducted to determine the effect of a single application of manure and compost on runoff and erosion under no-till and tillage conditions. Tillage consisted of a single disking operation up and down the slope on a Sharpsburg soil which was cropped to grain sorghum or wheat the previous season. Manure and compost were applied at rates required to meet corn fertility requirements. Additional experimental treatments included the application of inorganic fertilizer and an untreated check. An optical encoding and decoding system which performs code-division multiple access (CDMA) communication in the incoherent, or direct detection, optical domain using bipolar +1/-1 codes. The present invention uses code modu lation and detection principles that permit all-optical imple mentation of the bipolar. +1/-1. code and correlation detec tion that have been developed for the radio frequency (RF) systems. This is possible in spite of the non-negative, or unipolar, +1/0, nature of the incoherent optical system that only detects and processes the signal intensity. Spectroscopic ellipsometry and magneto-optic Kerr effects are measured on Pt/Co multilayers with a series of Co layer thicknesses from 0.08 to 1 nm. An electromagnetic theory of multilayered structures allows regression analysis fits between acquired data and parameter dependent model analysis. Recently, we determined the single layer Co magneto-optic Voigt parameter and found that it depends on Co layer thickness. In the present work, we report an in-depth study of interfacial magneto-optic effects for a large number of Pt/Co multilayer samples. Assessment of environmental condition is critical to wise management and policy decisions. However, for some concerns such as sustainability, it is difficult to assess environmental condition because it involves disparate social objectives and an understanding of complex ecological systems. Here, a general framework is proposed to examine sustainability of environmental resources in objective, measurable ways. By using soil quality as an example, sustainability research is taken beyond theory and into application.
Sustainability depends on the quality of resource endowment. Endowment of a natural resource can be modeled as an index of quality to assess the degree of sustainable management. This …

The microstructures of melt spun Sm11Fe89 and (Sm11Fe89)94Ti3C3 have been investigated under different solidification conditions. The magnetic properties of the nitrided materials have been related to the observed microstructures. Melt spinning of the Sm11Fe89 alloys resulted in grain sizes at or above the single domain limit. The addition of Ti and C resulted in an order of magnitude refinement in the microstructural scale. The magnetic properties of the samples with grain sizes below the single domain limit decreased with decreasing grain size due to increased intergranular exchange coupling.
