Minimization Of Sum-Of-Conditional-Decoders Structures With Applications In Finite Machine Epld Design And Machine Learning, Sanof Mohamedsadakathulla Dec 1995

Minimization Of Sum-Of-Conditional-Decoders Structures With Applications In Finite Machine Epld Design And Machine Learning, Sanof Mohamedsadakathulla

Dissertations and Theses

In order to achieve superior speed in sequencer designs over competing PLD devices, Cypress brought to market an innovative architecture, CY7C361. This architecture introduced a new kind of universal logic gate, the CONDITION DECODER (CDEC). Because there are only 32 macrocells in the chip, saving only one CDEC gate can be quite important (the well-known "fit/no-fit problem"). A problem that is related to the fitting problem of the Cypress CY7C361 chip is the SOC Minimization. Due to the limited low number of macrocells in CY7C361, a high quality logic minimization to reduce the number of macrocells is very important. The …

An Examination Of Railroad Capacity And Its Implications For Rail-Highway Intermodal Transportation, David Bruce Clarke Dec 1995

An Examination Of Railroad Capacity And Its Implications For Rail-Highway Intermodal Transportation, David Bruce Clarke

Doctoral Dissertations

After many years of decline in market share, railroads are now experiencing an increasing demand for their services. Service intensive intermodal transportation seems to be an especially promising market area. Since the historic decline in traffic has been accompanied by a reduction in network infrastructure, however, the railroads' ability to handle sizable traffic increases, at least in the short term, is in question. Since rail transportation is critical to the domestic economy of the nation, and is increasingly important in international logistics channels, shortfalls in railroad capacity are not desirable.

The published literature on railroad capacity is relatively sparse, especially …

Activation Of Precipitated Iron Fischer-Tropsch Catalysts, Mehul D. Shroff

Chemical and Biological Engineering ETDs

The Fischer-Tropsch Synthesis (FTS) is an important step in the manufacture of synthetic fuels from coal. The use of iron catalysts for FTS, though desirable from the standpoint of process economy, is hampered by problems relating to catalyst attrition and carbon buildup. In addition, from a research perspective, there has been a long-standing controversy in the literature with regard to the nature of the active phase.

The effect of activation and reaction treatments on the resulting phase transformations in a commercial, precipitated and spray-dried, Fe2O3 - CuO - K2O Fischer-Tropsch catalyst have been studied. Different …

Personality As It Relates To Performance Among Primary Flight Students At Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, Caroline F. Farmer

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the relationship of primary flight students' performance as it relates to personality. Previous research has provided the basis for the relationship between what an individual accomplishes and personality traits. The individual performance of 30 students were evaluated by two different techniques during an observer flight. One was an evaluation form developed by the researcher and the other, the flight instructor's (P.I.C.) evaluation. The performance data gathered by the researcher was collected in order to provide a secondary set of performance data in case there was no discriminability amongst the flight instructor's evaluation. …

Compressible Flow Analysis Of Thrust Augmenting Ejectors, Mohamed Moujahid Dec 1995

Compressible Flow Analysis Of Thrust Augmenting Ejectors, Mohamed Moujahid

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

The present work was initiated due to the need for a method to understand and predict the thrust augmenting characteristics of jet ejectors. The mixing process in ejectors can be analyzed using either the control volume approach, or detailed models based on the Navier -Stokes Equations and the theory of turbulent jets. The control volume approach uses integrated forms of the conservation equations of mass, momentum and energy. It is chosen in the first part of the study since it affords the best vehicle for the parametric studies required to understand the potential of ejectors for a given application. Compressibility …

A Study On The Causes Of Variations In Transmissivity And Storativity During Pump Tests At Asylum Lake, Paul Joseph Pare

Masters Theses

Over a two year period, Western Michigan University ran a number of pump tests in the Asylum Lake Area in Kalamazoo, Michigan. The transmissivities and storativities calculated from these tests differed significantly from well to well in any particular test, and from pump test to pump test. Utilizing the computer programs AQTESOLV 3.0 and Aquifer Parameter Estimator, a number of T and S values were calculated. After analysis of the results, the following conclusion was drawn. The main reason for the deviations in the T and S values arose from the mixing of the results of numerous methods (some of …

Investigation Of Residual Strength And Fatigue Life Of Unstiffened Aluminum Panels With Multiple Site Damage, Mark C. Cherry Dec 1995

Investigation Of Residual Strength And Fatigue Life Of Unstiffened Aluminum Panels With Multiple Site Damage, Mark C. Cherry

Theses and Dissertations

Multiple Site Damage MSD is the occurrence of small fatigue cracks at several sites within aircraft structures. This is important since it may lower the residual strength and fatigue life of the structure beyond what can be predicted using the damage tolerance technique based on a single crack, currently in use to design aircraft structures. This study investigated the effects of MSD on unstiffined panels. MSD usually occurs at rivet holes, or other stress concentration locations within an aircraft structure. This study simulated rivet holes with MSD, by using holes of constant diameter with small cracks, evenly spaced across the …

Experimental Investigation Of A Supersonic Turbulent Boundary Layer With Adverse Pressure Gradient, Chad S. Hale

Theses and Dissertations

Laser Doppler Velocimetry (LDV) measurements were made to quantify the effect of adverse pressure gradient on the compressible turbulent flow structure in a Mach 2.9 boundary layer (Re/m= 1.75 x 107). Measurements included profiles of 2-D mean velocities, turbulence intensities, Reynolds shear stresses, intermittency, flatness and skewness. In addition, mean strain rates were also measured. The boundary layer measurements were acquired for both flat plate and compression ramp models. LDV measurements were made at two locations on the compression ramp model at 68 cm and 71 cm downstream of the nozzle throat. At these locations, Β …

Prediction Of An Axial Compressor Stage Characteristic From A One-Point Measurement, Shahnaz M. Punjani Dec 1995

Prediction Of An Axial Compressor Stage Characteristic From A One-Point Measurement, Shahnaz M. Punjani

Theses and Dissertations

This study focuses on predicting axial compressor stage characteristics using a single performance point comprised of mass flow, temperature and pressure rise coefficients obtained in experimental testing and a generic stage temperature characteristic. A new temperature characteristic is generated using a mapping technique where changes in stage blade angles are iterated from assumptions of free vortex flow and constant increment of flow turning angle with increased flow incidence. If additional data corresponding to the new curve are available, the characteristic is adjusted using non-linear least squares estimation, Essentially, the modified mapped curve results from a re-estimated change in the stator …

The Automated Wingman: An Airborne Companion For Users Of Dis Compatible Flight Simulators, Mark M. Edwards Dec 1995

The Automated Wingman: An Airborne Companion For Users Of Dis Compatible Flight Simulators, Mark M. Edwards

Theses and Dissertations

A major problem encountered by users of distributed virtual environments is the lack of simulators available to populate these environments. This problem is usually remedied by using computer generated entities. Unfortunately, these entities often lack adequate human behavior and are readily identified as non-human. This violates the realism premise of distributed virtual reality and is a major problem, especially in training situations. This thesis addresses the problem by presenting a computer generated entity called the Automated Wingman. The Automated Wingman is a semi-automated computer generated aircraft simulator that operates under the control of a designated lead simulator and integrates distributed …

Validation Testing A Contaminant Transport And Natural Attenuation Simulation Model Using Field Data, Steven J. Flier Dec 1995

Validation Testing A Contaminant Transport And Natural Attenuation Simulation Model Using Field Data, Steven J. Flier

Theses and Dissertations

This research extends the work begun by Enyeart (1994) which evaluated the process of intrinsic bioremediation, and which developed a model for predicting the velocity of an aerobic degradation front, as it traverses the length of a JP-4 contaminant plume. It is assumed this aerobic front will traverse the contaminant plume as dissolved oxygen is carried by the ground water through the sorption-retarded contaminant. The ultimate purpose of Enyeart's model is to use it to develop field guidance for assessing the feasibility of intrinsic bioremediation to restore petroleum-contaminated soils. After simulating intrinsic bioremediation many times with a spreadsheet model, results …

Dynamic Pulse Buckling Of Columns With Viscous Damping, Murli Kadandale Dec 1995

Dynamic Pulse Buckling Of Columns With Viscous Damping, Murli Kadandale

Masters Theses

This is a study of dynamic pulse buckling of columns with viscous damping. The differential equations of motion were obtained using the Bemoulli-Navier hypothesis. The effects of axial and rotary inertia were included in the analysis. The Voigt-Kelvin model for a viscoelastic material is used. The Finite Difference Method was employed to solve the differential equations of motion. First columns without geometrical imperfections were studied, and a correlation between the damping modulus and the more familiar damping ratio was obtained. Then beams with initial geometrical imperfection were studied. A suitable dynamic buckling criterion was defined. It was observed that viscous …

Multiple Model Adaptive Control Of The Vista F-16, Michael J. Stepaniak Dec 1995

Multiple Model Adaptive Control Of The Vista F-16, Michael J. Stepaniak

Theses and Dissertations

Multiple model adaptive control (MMAC) is investigated using the high-fidelity, nonlinear, six-degree-of-freedom Simulation Rapid-Prototyping Facility VISTA F-16. Detection of single actuator and sensor failures is considered, with an MMAC algorithm initially pursued which allows a controller specifically designed for each particular failure condition to replace the standard F-16 Block 40 flight control system (FCS) once the failure is detected. The synthesis of certain discrete-time LQG/PI controllers (those using control variables linearly dependent on state derivatives) is shown to be unattainable due to numerical difficulties. A novel control technique, termed control redistribution, is introduced which redistributes control commands (that would normally …

The Effect Of Rotor Wake/Exit Guide Vane Interaction On The Total Pressure Losses In An Airfoil Cascade, Aaron Mosebach

Masters Theses

Computational simulations have been performed to study the effects of unsteady rotor wakes on the total pressure losses and the boundary layer characteristics in a compressor cascade. In the numerical simulations, transitional and turbulent flow conditions were modeled at design and off-design inlet flow angles, and for varying rotor wake widths and wake velocity deficits.

First, simulations were performed in the absence of rotor wakes at the inlet of the EGV (Exit Guide Vane) cascade. Second, simulations were performed for different wake width and wake velocity deficit values at the inlet of the EGV cascade. The majority of the numerical …

More and more aircraft, both commercial and military, are being called upon to fly well beyond their economic and structural service lives. Budget cuts and dwindling new aircraft development has forced the United States Air Force (USAF) to look toward more reliable structural repairs. One of these repair techniques, which was the subject of this study, is the repair of metallic aircraft structures using high strength composite materials. This study investigated the fatigue response of a precracked, 508x1 52x1 mm, 2024-T3 aluminum panel repaired with a partially bonded, unidirectional, three-ply boron/epoxy composite reinforcement with ply lengths of 68, 56 and …

Adaptive And Fixed Wavelet Features For Narrowband Signal Classification, Anthony J. Pohl Dec 1995

Adaptive And Fixed Wavelet Features For Narrowband Signal Classification, Anthony J. Pohl

Theses and Dissertations

The application of the multiresolution analysis developed by Mallat to signal classification by Pati and Krishnaprasad and Szu, et al, is further explored in this thesis. Several different wavelet based feature extraction and classification systems are developed and implemented. Methods which rely on the traditional dyadic wavelet decomposition and on the adaptive wavelet representation are presented. Each of the classification systems is implemented for a labeled data set of narrowband signals. Finally, classification results on the full data set and on low frequency Fourier coefficients are provided as baseline comparisons for our work.

Comparison Of The Ralph Smith And The Time Domain Flying Qualities Criteria, Lori A. Carlucci Dec 1995

Comparison Of The Ralph Smith And The Time Domain Flying Qualities Criteria, Lori A. Carlucci

Theses and Dissertations

Aircraft pitch response is a crucial element of piloted vehicle flying qualities. The short term pitch response has created controversy over the form and substance of any requirements. Currently there are six different methods for evaluation in MIL-STD-1797A. There are many other methods which have been proposed. The biggest problem is that many of these methods often give conflicting results. The overall goal of the present effort is to compare and contrast the Time Domain criterion and the Ralph Smith criterion. By examining these methods on common grounds, areas of agreement and discrepancies can be found. Parametric studies are performed …

A Systems Engineering Approach To Aircraft Kinetic Kill Countermeasures Technology: Development Of An Active Aircraft Defense System For The C/Kc-135 Aircraft, Mark C. Cherry, Bruce R. Dewitt, Christopher G. Dusseault, Joel J. Hagan, Brian S. Peterson Dec 1995

A Systems Engineering Approach To Aircraft Kinetic Kill Countermeasures Technology: Development Of An Active Aircraft Defense System For The C/Kc-135 Aircraft, Mark C. Cherry, Bruce R. Dewitt, Christopher G. Dusseault, Joel J. Hagan, Brian S. Peterson

Theses and Dissertations

Modern Surface to Air Missiles (SAMs) present a significant threat to today's military and civilian aircraft. Current countermeasure systems such as flares and chaff rely on decoying the missile threat and do not provide adequate protection against advanced computerized missiles (Schaffer, 1993:1). An aircraft defense system that actively seeks out and defeats an incoming missile by placing a physical barrier in the missile's path offers a promising alternative to current countermeasures technology. This thesis reports the preliminary design of an active aircraft defense system for the protection of the C/KC-135 aircraft from SAMs. The developed system utilizes a kinetic kill …

Vehicle Thermal Control With A Variable Area Inlet, Thomas R. Layne

Theses and Dissertations

This study developed a variable area inlet and controller that regulated the temperature of an electrical component with ram air. The intent of the variable area inlet was to reduce vehicle drag by eliminating inefficiencies associated with component cooling and fixed area inlets. These inefficiencies arise from vehicles moving at varying speeds through varying air temperatures. The hardware model consisted of an electrical component mounted inside a right-circular cylindrical duct. The variable area inlet, mounted in the front of the duct, consisted of a butterfly valve that was actuated by a stepper controller acted on the feedback signal of a …

Theses and Dissertations

This study investigated the eligibility of the KC-135 air refueling boom for improved capabilities in the areas of control and performance. By using a thick airfoil cross-section for the boom tube, rather than the current circular cross-section, the ability to increase the lift characteristics was verified Prior compiled test data was used for comparison against analytical computer solutions. The possibility and effects of control frequency oscillations were also examined due to the unstable nature of the flow at test conditions. Additionally, the effect of other cross-section shapes, such as the blunt fairing, on the size of the flyable envelope for …

Influence Of A Moving Endwall On The Tip Clearance Vortex In An Axial Compressor Cascade, Lawrence J. Peter Dec 1995

Influence Of A Moving Endwall On The Tip Clearance Vortex In An Axial Compressor Cascade, Lawrence J. Peter

Theses and Dissertations

This experiment involved the design, construction, validation and testing of a new facility for the investigation of vortices generated by compressor rotor blade tip clearance with a moving endwall. A five-tube pressure rake placed downstream of the trailing edge of a cascade of blades measured the pressure field for flow coefficients ranging from 20 to 1.66 and tip clearances of 0.33, 1.0, 1.7 and 2.4 percent chord. Contour plots of mass averaged pressure loss coefficient appear to show the no-flow tip vortex becomes entrained and diffused by the moving wall boundary layer. The high loss region near the moving wall …
