Teamwork In The Workplace: A Discovery Of The Work Processes One Team Used To Meet Its Goals, Thomas Andrew Hassler

Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Theses & Dissertations

A century-old disagreement in academia surrounds the question of whether individuals acting alone accomplish all work or whether workers can truly act in concert to meet management's production requirements. Total Quality Management (TQM) is a powerful force today in the industrial world, and the formation of teams to solve short-term problems is one of its fundamental techniques. This dissertation focuses on a particular TQM team with the purpose of understanding the processes it used to meet its goals. This ten-member team functioned for about one year and was assigned goals leading to improved accelerator reliability. The investigator was a member …

Multigrid Acceleration Of Time-Dependent Solutions Of Navier-Stokes Equations, Sarafa Oladele Ibraheem

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Recent progress in Computational Fluid Dynamics is encouraging scientists to look at fine details of flow physics of problems in which natural unsteady phenomena have hitherto been neglected. The acceleration methods that have proven very successful in steady state computations can be explored for time dependent computations. In this work, an efficient multigrid methods is developed to solve the time-dependent Euler and Navier-Stokes equations. The Beam-Warming ADI method is used as the base algorithm for time stepping calculations. Application of the developed algorithm proved very efficient in selected steady and unsteady test problems. For instance, the inherent unsteadiness present in …

Vibration Control With Piezoelectric Actuation Applied To Nonlinear Panel Flutter Suppression, Zhihong Lai Jan 1994

Vibration Control With Piezoelectric Actuation Applied To Nonlinear Panel Flutter Suppression, Zhihong Lai

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Panel flutter is a large-deflection limit-cycle motion excited by the airflow, which is only on one side of a panel. The objective of this research is to analytically study the panel flutter limit-cycle suppression using nonlinear vibration control techniques with piezoelectric actuation. It is well known that piezoelectric materials are characterized by their ability to produce an electrical charge when subjected to a mechanical strain. The converse piezoelectric effect can be utilized to actuate a panel by applying an electrical field. Piezoelectric actuators are driven by feedback controllers, and control the panel dynamics. For a simply supported panel with piezoelectric …

Finite Element Analysis For Nonlinear Flutter Suppression Of Composite Panels At Elevated Temperatures Using Piezoelectric Materials, Run Chen Zhou Jan 1994

Finite Element Analysis For Nonlinear Flutter Suppression Of Composite Panels At Elevated Temperatures Using Piezoelectric Materials, Run Chen Zhou

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Nonlinear coupled finite element equations of motion are derived for composite panels with embedded piezoelectric layers subjected to aerodynamic, thermal loads and applied electric fields. The nonlinear equations of motion describe the coupling between a structure and an electrical network through the piezoelectric effect. The von Karman large-deflection strain-displacement relations, quasi-steady first-order piston theory aerodynamics, quasi-steady thermal stress theory and linear piezoelectricity theory are used to formulate the nonlinear coupled panel flutter finite element equations of motion in nodal displacements. The governing equations, which are referred to actuator and sensor equations, form a basis for piezoelectric actuation and sensing. Following …

Numerical Simulation Of The Nonlinear Response Of Composite Plates Under Combined Thermal And Acoustic Loading, Jayashree Moorthy Jan 1994

Numerical Simulation Of The Nonlinear Response Of Composite Plates Under Combined Thermal And Acoustic Loading, Jayashree Moorthy

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

A time-domain study of the random response of a laminated plate subjected to combined acoustic and thermal loads is carried out. The features of this problem also include given uniform static inplane forces. The formulation takes into consideration a possible initial imperfection in the flatness of the plate. High decibel sound pressure levels along with high thermal gradients across thickness drive the plate response into nonlinear regimes. This calls for the analysis to use von Karman large deflection strain-displacement relationships. A finite element model that combines the von Karman strains with the first-order shear deformation plate theory is developed. The …

Long Term Tillage Effects On Grain Yield And Soil Properties In A Soybean/Grain Sorghum Rotation, Elbert C. Dickey, Paul J. Jasa, Robert Grisso Jan 1994

Long Term Tillage Effects On Grain Yield And Soil Properties In A Soybean/Grain Sorghum Rotation, Elbert C. Dickey, Paul J. Jasa, Robert Grisso

Biological Systems Engineering: Papers and Publications

In Nebraska, early adopters of conservation tillage, especially those using no-till planting, had some concerns regarding planter performance, early season weed control, and possible yield reductions. Selected tillage and planting systems were used long term to evaluate effects on soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] and grain sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench] yield, soil properties, and residue cover in a non-irrigated rotation. The six tillage and planting systems selected for evaluation were: no-till, no-till with row-crop cultivation, disk, double disk, chisel, and plow. In 1981, two sets of field plots were established near Lincoln, NE, on a Sharpsburg silty …

Monte Carlo Calculation Of Effective Diffusivities In Two- And Three-Dimensional Heterogeneous Materials Of Variable Structure, Mark R. Riley, Fernando J. Muzzio, Helen M. Buettner, Sebastian C. Reyes Jan 1994

Monte Carlo Calculation Of Effective Diffusivities In Two- And Three-Dimensional Heterogeneous Materials Of Variable Structure, Mark R. Riley, Fernando J. Muzzio, Helen M. Buettner, Sebastian C. Reyes

Biological Systems Engineering: Papers and Publications

A Monte Carlo technique that simulates tracer diffusion in multiphase materials of arbitrary complexity has been developed. Effective diffusivities are calculated for structures consisting of either overlapping or nonoverlapping inclusions with diffusivity Dc, distributed in a continuous phase with diffusivity D0>Dc. Two-dimensional simulations for various values of D0/Dc generate normalized diffusivities that correspond closely to their three-dimensional counterparts; they nearly collapse to a common curve when a simple scaling relation is applied.

An Indot Lessons Learned Constructability Program And Integrated Multimedia System, Bob G. Mccullouch, Robert Michael Patty

JTRP Technical Reports

To improve constructability, experienced design and construction engineers often select processes and develop details that require less labor, equipment, or management resources to build. These innovative ideas, enabling circumstances, and their effect on the construction process are not usually recorded in a reusable format. Without such a mechanism, recalling this experience under the appropriate circumstances, or transferring the technology to new management has generally not happened. Further, civil engineers are generally educated to optimize cost by minimizing the material quantity. Through experience gained after graduation, they are expected to pick up options for engineering impact on the labor, equipment, and …

The Components And Benefits Of An Advanced Surface Arterial Traffic Management System, Ted M. Andrews, Kumares C. Sinha Jan 1994

The Components And Benefits Of An Advanced Surface Arterial Traffic Management System, Ted M. Andrews, Kumares C. Sinha

JTRP Technical Reports

Traffic congestion has become an increasing problem on major surface arterial roadways. Demand for accessibility to adjacent land uses yields increased vehicular turning movement activity at driveways and intersections. As turning and cross-road traffic volumes increase, the need for traffic signalization will eventually be warranted. When numerous, independently operating traffic signals are present on a given arterial roadway, adverse effects can result. First, continous movement along the arterials at a desirable speed may not be assured. Second, vehicular delay will increase because of the slower operating speeds and increased number of stops. Third, safety can be threatened as poor traffic …

JTRP Technical Reports

This study details a comprehensive set of guidelines and a work-plan that consists of nine elements that need to be developed in implementing a congesion management system. A procedure has been developed by means of which congestion on roadway links can be identified at a macroscopic level using daily volume counts (ADT) after which, links that are identified as being congested will be subjected to a more detailed microscopic study using hourly volume counts to determine extent, duration and severity of congestion.

Estimating Statewide Vehicle Miles Traveled In Indiana : Draft Final Report, Robert Kwasi Kumapley, Jon D. Fricker Jan 1994

Estimating Statewide Vehicle Miles Traveled In Indiana : Draft Final Report, Robert Kwasi Kumapley, Jon D. Fricker

JTRP Technical Reports

Two cross classification models have been developed in this study for use in the estimation of statewide VMT in Indiana. This is to provide INDOT with an independent source of improved statewide VMT estimates based on driver behavior to supplement the estimates obtained from the traffic count based HPMS method. The models are calibrated to produce VMT estimates for all functional classes in the state network, including combined statewide VMT estimates for functional classes that are not part of the state highway system. The results obtained in the model evaluation process indicate that the models are well calibrated. Model-generated VMT …

Complexation Of Ionomers And Surfactant Molecules Of The Same Charge In A Nonpolar Solvent, William Macknight, Kirill N. Bakeev, Sergey A. Chugunov, Iwao Teraoka, Alexander B. Zezin, Victor A. Kabanov Dec 1993

Complexation Of Ionomers And Surfactant Molecules Of The Same Charge In A Nonpolar Solvent, William Macknight, Kirill N. Bakeev, Sergey A. Chugunov, Iwao Teraoka, Alexander B. Zezin, Victor A. Kabanov

William MacKnight

Complexation between sulfonated polystyrene ionomers and bis(2-ethylhexyl) sulfosuccinate
sodium salt (aerosol OT, AOT) surfactant molecules in m-xylene was studied by ultracentrifugation, vapor
pressure osmometry, viscometry, and dynamic light scattering. When the dilute ionomer solution is mixed
with the AOT soluti6n, complexation takes place for both the slightly aggregated state of AOT and reversed
micelles of AOT containing water. In the presence of excess AOT molecules, some of the AOT are free from
the ionomers, and there are well-defined limiting compositions for complexes of the ionomer and AOT and
for those of the ionomer and AOT micelles. The limiting composition depends …

Dynamic Mechanical And Spectroscopic Study Of Ionomer Blends Based On Carboxylated Or Sulfonated Flexible Polystyrene And Rigid Poly(Diacetylenes) With Functional Side Groups, William Macknight, C. D. Eisenbach, J. Hofmann Dec 1993

Hofmann

William MacKnight

The dynamic mechanical and infrared spectroscopic investigation of ionomer blends of poly-
(diacety1ene)-a nd polystyrene-based ionomers has shown that miscibility of this usually incompatible polymer
pair can be achieved through ion-ion interactions between the blend components. Microphase separation
is prevented through ionic contacts generated during the blend formation; a schematic model of mixing in
the blends is proposed.

Application Of A Molecular Simulation Technique For Prediction Of Phase-Separated Structures Of Semirigrid Model Polyurethanes, William Macknight, Hun-Jan Tao, Cun F. Fan, Shaw L. Hsu Dec 1993

Application Of A Molecular Simulation Technique For Prediction Of Phase-Separated Structures Of Semirigrid Model Polyurethanes, William Macknight, Hun-Jan Tao, Cun F. Fan, Shaw L. Hsu

William MacKnight

A combination of a molecular simulation method and the Monte Carlo method has been
succe88fully utilizedto calculate phase diagrams of model polyurethanes. In our model, the entropic contribution
of the Flory-Huggins expression has been modified to incorporate the contribution arising from orientation
of hard segments. The constraint associated with chain rigidity of hard segments has been explicitly considered.
In addition, the interaction term has been modified to include the relative packing of hard segments. Phase
diagrams of various MDI-PPG model polyurethanes have thus been predicted utihhg these modifications.
The effecta of soft- and hard-segment lengths have been considered and the …

Phase Behavior In Copolymer Blends Of Poly(P-Chlorostyrene-Co-O-Chlorostyrene) And Phenylsulfonylated Poly(2,6-Dimethyl-1,4-Phenylene Oxide), William Macknight, R. Vukovic, G. Bogdanic, Vjera Kuresevic, M. Tomaskovic, F. E. Karasz

William MacKnight

The miscibility of random copolymers of o-chlorostyrene and p -chlorostyrene [ P (oC1Stco-
pC1St)] with partially phenylsulfonylated poly (2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylenoex ide)
( SPPO) copolymers has been studied, using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) to
establish Tg behavior. It already has been established that the isomeric effect of the chlorine
substitution on miscibility is large. Thus the para-chloro-substituted styrenic homopolymer
is miscible with all SPPOs containing more than - 5 mol % phenylsulfonylation, whereas
the ortho-chloro-substituted homopolymer is immiscible with the entire range of SPPO
copolymer compositions (and also with the respective homopolymers) . As a result of this
asymmetric behavior of the …

Thermal Degradation Of Segmented Polyurethanes, William Macknight, Zoran S. Petrovic, Zoltan Zavargo, Joseph H. Flynn

William MacKnight

Thermal degradation of polyurethane samples was studied by a thermogravimetric method. The effect of soft-segment length and soft-segment concentration on activation energy of the degradation process was measured. Three methods of calculation gave activation energies at different stages of the very complex weight loss process. It was shown that at initial stages of the weight loss the process was dominated by hard-segment degradation. Activation energy of the whole process calculated by the Ozawa-Flynn method did not offer clear insight into the structure-stability relationship of polyurethanes. The second method showed that activation energy of the initial stage of degradation increased with …
