A two parameter incremental shear-volume coupling equation is presented for sand. The equation is based upon experimental data and gives predictions that are in excellent agreement with data over a range of relative densities and stress conditions. Empirical expressions for the two parameters based on incorporated in a simple shear pore pressure element model and the predictions of the model are compared with both saturated undrained cyclic strain and cyclic load tests. It is found that, provided a threshold strain is incorporated, the model predictions are in very good agreement with the laboratory data over a wide range of stress …

A digital control servo-hydraulic triaxial test facility with full data acquisition has been developed at Nottingham University as part of the UK Science and Engineering Research Council initiative in earthquake engineering. This apparatus is currently being used to investigate the response of a coarse silt contaminated by kaolin clay to cyclic stress and strain. High quality deformation data is generated by on sample instrumentation and enables the stiffness at very low strain levels to be determined accurately. This paper describes the development of the facility and presents some results of the tests carried out to date.

The paper presents departures that have to be made in the conduct of block vibration tests from the standard method and in the analysis of test data under unusual conditions. Disturbed soil condition under an edge of the block leads to occurrence of double peaks in amplitude versus frequency curves from vertical vibration test. Two methods have been devised to analyze such double peaks. The first method assumes a correlation between dynamic coefficients. The dynamic properties can be predicted from non-dimensional curves of correction factor versus ratio of effective base area. The second method assumes linear variation of coefficient of …

The predictive capabilities of the elastoplastic-viscoplastic bonding surface mode, with emphasis response of cohesive soils subjected to cyclic loading, are discussed herein. This model, which represents a generalized three-dimensional constitutive formulation for isotropic cohesive soils, is developed within the framework coupled elastoplasticity-viscoplasticity and critical state soil mechanics.

The method of geosynthetic reinforced earth incorporates a flexible but tension resistant synthetic material in soil to increase the tensile resistance of the composite. In this study, both static and dynamic responses of an Ottawa 30-40 sand reinforced with a nonwoven geosynthet1c, Bidim C-34, were investigated. Static triaxial tests were first conducted to examine the influence of the reinforcement on strength, Young's modulus, and Poisson's ratio of the composite soil. The vast potential of geotextiles for separation (reinforcement in pavements and rail roads is yet to be fully exploited in India, despite the initial successful trials. This is partly due to the lack of sufficient test data on the behavior under repetitive loading of indigenous geotextiles. This paper reports typical triaxial test results on reinforced and unreinforced specimens before and after cyclic loading. The reinforcement used is a needle punched polypropylene geotextile manufactured in India. The results reported include strength before and after cyclic loading (cyclic loading under both drained and undrained conditions), modulus of resilience and plastic strain. Limited …

This paper presents the results of laboratory scale model footing tests which were conducted for determining the cyclic load resistance of sand subgrades reinforced with semi-flexible vertical elements. The tests were conducted in a sandbox having a length of 91.5 cm, width 15.25 cm, and height of 61.0 cm. Steel bars 1. 58 mm in diameter were used as reinforcing elements. Tests were also conducted by using rough reinforcing elements. The test results indicate that the value of coefficient of elastic uniform compression of the footing on sand increases with the provision of vertical reinforcement in the sand subgrade. Rough …

A series of triaxial cyclic tests are performed on Hostun sand; each test undergoes several two-way, strain-controlled cyclic loadings under drained conditions. The purpose of these tests is to investigate the behavior of this sand under complex loadings. This paper extends the previous works during the last years, and aims at showing that the non-linear incremental constitutive equations can describe the behavior of saturated sand subjected to various stress loadings in drained conditions.

For the aseismic design of a pier foundation constructed on a lightly cemented dense gravel deposit of a 3,910m-long suspension bridge, cyclic and monotonic undrained triaxial tests were performed on undisturbed specimens with a diameter of 30cm taken from the deposit under a sea depth of about 55m. Using the results of the cyclic undrained triaxial tests together with irregular cyclic stresses evaluated for the design earthquake motion by a dynamic FEM analysis, maximum strains in the gravel deposit were obtained by the cumulative damage concept. In order to investigate undrained behavior of saturated sand, three types of undrained triaxial tests were performed for saturated Toyoura sand, i.e., cyclic loading test with (DTU-test) and without (DU-test) constant initial shear stress and tests in which constant rate axial strain and cyclic axial stress were applied to a specimen simultaneously (DCU-test). Cyclic hollow cylinder tests have been performed on sand and clay under undrained conditions. In order to point out the effects of the rotation of principal axes, a constant axial stress is maintained during the application of torsional shear. On this stress path, the behavior of the two materials is studied in terms of stress-strain relationship, pore pressure, failure criterion and also rotation of strain principal axes.

The deformation behavior of sand under simple shear loading was studied. The relation between the shear stress ratio and fabric factor, and the relationship between the fabric and dilatancy rate of a sand were developed. Thus the stress-dilatancy relation for sand was derived. Adopting the concept that the volumetric changes of the sample induced by the cyclic shear stress were compensated by the volumetric changes due to vertical stress changes in the constant volume simple shear tests, the relation of shear stress ratio and vertical stress change was derived.

The degradation behavior of soil may become important when considering the response of soft clay under cyclic loading condition. A nonlinear model was proposed by Idriss, et al. to account for the degradation behavior based on the controlled-strain test. By adopting a numerical procedure, the data obtained in controlled-stress cyclic triaxial test can be used to find the degradation parameter defined in the nonlinear degradation model proposed by Idriss, et al. This paper presents a part from a series of tests performed to evaluate the static shear behavior of normally consolidated and over-consolidated clays after cyclic loading effect. The results demonstrated that the static undrained stress-strain behavior of these types of clays was affected by their relative stiffness. Based on the equivalent over-consolidation hypothesis and the experimental results it was able to construct the shear characteristics degradation relationships for the normally consolidated clays. The predicted results were compared with the measured test data and their well agreement was confirmed.

In this study, equivalent shear moduli (or shear-wave velocities) and their variations with shearing strain at the Lotung seismic experiment site were back-calculated from recorded downhole array ground motions. Ground motion data for various levels of shaking (peak ground surface accelerations ranging from 0.03g to 0.21g) recorded during seven earthquakes were used in the analyses. Results show that downhole array ground motion data can be used to infer in-situ dynamic soil properties over a wide strain range.

In-situ measurement of the dynamic characteristics of surficial soils is becoming more common in geotechnical practice for prediction of ground surface motions from earthquake excitation and to evaluate foundations for vibrating equipment. Techniques for these measurements have been under development at the University Of British Columbia (U.B.C.) since 1980. The paper discusses many practical considerations with respect to equipment (sources, receivers, trigger, etc.) and procedures that can affect the interpretation and analysis of seismic cone results.
