An Investigation Of The Dynamic Response Of The Activated Sludge Process, Tin-Bai Pan Dec 1980

An Investigation Of The Dynamic Response Of The Activated Sludge Process, Tin-Bai Pan

Dissertations

A new mathematical model, derived from first principles of mass balance, is proposed for describing the mass transfer response of an activated sludge aeration tank in terms of a fluidized bed. The operational data to verify the proposed model were taken from an existing conventional wastewater treatment plant and a bench scale pilot plant.

The mass transfer rate, (KdAs), was presented by an empirical dimensionless group function as follows:

((KdAs)Dp/Dv) = fAc (uDp/ν)a ((ν/Dν)(MLSS))b

Or

Sh = f(Ac/As ) …

The Inert Gas Effect On The Rate Of Evaporation Of Zinc And Cadmium, P. C.S. Wu, Thomas J. O'Keefe, Fred Kisslinger

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

An experimental study has been made to investigate the effect of argon and helium on the rate of evaporation of zinc and cadmium under one atmosphere pressure at temperatures ranging from 500 to 850°C. The experimental results were compared with the maximum rates calculated using the effusion formula as well as with values obtained using two different types of equations based on kinetic theory, diffusion theory, and empirical data. Equations have been derived for expressing the rate of evaporation of zinc and cadmium in both argon and helium as functions of temperature of the liquid zinc and cadmium. It was …

Frictional Performance Of Pavements And Estimates Of Accident Probability [Dec. 1980], James L. Burchett, Rolands L. Rizenbergs

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

Objectives of this study were to evaluate standard and experimental surfaces throughout Kentucky in terms of skid resistance and effects of traffic, and to provide criteria for judging suitability of these surfaces to satisfy requirements for skid resistance and economics. The effects of traffic were quantified by regression analysis and scatter of data. Criteria included an estimate of accident risks, effects of speed on skid resistance, and seasonal variations in skid resistance.

Pavements on low volume roads (less than 1,000 vehicles per day) maintained adequate skid resistances. Open-graded friction courses, with the possible exception of sections using phosphate slag aggregate, …

Sound Absorption In N2-H2O Gas Mixtures At Elevated Temperatures, Roger W. Meredith Dec 1980

Sound Absorption In N2-H2O Gas Mixtures At Elevated Temperatures, Roger W. Meredith

Physics Theses & Dissertations

Sound absorption measurements were conducted in N2 -H2O gas mixtures at 297, 343, and 387 Kelvin to determine the location of the vibrational relaxation peak of nitrogen on the frequency/pressure, (f/P), axis as a function of humidity and temperature. At low humidities the best fit of the data is to a linear relationship between (f/P)max and humidity (h) yields a slope of 1 .84 X 104 Hz/ atm mole fraction at all three temperatures. The slope is the same as that reported by Zuckerwar and Griffin (2.00 X 104 Hz/atm mole fraction) but is …

Line shapes were iteratively fitted to the Voigt function at a Doppler width of 29.54 MHz (HWHM) resulting in values for the integrated line• strength, ( S), of (0.144 +/- 0.007 ) x ·10-20 cm-1/molecule cm-2, line center frequency, (υο) of 1129.426 cm-1 and the Lorentzian contributions to half width, (α …

A Transient, One-Dimensional, Discrete-Element Transport Model For Predicting Hydrodynamic Conditions And Three-Layer Non-Equilibrium Pollutant Concentrations As Dissolved In Water And As Adsorbed On Different Classes Of Sediment In Controlled Rivers And Tidal Estuaries, Gary W. Zimmerman Dec 1980

Zimmerman

Masters Theses

A transient one-dimensional mathematical model for simulating the transport of pollutant effluents from industrial plants is presented.

The Eulerion fluid-in-discrete-element (FLIDE) formulation employs the integral forms of the conservation principles of water mass, sediment mass, and pollutant mass in variable size discrete elements that span the flow region. The transport of the pollutant effluents are modeled as dissolved and adsorbed suspended sediment in the suspended sediment and slurry sediment layer and as dissolved and stationary resident sediment in the resident sediment layer.

The contributions of vertical variations of the velocity components and pollutant concentrations in the suspended sediment and slurry …

A Study Of The Models Describing Fines And Filler Retention By Utilizing Cationic Starch As The Retention Aid, Nen-Sen Chen Dec 1980

A Study Of The Models Describing Fines And Filler Retention By Utilizing Cationic Starch As The Retention Aid, Nen-Sen Chen

Masters Theses

Fines and filler retention under dynamic conditions was studied in this thesis work. Zeta potential of samples are also measured. Dynamic Retention/Drainage Jar and Lazer-Zee Meter were used to accomplish this work. The results have been analyzed by statistical methods. When cationic starch was utilized as a retention aid the pH affected its efficiency, probably because the charge of cationic starch was dependent on pH. This effect was detected by utilizing two-way analysis of variance to find the sources of its interactions with molecular weight and agitation rate. The mechanism was thus determined. At pH 3 and 4, charge neutralization …

The Performance Of Crossed-Vane Swirl Meters, H. L. Lee, William W. Durgin Nov 1980

The Performance Of Crossed-Vane Swirl Meters, H. L. Lee, William W. Durgin

Office of the Provost Scholarship

Vortimeters consisting of vanes rotating about pipe axes are frequently used to indicate the swirl present in pump columns and feedlines from sumps and in piping networks. Since the design of such devices varies widely, the study described herein was undertaken to identify salient design parameters and to evaluate a device designed according to information available in the literature.

An apparatus which could produce known amounts of angular momentum in a pipeline was verified by direct measurement of axial and tangential velocity profiles. By using the assumption that a vortimeter, with vanes spanning only the rotational core, responded to an …

Department of Geological and Mining Engineering and Sciences Publications

Grain size analysis of samples representing all sampleable portions of the airfall deposit produced by the Fuego volcano in Guatemala on 14 October 1974 form the basis for estimating the total grain size distribution of tephra from this eruption. The region enclosed by each isopach has a particular average grain size distribution which can be weighted proportionally to its percentage volume. The grain size of pyroclastic avalanche deposits produced during the eruption are also included. The total grain size distribution calculated as a sum of weighted distributions has a median grain size of 0.8∅ (0.6mm) and a sorting coefficient (σ∅) …

Use Of Economic Analyses And Dynamic Programming In The Selection Of Projects For Resurfacing, Charles V. Zegeer, Kenneth R. Agent, Rolands L. Rizenbergs Nov 1980

Use Of Economic Analyses And Dynamic Programming In The Selection Of Projects For Resurfacing, Charles V. Zegeer, Kenneth R. Agent, Rolands L. Rizenbergs

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

The objective of this paper was to develop a dynamic programming procedure using economic analyses to assist in optimizing expenditures in pavement resurfacing programs. Benefit relationships were determined from expected accident reduction, improved comfort, time saving, fuel savings, and maintenance savings. The only cost input to the program was the resurfacing cost of each project.

Dynamic programming was adapted to the selection of projects for resurfacing in Kentucky. Over $8.4 million of additional user benefits would have been realized in 1976 if dynamic programming had been used in selecting projects. The benefit-cost ratio of sections selected for resurfacing by the …
