Thermal Transport In Lithium Ion Batteries: An Experimental Investigation Of Interfaces And Granular Materials, Aalok Jaisheela Uday Gaitonde

Open Access Theses

Increasing usage and recent accidents due to lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries exploding or catching on fire has inspired research on the characterization and thermal management of these batteries. In cylindrical 18650 cells, heat generated during the battery's charge/discharge cycle is poorly dissipated to the surrounding through its metallic case due to the poor thermal conductivity of the jelly roll, which is spirally wound with many interfaces between electrodes and the polymeric separator. This work presents a technique to measure the thermal conduction across the metallic case-plastic separator interface, which ultimately limits heat transfer out of the jelly roll.

The polymeric separator …

Dropwise Condensation Dynamics In Humid Air, Julian Eduardo Castillo Chaco Oct 2014

Dropwise Condensation Dynamics In Humid Air, Julian Eduardo Castillo Chaco

Open Access Theses

Dropwise condensation of atmospheric water vapor is important in multiple practical engineering applications. The roles of environmental factors and surface morphology/chemistry on the condensation dynamics need to be better understood to enable efficient water-harvesting, dehumidication, and other psychrometric processes. Systems and surfaces that promote faster condensation rates and self-shedding of condensate droplets could lead to improved mass transfer rates and higher water yields in harvesting applications. The thesis presents the design and construction of an experimental facility that allows visualization of the condensation process as a function of relative humidity. Dropwise condensation experiments are performed on a vertically oriented, hydrophobic …

Computational Fluid Dynamics Analysis Of Freeze Drying Process And Equipment, Nikhil P. Varma Oct 2014

Computational Fluid Dynamics Analysis Of Freeze Drying Process And Equipment, Nikhil P. Varma

Open Access Theses

Freeze drying is an important, but expensive, inefficient and time consuming process in the pharmaceutical, chemical and food processing industries. Computational techniques could be a very effective tool in predictive design and analysis of both freeze drying process and equipment. This work is an attempt at using Computational Fluid Dynamics(CFD) and numerical simulations as a tool for freeze drying process and equipment design.

Pressure control is critical in freeze dryers, keeping in view the product stability. In industrial freeze dryers, loss of pressure control can lead to loss of an entire batch. Pressure variation within the chamber could also lead …

Determination Of Heat Transfer In Under-Floor Plenums In Buildings With Under-Floor Air Distribution Systems, Yan Xue Jan 2013

Determination Of Heat Transfer In Under-Floor Plenums In Buildings With Under-Floor Air Distribution Systems, Yan Xue

Open Access Theses

Under-Floor Air Distribution (UFAD) systems have potential advantages of energy saving and indoor air quality improvement over conventional well-mixed systems. As a ventilation strategy for buildings, a UFAD system provides conditioned air to occupied rooms through diffusers in raised floors and the air is exhausted through return grilles at the ceiling level.

Many previous researches have focused on the energy saving and air quality improvement by UFAD systems because of their high supply air temperature and room air stratification. However, few of them paid attention to the effects of the heat transfer through floor slabs on the energy performance of …
