The kinetics of the reaction between phosgene and a fly ash composed of 97 weight percent alumina and silica has been studied over a temperature range of 450 to 800(DEGREES)C and a phosgene partial pressure range of 0.02 to 0.9 atm. A microbalance was used in obtaining initial conversion rate and extended conversion-time data, and B.E.T. surface areas and specific phosgene chemisorption weights as functions of conversion. In Situ Characterization Of Adsorbed Species On Methanol Synthesis Catalysts By Ft-Ir Spectroscopy , James Francis Edwards

Transmission infrared spectroscopy was used to characterize adsorbed species on methanol synthesis catalysts during reaction conditions. A copper carbonyl, bidentate formate, and methoxy species were identified as stable surface groups. An adsorbed formaldehyde species was unstable at the reaction temperature, but could be observed on the catalyst surface at the beginning of the reaction. Surface species were very similar for feed mixtures of (1) carbon monoxide and hydrogen, (2) carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, and hydrogen, and (3) formic acid and hydrogen. The pharmacokinetics of chlortetracycline (CTC) were studied in healthy and diseased (fowl cholera) turkeys. Because the presence of metal cations in the gastrointestinal tract can inhibit absorption, the effect a metal chelator (citric acid) has on absorption was investigated. The concentration profiles in the plasma and tissues were adequately simulated by a physiologically based model;The relationship between plasma level and dose was evaluated by orally introducing 10, 15, and 20 mg CTC/kg. A novel 2 stage process for the separation and recovery of the Cu, Fe and S from chalcopyrite (CuFeS(,2)) was investigated. In stage 1, CuFeS(,2) particles are reduced in the catholyte chamber of a fluidized bed electrochemical reactor (FBER). A digenite (Cu(,1.8)S) product layer forms on the unreacted CuFeS(,2) and Fe(II) dissolves into the catholyte solution. All the Cu remains in the solid phase. The selective oxidation of C(,4) hydrocarbons to maleic anhydride over NiMoO(,4) and CoMoO(,4) catalysts containing excess MoO(,3) was studied using a fixed bed, integral reactor system. The synthesis of pure phases and the techniques for incorporating excess MoO(,3) have been investigated. Synthesis techniques included precipitation, solid state reaction, and impregnation. Extensive characterization of the catalyst has been performed using complementary instrumentation techniques, including laser Raman spectroscopy, Raman microprobe spectroscopy, x-ray diffraction, x-ray fluorescence, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and energy dispersive x-ray analysis. Several chemical and physical cleaning methods for removing sulfur and ash-forming mineral matter from various kinds of bituminous coal were investigated. These methods involved grinding coal to a fine size to expose or liberate the mineral matter and either physical separation or chemical leaching of the resulting particles. By combining these methods, a multistep process was developed and demonstrated for producing super clean coal. In this process, the coal is first leached with a dilute sodium carbonate solution under oxygen pressure at 150°C to oxidize pyritic sulfur and some of the organic sulfur to produce water-soluble sulfur species.
