Lead acid batteries have been a very reliable rechargeable battery since its inception in the mid-1800s. Lithium-Ion batteries have been sought out for their light-weight and capacity of holding large amounts of energy in a small amount of space. Few studies have been conducted in the use of lead in lithium-ion batteries.

In this thesis, lead-doped carbon nanofibers were produced by using the Forcespinning® method and used as an anode on a lithium-ion battery. This thesis presents the successful development of biocompatible Polyvinyl Butyral (PVB), PVB/Polylysine and PVB/Tannic Acid (TA)/Polylysine fibers from an ethanol solution, Polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB), PHB/Polylysine, PHB/TA/Polylysine fibers from a chloroform solution and Chitosan (CH)/Pullulan (PL)/TA and CH/PL/TA/Polylysine fibers from an aqueous solution. The fibers were mass produced utilizing the Forcespinning® (FS) technology. The morphology of the fibers was characterized using a scanning electron microscope (SEM) and the fibers average diameter was calculated. In the present work, a novel multidirectional pin-on-disc wear testing device designated CNC-POD (computer-numerical-control pin-on-disc) capable of replicating the cross-shear motions experienced by a prosthesis in vivo was designed and developed in the UTRGV in order to evaluate the wear resistance of new biomaterials. The CNC-POD consists of six temperature-controlled pin-on-disc stations mounted on a two-axis CNC table (X-Y). Each pin-on-disc station is load-programmable up to 510 Newtons (115 pounds). Understanding the internal heat generation of the railroad bearing elastomer suspension element during operation is essential to predict its dynamic response and structural integrity, as well as to predict the thermal behavior of the complete railroad bearing assembly including the bearing adapter. The latter is essential for sensor selection and placement within the adapter (e.g., typical temperature sensors have operating ranges of up to 125°C or 257°F). The internal heat generation is a function of the loss modulus, strain, and frequency. Conventional Lithium-Ion Battery (LIB) electrolytes have serious safety concerns because of highly flammability. In order to mitigate this drawback, alternative electrolytes with low volatility and non-flammable need to be synthesis. Ionic liquids (ILs) and mixed organic ionic liquid electrolytes (MOILEs) are the most suitable replacement for the highly flammable commercial organic electrolytes. In this academic investigation, a new perspective on the electrochemical performance of the ionic liquid EMI-TFSI as an alternate non-flammable electrolyte. In parallel, the use of Forcespun nanofibers as binder-free anodes will be analyzed to further improve overall electrochemical performance.

This thesis proposes a buffered dual access mode cache to reduce power consumption in multicore caches for embedded systems. This cache is called Buffer Controlled Cache (BCC cache). The proposed scheme introduces a pre-cache buffer to determine how to access the cache. The proposed cache shows better prediction rates and lower power consumption than conventional caches, such as Phased cache and Way-prediction cache. For single core implementation, Simplescalar and Cacti simulators have been used for these simulations using SPEC2000 benchmark programs. The nonlinear dynamics of electrostatically actuated micro-electro-mechanical system (MEMS) cantilever resonators are investigated. The applied Alternating Current (AC) voltage is in the realm of superharmonic resonance of the second order (near one-fourth of the natural frequency of the resonator) and hard excitations. Method of Multiple Scales (MMS) and Reduced Order Models (ROMs) are used to solve the dimensionless partial differential equation (PDE) of motion along with boundary and initial conditions. Surgical site infections are costly to both patients and hospitals, increase patient mortality, and are the most common form of a hospital acquired infection. Gynecological cancer surgery patients are already at higher risk of developing an infection due to the suppression of their immune system. This research leverages popular data mining techniques to create a prediction model to identify high risk patients. Today, the most secure steganographic schemes for digital images embed secret messages while minimizing a distortion function that describes the local complexity of the content. Distortion functions are heuristically designed to predict the modeling error, or in other words, how difficult it would be to detect a single change to the original image in any given area. An experimental investigation was taken on a 63-021 NACA airfoil, to characterize lift and drag and how the effects of sinusoidal leading edges affect the aerodynamic properties. A theoretical model is also purposed by implementing a perturbation on thin-airfoil theory.

Two sets of airfoils were machined and tested inside a low-speed open circuit wind tunnel. Data from a pressure scanner and particle image velocity will give an insight of how the modified leading edges affect the aerodynamic properties. A Fourier series expansion was used to solve for the lifting-line model, by use of thin-airfoil theory and complex number theory.

The study of the deposited nitrides is conducted by spectroscopy, diffraction, and submicron scale microscope methods. This paper presents a flexible multi-core cache memory simulator to design and evaluate memory hierarchies for general-purpose or embedded processors. The proposed simulator needs to work with Pin, which is an open-source dynamic instrumentation tool provided by Intel. Electrochemical methods are widely used for chronic neurochemical sensing, but thus far, the organic solution redox reactions fouled the electrodes' surface. It caused the reduction of sensitivity and the electrodes' lifetime.

Here, we present the boron-doped nanocrystalline diamond microelectrodes (BDUNCD) as the next generation electrode material for neurochemical sensor development. To aid in long-term chronic monitoring of neurochemicals, they have a wide window of electrochemical potential, extremely low background current, and excellent chemical inertness. NOx (NO and NO2) exhaust gas sensors for diesel powered vehicles have traditionally consisted of porous platinum (Pt) electrodes along with a dense ZrO2 based electrolyte. Advancement in diesel engine technology results in lower NOx emissions. Although Pt is chemically and mechanically tolerant to the extreme exhaust gas environment, it is also a strong catalyst for oxygen reduction, which can interfere with the detection of NOx at concentrations below 100 ppm. It is aimed to measure the weak charge of the proton, which has never been measured, at 4% precision at low momentum transfer. The experiment is performed by scattering electrons from protons and exploiting parity violation in the weak interaction at low four-momentum transfer.

In this dissertation, an RF MEMS variable capacitor suitable for applications requiring ultrawide capacitive tuning ranges is reported. The device uses an electrostatically tunable liquid dielectric interface to continuously vary the capacitance without the use of any moving parts. As compared to existing MEMS varactors in literature, this device has an extremely simple design that can be implemented using simple fabrication methods that do not necessitate the use of clean room equipment. As drinking water sources become increasingly impaired, enhanced removal of natural organic matter (NOM) may be required to curb formation of disinfection byproducts (DBPs) upon chlor(am)ination. While carbon nanotubes (CNTs) can adsorb NOM, their properties for DBP precursor adsorption have not been elucidated. Nine types of CNTs were assessed for trihalomethane (THM), dihaloacetonitrile (DHAN), and total N-nitrosamine (TONO) precursor adsorption. The selection of an appropriate seismic steel system (braced frame, moment frame, shear wall, etc.) is often influenced by architectural considerations.
