In this study, HfO2 [hafnium oxide] thin films are investigated extensively as part of indium gallium zinc oxide (IGZO) thin film transistor (TFT) devices. They are incorporated into the TFTs, both as a gate insulator and a passivation layer. First, the HfO2 [hafnium oxide] films themselves are investigated through an annealing study and through I-V and C-V measurements. Then, HfO2 [hafnium oxide] is suggested as a replacement for commonly used SiO2 [silicon dioxide] gate insulator, as it has a dielectric constant that is 4 – 6 times higher. The family of layered carbides and nitrides known as MAX phase ceramics combine many attractive properties of both ceramics and metals due to their nanolaminate crystal structure and are promising potential candidates for application in future nuclear reactors. This thesis reports on the background, design, and analysis of an experiment focused on determining the effects of energetic heavy ion irradiations on polycrystalline samples of titanium silicon carbide 312, titanium aluminum carbide 312, and titanium aluminum carbide 211. An in depth literature review of Incoloy Alloy 800H was conducted and presented to summarize the current understanding of microstructural evolution under irradiation and secondary phase precipitate stability. Due to a lack of radiation induced segregation (RIS) data for Alloy 800H, Isopleth sections varying Cr, Ni, Ti, and Si were generated from a computational thermodynamics approach using ThermoCalc and analyzed to compensate for knowledge related to radiation induced precipitates (RIP’s). Uses of metamaterials, also known as negative index materials (NIMs), are wide ranging and include lenses that have a resolution beyond the diffraction limit, incredibly small antenna, and cloaking devices for optical, infrared, and microwave wavelengths.

The unique properties of metamaterials are not found in any naturally occurring material. By having simultaneously negative values for ε [electrical permittivity] and μ [magnetic permeability], a metamaterial can have a negative index of refraction over a certain frequency band. In this study C₁₂Al₁₄O₃₃ [mayenite] is computationally modeled, synthesized, and compared to literature in order to build a knowledge base for the further study of this compound. It is hoped that this study of mayenite will lead to the development of a new transparent conductive oxide that uses earth abundant elements instead of rare earth elements. For this study polycrystalline mayenite was synthesized using traditional solid-state synthesis techniques, and growth of a single crystal was then attempted. Many nanostructured materials have been shown to have performance gains strongly dependent on the grain size in the material. Nanostructured thermoelectric materials for instance have found great performance increases through reduction of the grain sizes, due mostly to the scattering of phonons while retaining a good electrical conductivity. Disordering plays a key role in the response of spinel to a wide range of irradiation conditions. Photo-crosslinkable polymeric biomaterials have emerged in the field of biomedical research to promote tissue regeneration. For example, scaffolds that can be crosslinked and hardened in situ have been known to make suitable implant alternatives. Since injectable and photo-crosslinkable biomaterials offer the advantage of being minimally invasive, they have emerged to compete with autografts, a current highly invasive method to repair diseased tissue. Low-density lipoprotein particles in blood plasma invade the endothelium and become oxidized, creating risk of CHD associated with atherosclerosis, the main underlying condition in coronary heart disease. Oxidation products of the phospholipid 1-palmitoyl- 2-arachidonoyl-sn-glycerol-3-phosphatidylcholine (PAPC) are bioactive components of minimally oxidized LDL that stimulate endothelial cells that line the artery, leading to monocyte binding and atherosclerosis. It is hypothesized that the regulation of the monocyte recruitment pathway by these oxidized phospholipids is mediated by the binding of OxPAPC to one or more mediating proteins. Five materials encompassing various grades of carbon steel were received from retired and ex-service petroleum refinery equipment for root-cause evaluation of High Temperature Hydrogen Attack (HTHA) damage at UTK. These materials were submitted by three contributors: Irving Oil Refinery (IOR #1110-2), Valero (#67 & #1252134), and Phillips 66 (#555-S1 & #555-S2) on behalf of American Petroleum Institute (API). These materials originated from various flange-to-pipe welded components that were exposed in hydrogen pressure environment at elevated temperatures (> 640°F and >70 psia).

This study evaluates the use of a ceramic coating on the Zr-alloy cladding within a PWR using four ceramic compounds of 5 and 10 micron thicknesses: ZrO2, TiAlN, Ti2AlC, and Ti3AlC2. The film’s impact is assessed for variation on: reactivity, fuel cycle length, maximum temperature, film’s roughness, and transient conditions. The reactivity is analyzed using the following methods: change in the multiplication factor (k) each film introduces to the system using the ABH method, and Monte Carlo software (MCNP). "A dip tester was designed and built at Missouri University of Science and Technology to test the effects of the primary alloying elements (Mn, Si, and Al) of Fe-Mn-Al-Si-C type 3rd generation advanced high strength steel (AHSS) alloys, dipping superheat, and dipping speed on the heat transfer during rapid solidification. The difficulties associated with casting 3rd generation AHSS were compiled as well to serve as a best-practices guide. The first part evaluates the addition of Hydrostar, Cyquest N-900, DXG-F7, and Guartec EW to copper electrowinning electrolyte to affect MnO2 deposition on coated titanium anodes (CTAs). "The main objective of this project was to evaluate the capacity of strong porous silicate (13-93) bioactive glass scaffolds prepared by a robocasting technique to regenerate bone and stimulate angiogenesis in a rat calvarial defect model. These inclusions are typically formed during liquid steel processing at the ladle metallurgy furnace (LMF) and subsequently modified by calcium to form less harmful liquid inclusions. Unfortunately, spinel inclusions are still sometimes observed in samples taken from the tundish and coil after calcium treatment.

"This study was performed to examine the effects of cement replaced by high volumes of Class C fly-ash on durability characteristics of concrete up to 120 days. Specifically, this study investigates possibility of amending American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) to allow High Volume Fly-ash (HVFA) concrete to cure until later ages prior to testing instead of 28 days. Five mix designs were compared with varying fly-ash percentages from 0 to 70% (by total cementitious mass). No other additives were present in any of the five mix designs.
