Thermography Detection On The Fatigue Damage, Bing Yang Dec 2003

Thermography Detection On The Fatigue Damage, Bing Yang

Doctoral Dissertations

It has always been a great temptation in finding new methods to in-situ “watch” the material fatigue-damage processes so that in-time reparations will be possible, and failures or losses can be minimized to the maximum extent. Realizing that temperature patterns may serve as fingerprints for stress-strain behaviors of materials, a state-of-art infrared (IR) thermography camera has been used to “watch” the temperature evolutions of both crystalline and amorphous materials “cycle by cycle” during fatigue experiments in the current research.

The two-dimensional (2D) thermography technique records the surface-temperature evolutions of materials. Since all plastic deformations are related to heat dissipations, thermography …

Effects Of Environment And Frequency On The Fatigue Behavior Of The Spallation Neutron Source (Sns) Target Container Material - 316 Ln Stainless Steel, Hongbo Tian

Doctoral Dissertations

As the candidate target container material of the new Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) being designed and constructed at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), 316 low-carbon nitrogen-added (LN) stainless steel (SS) will operate in an aggressive environment, subjected to intense fluxes of high-energy protons and neutrons while exposed to liquid mercury. The SNS is an accelerator-based neutron source that provides pulsed beams of spallation neutrons by bombarding a mercury target with 1 GeV protons. The function of the SNS is to convert a short pulse (< 1 ms, 60 Hz, 17 kJ/pulse), high-average-power (1 MW), 1-GeV proton beam into 18 lower-energy (< 1eV), short-pulsed (~ tens of ms) neutron beams optimized for use by neutron-scattering instruments.

The current project is oriented toward materials studies regarding the effects of test environment …

Integrated Field Emission Electron Guns With Single Vertically Aligned Carbon Nanofiber Cathodes, Michael Alberto Guillorn Dec 2003

Integrated Field Emission Electron Guns With Single Vertically Aligned Carbon Nanofiber Cathodes, Michael Alberto Guillorn

Doctoral Dissertations

Nanostructured carbon-based materials hold great promise as field emission (FE) cathodes for integrated FE devices. These materials display remarkable FE properties as a consequence of their unique chemical and physical properties. Among this class of materials, the vertically aligned carbon nanofiber (VACNF) is exceptional in that its synthesis can be deterministically controlled. This has enabled the characterization of the FE properties of individual VACNF grown on Si substrates. The results of these studies indicate that the VACNF is an excellent candidate for integrated FE electron sources where the generation of a focused electron beam from a microscale structure is required. …

Controlled-Stress Large-Area Pulsed Laser Deposition Of Yttria Stabilized Zirconia, Paul C. Rounsavall

Theses and Dissertations

The US Air Force has need of parabolic-shaped membrane mirrors for surveillance satellites. The current polymer membrane technology has been unable to overcome shape deformation problems caused by intrinsic stresses from the membrane casting and mounting processes. One proposed solution was to coat the membrane mirrors with a stressed coating to compensate for shape deformations. Thus, the research presented in this dissertation produced controlled-stress large-area pulsed laser deposition (PLD) grown thin films on polymer substrates and investigated optical time-of-flight (TOF) sensor systems and Raman spectroscopy for control for the PLD process with respect to thin film stress. Initially, the PLD-grown …

Effect Of Modified Clay-Zeolite Pigment On The Viscoelastic, Optical, And Printing Properties Of A Lwc Gravure Coating, Lokendra Pal

Masters Theses

This study investigates the influence of modified clay- zeolite pigment on the viscoelastic, optical, and printing properties of a LWC coating. Currently, lightweight, coated papers have experienced problems with mottle, distortion, fiber puffing and poor print quality when printed with water-based inks. However, water-based inks represent a proven solution to reducing volatile organic compound (VOCs) emissions. Poor wetting and ink spreading on the paper surface constitute the majority of print quality issues associated with the water-based printing of LWC papers.

Similar problems are encountered during the printing of ink jet papers due to high percentage of water contained in these …

Assessment Of The Readiness Of Egyptian Companies To Implement Business Process Reengineering Programs, Hany Waguih Shoukry

Archived Theses and Dissertations

Business Process Reengineering (BPR) emerged as a performance improvement methodology in 1990. Its objective of radical process redesign to achieve dramatic performance improvements makes it a potential candidate to be applied in most Egyptian companies, especially in the Egyptian private sector that is struggling to upgrade its performance in the new global economy. Although the main problem of BPR is its high probability of failure, which is due to the failure of companies to fulfill all BPR prerequisites, very limited research exists on how to measure the readiness of a company to implement successful BPR programs. The current research addresses …

Assessment Of The Performance Of Shape Memory Alloys As Implant Devices, Noura Ali Al-Khalifi

Theses

Shape memory alloys are one class of the family of smart materials. They are considered as biomaterials, since they are well accepted by the human body. One special feature of shape memory alloys (SMA) is their ability to revert to their previous shape. This material is deformed at low temperature and when it is heated, it returns (remember) to its original form. Although, the implant binary NiTi SMA is particularly successful as a biomaterial, our NiTi SMA consist of more that 50% (55.7%) of nickel. The main purpose of this thesis was to evaluate the biological response of the shape …

Effects Of Implementation Of Decaborane Ions In Silicon, Cheng Li May 2003

Effects Of Implementation Of Decaborane Ions In Silicon, Cheng Li

Dissertations

The next generations of Si microelectronic devices will require ultra shallow p-type junctions formed by implantation of B ions with energies below 1 keV, at which available beam currents are severely limited by space charge effects. To solve this problem, decaborane (B10H14) cluster ion implantation has been suggested as an attractive alternative to conventional B implants, because one decaborane ion implants ten B atoms simultaneously and each of the B atoms only carries approximately 1/11 of the total ion energy. Thus the same implantation depth and dose as with monomer B ions can be obtained using …

Effects Of Diabetes And Aging On Posture And Acceleration Thresholds During Lateral Translations, Samantha Jean Richerson Apr 2003

Effects Of Diabetes And Aging On Posture And Acceleration Thresholds During Lateral Translations, Samantha Jean Richerson

Doctoral Dissertations

Research objectives. One source of falls in the elderly may be an inability to sufficiently adjust to transient postural perturbations or slips. Identifying useful predictors of fall potential, as well as factors that affect the ability of an individual to detect a movement of the standing support surface may provide insight into postural stability and methods to increase stability in elders. To do this, acceleration thresholds to short, precise, lateral platform translations and the resultant psychophysical responses of adults with early Type 2 diabetes to age-matched controls and young adults were measured.

Methods. Using an innovative SLIP-FALLS platform, …

Characterization And Corrosion Of Bcc-Tantalum Coating Deposited On Aluminum And Steel Substrate By Dc Magnetron Sputtering, Chirag Joshi Jan 2003

Characterization And Corrosion Of Bcc-Tantalum Coating Deposited On Aluminum And Steel Substrate By Dc Magnetron Sputtering, Chirag Joshi

Theses

Tantalum is one of the most versatile highly refractory corrosion-resistant metals. Tantalum coating can be used as an effective corrosion barrier if it is continuous, free from defects and it adheres well to the substrate. A DC magnetron sputtering technique was used to deposit tantalum on aluminum and steel. X-ray diffraction measurements revealed that the tantalum films produced by sputtering had two crystallographic structures: a body centered cubic α-phase and a metastable tetragonal β-phase. Tough and ductile alpha phase tantalum is preferred over the hard and brittle beta phase tantalum, as a protective coating. Alpha phase coatings were successfully deposited …

In Situ Laser Etch-Depth Monitoring Of The Deep Reactive Ion Etching Process, Yuki Imura Jan 2003

In Situ Laser Etch-Depth Monitoring Of The Deep Reactive Ion Etching Process, Yuki Imura

Theses

A laser-based method for measuring feature thickness during the deep reactive ion etching process is investigated. Interference occurs between laser beam reflections from the mask surface, the mask/silicon interface, and the exposed silicon surface of a process wafer. Information from this interference signal allows the etch process to be characterized. Three methods are investigated: laser-on-SiO2, laser-on-photoresist, and laser-on-both SiO2 and silicon at a mask edge.

The measured data from these experiments are found to be in good agreement with theoretical calculations. Differences in reflected beam amplitude and interference fringe frequency represent well the differences SiO2 and …

Reaction Control In Quiescent Systems Of Free-Radical Retrograde-Precipitation Polymerization, Vijaya Raghavan Tirumala Jan 2003

Reaction Control In Quiescent Systems Of Free-Radical Retrograde-Precipitation Polymerization, Vijaya Raghavan Tirumala

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

Free-radical retrograde-precipitation polymerization, FRRPP in short, is a novel polymerization process discovered by Dr. Gerard Caneba in the late 1980s. The current study is aimed at gaining a better understanding of the reaction mechanism of the FRRPP and its thermodynamically-driven features that are predominant in controlling the chain reaction.

A previously developed mathematical model to represent free radical polymerization kinetics was used to simulate a classic bulk polymerization system from the literature. Unlike other existing models, such a sparse-matrix-based representation allows one to explicitly accommodate the chain length dependent kinetic parameters.

Extrapolating from the past results, mixing was experimentally shown …

Chemical Bonding In Hard And Elastic Amorphous Carbon-Nitride Films, W. Jason Gammon Jan 2003

Chemical Bonding In Hard And Elastic Amorphous Carbon-Nitride Films, W. Jason Gammon

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

In this study, the chemical bonding in hard and elastic amorphous carbon nitride (a-CNx) films is investigated with x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and 15N, 13C, and 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. The films were deposited by DC Magnetron sputtering in a pure nitrogen discharge on Si(001) substrates at 300--400??C. Nanoindentation measurements reveal an elastic modulus of ∼50 GPa and a hardness of ∼5 GPa, thus confirming our films are highly elastic but resist plastic deformation.;Our 13C NMR study demonstrates the absence of sp 3-bonded carbon in this material. Collectively, our N(1s) XPS, 13C NMR, and 15N NMR data suggest …

Thermal Assessment Of Silicon-Based Composite Materials Used In Photovoltaics, Pavlos K. Bataglannis Jan 2003

Thermal Assessment Of Silicon-Based Composite Materials Used In Photovoltaics, Pavlos K. Bataglannis

Theses

Photovoltaics are devices that convert sunlight directly to electricity. It is well established that the conversion efficiency of mono and poly-crystalline silicon-based photovoltaic modules is inversely related to their temperature. Substantial improvements in operational performance can thus be achieved if the thermal energy accumulating in the material can be effectively dissipated.

Accurate modelling of modules would allow possible methods of thermal dissipation to be evaluated, and as a crucial component of the model, the thermal properties of the constituent materials of PV modules needed to be known. Special consideration needed to be given to the interfaces between dissimilar materials and …
