Measuring And Modeling Alachlor Dissipation In Soil , Dee Anna Jo Weed

Field and laboratory experiments evaluated the overall dissipation of alachlor (2-chloro-N-(2,6-diethylphenyl)-N-(methoxymethyl) acetamide) and the effect of no-till and chisel-plow tillages on alachlor leaching and dissipation. In the top 30-cm layer of field soil, the time to 50% dissipation (half-life) was 2 to 3 d, and the time to 90% dissipation ranged from 17 to 30 d. In no-till soil, alachlor dissipated slightly faster, and more was transported into the 10-to-30-cm soil layer. Mo[subscript]5 Si[subscript]3 shows promise as a high temperature creep resistant material. The high temperature oxidation resistance of Mo[subscript]5 Si[subscript]3 has been found to be poor, however, limiting its use in oxidizing atmospheres. Mo [subscript]5Si[subscript]3 exhibits mass loss during oxidation at 800°-1200° C due to volatilization of molybdenum oxide, indicating that the silica scale that forms does not provide a passivating layer. Theoretical calculations were performed for the propagation and interactions of particles having high atomic numbers and energy through diverse shield materials including polymeric materials and epoxy-bound lunar regolith by using transport codes for laboratory ion beams and the cosmic ray spectrum. Heavy ions fragment and lose energy upon interactions with shielding materials of specified elemental composition, density, and thickness. A fragmenting heavy iron ion produces hundreds of isotopes during nuclear reactions, which are treated in the solution of the transport problem used here.
