Semiconductor P-N Junction Space Charge Region Capacitance, Mohammad Humayun Habib Dec 1992

Semiconductor P-N Junction Space Charge Region Capacitance, Mohammad Humayun Habib

Dissertations and Theses

The classical capacitance voltage characteristics based on the depletion approximation, is adequate at reverse bias, but introduces errors at high forward bias. Because of its inherent simplicity and compactness this classical depletion model is well studied and widely used in circuit simulators. In this work, a new model for the semiconductor space charge region (SCR) capacitance, based on physical justification, will be derived. This new model takes three input parameters, C0 , Vbi and m, thus eliminating the fitting parameter FC currently used in SPICE. This new model is applicable for any applied voltage and will be compared with the …

The Use Of Laboratory Testing To Understand The Behavior Of Collapsible Soil Upon Wetting, Martha H. Denham Oct 1992

The Use Of Laboratory Testing To Understand The Behavior Of Collapsible Soil Upon Wetting, Martha H. Denham

Dissertations and Theses

In developing a constitutive model that could predict the settlement due to the collapse, several goals needed to be met. These were to gain an understanding of the collapse phenomenon, knowing the soil properties at the natural water content and how they change after collapse, and develop and test the new model. It was felt that laboratory testing could be of use. The types of test conducted included use of the Oedometer, Pressuremeter, and Triaxial tests. The material that was used for the testing was a "generic" soil manufactured out of diatomite. In all of the tests the soil was …

Minimization Of Exclusive Sum Of Products Expressions For Multiple-Valued Input Incompletely Specified Functions, Ning Song Aug 1992

Minimization Of Exclusive Sum Of Products Expressions For Multiple-Valued Input Incompletely Specified Functions, Ning Song

Dissertations and Theses

In recent years, there is an increased interest in the design of logic circuits which use EXOR gates. Particular interest is in the minimization of arbitrary Exclusive Sums Of Products (ESOPs). Functions realized by such circuits can have fewer gates, fewer connections, and take up less area in VLSI and especially, FPGA realizations. They are also easily testable. So far, the ESOPs are not as popular as their Sum of Products (SOP) counterparts. One of the main reasons it that the problem of the minimization of ESOP circuits was traditionally an extremely difficult one. Since exact solutions can be practically …

Applications Of Digital Signal Processing With Cardiac Pacemakers, Merry Thi Tran May 1992

Applications Of Digital Signal Processing With Cardiac Pacemakers, Merry Thi Tran

Dissertations and Theses

Because the voltage amplitude of a heart beat is small compared to the amplitude of exponential noise, pacemakers have difficulty registering the responding heart beat immediately after a pacing pulse. This thesis investigates use of digital filters, an inverse filter and a lowpass filter, to eliminate the effects of exponential noise following a pace pulse. The goal was to create a filter which makes recognition of a haversine wave less dependent on natural subsidence of exponential noise.

Research included the design of heart system, pacemaker, pulse generation, and sensor system simulations. The simulation model includes the following components:

  • Signal source, …

A New Approach To The Decomposition Of Incompletely Specified Functions Based On Graph Coloring And Local Transformation And Its Application To Fpga Mapping, Wei Wan May 1992

A New Approach To The Decomposition Of Incompletely Specified Functions Based On Graph Coloring And Local Transformation And Its Application To Fpga Mapping, Wei Wan

Dissertations and Theses

The thesis presents a new approach to the decomposition of incompletely specified functions and its application to FPGA (Field Programmable Gate Array) mapping. Five methods: Variable Partitioning, Graph Coloring, Bond Set Encoding, CLB Reusing and Local Transformation are developed in order to efficiently perform decomposition and FPGA (Lookup-Table based FPGA) mapping. 1) Variable Partitioning is a high quality hemistic method used to find the "best" partitions, avoiding the very time consuming testing of all possible decomposition charts, which is impractical when there are many input variables in the input function. 2) Graph Coloring is another high quality heuristic\ used to …

Effectiveness Of Additive Correction Multigrid In Numerical Heat Transfer Analysis When Implemented On An Intel Ipsc2, James D. Padgett May 1992

Effectiveness Of Additive Correction Multigrid In Numerical Heat Transfer Analysis When Implemented On An Intel Ipsc2, James D. Padgett

Dissertations and Theses

The effectiveness of the Additive Correction Multigrid (ACM) algorithm, a line-byline Tri-diagonal Matrix Algorithm (TDMA), and simple Gauss-Seidel (GS) iteration in numerical heat transfer analysis is investigated on a conventional single processor computer and on a distributed memory parallel computer. The performance of these methods is studied by solving a two-dimensional, steady heat conduction problem. The execution time of ACM on a single processor is proportional to the number of unknowns to the 1.5 power. This is in contrast to the execution time of the TDMA for which the execution time is proportional to the number of unknowns to the …

Mapping Programs To Parallel Architectures In The Real World, Dezheng Tang Mar 1992

Mapping Programs To Parallel Architectures In The Real World, Dezheng Tang

Dissertations and Theses

Mapping an application program to a parallel architecture can be described as a multidimensional optimization problem. To simplify the problem, we divide the overall mapping process into three sequential substeps: partitioning, allocating, and scheduling, with each step using a few details of the program and architecture description. Due to the difficulty in accurately describing the program and architecture and the fact that each substep uses incomplete information, inaccuracy is pervasive in the real-world mapping process. We hypothesize that the inaccuracy and the use of suboptimal, heuristic mapping methods may greatly affect the mapping or submapping performance and lead to a …

Developing Image Processing Tools In X Window System, Xin Zhang Jan 1992

Developing Image Processing Tools In X Window System, Xin Zhang

Dissertations and Theses

The X Window System is an industry-standard software system which facilitates programmers to develop portable graphical user interfaces. This thesis describes an image processing tool developed under the X Window System. A multiwindow image display software with image editing and improvement functions is developed. The software has four modules: environment generation, image creation, image editing and image improvement.

The environment generation module creates working windows, scrollbars, dialogbox and pulldown menu buttons, and tracks mouse cursor positions. The working windows are three adjacent windows allowing display of three different images simultaneously. The dialogbox provides an interface between the user and the …

Tapered Radio Frequency Transmission Lines, Vincent D. Matarrese Jan 1992

Tapered Radio Frequency Transmission Lines, Vincent D. Matarrese

Dissertations and Theses

A transformation used to obtain solutions for the beam parameter equation of fiber optics is applied to the second order differential equation for nonuniform transmission lines. Methods are developed for deriving possible transmission line tapers from known solutions of the transformed equation. This study begins with a comprehensive overview of previous work done to obtain closed-form solutions for the transmission line equations. Limitations of the lumped parameter model are also discussed. As part of this thesis, a tapered transmission line is constructed, based on one of the solutions obtained from the fiber optics studies. A discussion of the design and …

Spontaneous Coherent Pulsations In Standing-Wave Laser Oscillators : Stability Criteria, Pitak Chenkosol Jan 1992

Spontaneous Coherent Pulsations In Standing-Wave Laser Oscillators : Stability Criteria, Pitak Chenkosol

Dissertations and Theses

The stability criteria for single-mode standing-wave laser oscillators in the strongly homogeneously broadened limit are reported for the first time. Two types of stability criteria are presented. The first type, called type 1, corresponds to the minimum value of threshold parameter for which an infinitesimal perturbation away from steady state grows into an oscillatory solution. Another type of stability criteria, called type 2, corresponds to the minimum value of threshold parameter for which large amplitude oscillatory solutions do not decay to the steady state solution. Undamped pulsations in single mode strongly homogeneously broadened standing-wave laser oscillators are found to occur …

Improved Methodology For Limit States Finite Element Analysis Of Lattice Type Structures Using Nonlinear Post-Buckling Member Performance, Markus Ostendorp Jan 1992

Improved Methodology For Limit States Finite Element Analysis Of Lattice Type Structures Using Nonlinear Post-Buckling Member Performance, Markus Ostendorp

Dissertations and Theses

In an attempt to achieve more efficient designs, the technological frontier is pushed further and further. Every year science probes for a better understanding of natural phenomena, discovering new and improved methods to perform the same task more efficiently and with better results. One of the new technologies is the nonlinear analysis of structural systems using inelastic post-buckling member performance. Inelastic post-buckling member performance is defined as the constitutive relationship between axial load and displacement after the ultimate member capacity has been exceeded. A nonlinear analysis is able to predict the failure behavior of a structural system under ultimate loads …

Ignoring Interprocessor Communication During Scheduling, Chintamani M. Patwardhan Jan 1992

Ignoring Interprocessor Communication During Scheduling, Chintamani M. Patwardhan

Dissertations and Theses

The goal of parallel processing is to achieve high speed computing by partitioning a program into concurrent parts, assigning them in an efficient way to the available processors, scheduling the program and then executing the concurrent parts simultaneously. In the past researchers have combined the allocation of tasks in a program and scheduling of those tasks into one operation. We define scheduling as a process of efficiently assigning priorities to the already allocated tasks in a program. Assignment of priorities is important in cases when more than one task at a processor is ready for execution. Most heuristics for scheduling …

Parameter Uncertainty And Modeling Of Sludge Dewatering In One Dimension, Joseph H. Plaskett Jan 1992

Parameter Uncertainty And Modeling Of Sludge Dewatering In One Dimension, Joseph H. Plaskett

Dissertations and Theses

Separation of liquid from solids is a necessary step in the ultimate disposal of wastewater sludges. Most commonly, sludges are dewatered by pressure-filtration methods. Mathematical models of the physics of the sludge dewatering process would provide the ability to predict dewatering performance and optimize the design and operation of dewatering facilities.

Hypoid Gear Optimization, Selvaraj Ramachandran Jan 1992

A hypoid gear optimization procedure using the method of feasible directions has been developed. The objective is to reduce the gear set weight with bending strength, contact strength and facewidth-diametral pitch ratio as constraints. The objective function weight, is calculated from the geometric approximation of the volume of the gear and pinion. The design variables selected are number of gear teeth, diametral pitch, and facewidth. The input parameters for starting the initial design phase are power to be transmitted, speed, gear ratio, type of application, mounting condition, type of loading, and the material to be used. In the initial design …

Characterization Of Quantization Noise In Oversampled Analog To Digital Converters, Eric W. Multanen Jan 1992

Characterization Of Quantization Noise In Oversampled Analog To Digital Converters, Eric W. Multanen

Dissertations and Theses

The analog to digital converter (ADC) samples a continuous analog signal and produces a stream of digital words which approximate the analog signal. The conversion process introduces noise into the digital signal. In the case of an ideal ADC, where all noise sources are ignored, the noise due to the quantization process remains. The resolution of the ADC is defined by how many bits are in the digital output word. The amount of quantization noise is clearly related to the resolution of the ADC. Reducing the quantization noise results in higher effective resolution.

An Intelligent Database For Psubot, An Autonomous Wheelchair, Dieudonne Mayi Jan 1992

An Intelligent Database For Psubot, An Autonomous Wheelchair, Dieudonne Mayi

Dissertations and Theses

In the design of autonomous mobile robots, databases have been used mainly to store information on the environment in which the device is to operate. For most of the models and ready systems, the database when used, is not a stand alone component in the system, rather it is only intended to keep static information on the disposition and properties of objects on the map.

Performance Analysis Of Doa Estimation Algorithms Using Physical Parameters, Hui Liu

Dissertations and Theses

Analytical performance analysis on Direction-Of-Arrival (DOA) estimation algorithms has attracted much excellent research in recent years, various statistical properties have been revealed. However, in most of these analyses, insights of the performance were masked because of the involvement of singular values and singular vectors which depend on the character of the algorithms and data structures in a complex and nonlinear manner.

A Partitioning-Based Approach To The Fitting Problem In Special Architecture Eplds, Steffan Goller Jan 1992

A Partitioning-Based Approach To The Fitting Problem In Special Architecture Eplds, Steffan Goller

Dissertations and Theses

In this thesis, we describe an architecture-driven fitting algorithm for an Application-Specific EPLD, the CY7C361, from Cypress Semiconductor. Traditional placement and routing tools for PLDs perform placement and routing separately. Several placement possibilities are created and the router tries to realize the connections between the physical locations of the cells on the chip. The Cypress CY7C361 has a very unique chip architecture with a highly limited connectivity between the physical cells. Therefore, it is necessary to consider the mutability when the placement of cells is performed. The combination of the two stages is called fitting. The specific architecture-dependent constraints, imposed …

A New Method For Calculating The Economic Benefits Of Varying Degrees Of Power Factor Correction For Industrial Plant Loads, Mohammed Ishaque Jan 1992

A New Method For Calculating The Economic Benefits Of Varying Degrees Of Power Factor Correction For Industrial Plant Loads, Mohammed Ishaque

Dissertations and Theses

A comparative study of the economic benefits that can be obtained from different degrees of power factor correction for medium and small scale industrial installations is shown. A new approach for precise calculation of kws and kvars required at different power factors is presented. These calculated values are used to find the return on investments for the capacitors needed for power factor correction. The developed method is easy to use, cost effective, accurate and will help electrical engineers with minimum knowledge of power systems to precisely determine the savings available by improving the power factor of an industrial load.

Improved I/O Pad Positions Assignment Algorithm For Sea-Of-Gates Placement, Shyang-Kuen Her Jan 1992

Improved I/O Pad Positions Assignment Algorithm For Sea-Of-Gates Placement, Shyang-Kuen Her

Dissertations and Theses

A new heuristic method to improve the I/O pad assignment for the sea-of-gates placement algorithm "PROUD" is proposed. In PROUD, the preplaced I/O pads are used as the boundary conditions in solving sparse linear equations to obtain the optimal module placement. Due to the total wire length determined by the module positions is the strong function of the preplaced I/O pad positions, the optimization of the I/O pad circular order and their assignment to the physical locations on the chip are attempted in the thesis. The proposed I/O pad assignment program is used as a predecessor of PROUD. The results …

Multiplexed Pipelining : A Cost Effective Loop Transformation Technique, Satish Pai Jan 1992

Multiplexed Pipelining : A Cost Effective Loop Transformation Technique, Satish Pai

Dissertations and Theses

Parallel processing has gained increasing importance over the last few years. A key aim of parallel processing is to improve the execution times of scientific programs by mapping them to many processors. Loops form an important part of most computational programs and must be processed efficiently to get superior performance in terms of execution times. Important examples of such programs include graphics algorithms, matrix operations (which are used in signal processing and image processing applications), particle simulation, and other scientific applications. Pipelining uses overlapped parallelism to efficiently reduce execution time.
