Modeling And Evaluation Of Utility-Scale Microgrid Investment For Distribution System Planning, Ian Schomer Aug 2021

Modeling And Evaluation Of Utility-Scale Microgrid Investment For Distribution System Planning, Ian Schomer

Masters Theses

The electrical distribution network faces two great challenges for the immediate future. First, increased affordability of distributed energy resources (DERs)—and advancing control technologies of inverters that interface them to the grid—have driven a shift from a passive to an active distribution network (ADN), which heightens the complexity of system management. Second, the increased frequency of severe weather events and increased potential for a cybersecurity attack necessitate the need for a resilient infrastructure that can respond adaptively to shutdowns within the system. Microgrids (MGs) present a promising framework both to provide hierarchal control of DERs and to increase resiliency with grid-forming …

Development Of A Converter-Based Testing Platform And Battery Energy Storage System (Bess) Emulator For Microgrid Controller Function Evaluation, Dingrui Li May 2021

Development Of A Converter-Based Testing Platform And Battery Energy Storage System (Bess) Emulator For Microgrid Controller Function Evaluation, Dingrui Li

Masters Theses

The microgrid has attracted increasing research attention in the last two decades. Due to the development of renewable energy resources and power electronics technologies, the future microgrid will trend to be smarter and more complicated. The microgrid controller performs a critical role in the microgrid operation, which will also become more and more sophisticated to support the future microgrid. Before final field deployment and test, the evaluation and testing of the controller is an indispensable step in the controller development, which requires a proper testing platform.

However, existing simulation-based platforms have issues with potential numerical oscillation and may require huge …

Bond Graph Modeling Of Critical Infrastructures For Cyber-Physical Security Implementation, Michele Jane White Jan 2021

Bond Graph Modeling Of Critical Infrastructures For Cyber-Physical Security Implementation, Michele Jane White

Masters Theses

“In developed societies, there exists infrastructure vital to everyday life. This includes water and power systems. Technology is quickly evolving and being implemented on these utilities. This technology can range from smart metering in neighborhoods to volume sensors in local waste water treatment facilities. When networking, sensing, monitoring, or control devices are integrated with infrastructure it is considered a cyber physical system, or CPS. When information about an important physical system is connected to the virtual world, it is opened up to security risks. Cyber security can be provided to the CPS by monitoring the physical state of the system …

Practical Dwell Times For Switched System Stability With Smart Grid Application, William Roy St. Pierre Jan 2018

Practical Dwell Times For Switched System Stability With Smart Grid Application, William Roy St. Pierre

Masters Theses

"Switched systems are encountered throughout many engineering disciplines, but confirming their stability is a challenging task. Even if each subsystem is asymptotically stable, certain switching sequences may exist that drive the overall system states into unacceptable regions. This thesis contains a process that grants stability under switching to switched systems with multiple operating points. The method linearizes a switched system about its distinct operating points, and employs multiple Lyapunov functions to produce modal dwell times that yield stability. This approach prioritizes practicality and is designed to be useful for large systems with many states and subsystems due to its ease …

Micro-Grid Implementation Of A Rooftop Photovoltaic System, Pranav Nitin Godse Jan 2017

Micro-Grid Implementation Of A Rooftop Photovoltaic System, Pranav Nitin Godse

Masters Theses

"In recent years, solar power has been a popular form of renewable energy. This research conducts a cost analysis in implementing a rooftop photovoltaic system as part of an energy management schema for a university campus. The proposed system would be installed on the roof of one of the largest buildings on campus at Missouri University of Science and Technology, Toomey Hall; the objective function of the research involves reducing dependence on conventional energy sources on campus. Toomey Hall houses the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering (MAE) and is the largest academic unit on campus. Considering the vast expanse …

Managing Risks Of Market Price Uncertainty For A Microgrid Operation, Sriram Raghavan Jan 2016

Managing Risks Of Market Price Uncertainty For A Microgrid Operation, Sriram Raghavan

Masters Theses

"After deregulation of electricity in the United States, the day-ahead and real-time markets allow load serving entities and generation companies to bid and purchase/sell energy under the supervision of the independent system operator (ISO). The electricity market prices are inherently uncertain, and can be highly volatile. The main objective of this thesis is to hedge against the risk from the uncertainty of the market prices when purchasing/selling energy from/to the market. The energy manager can also schedule distributed generators (DGs) and storage of the microgrid to meet the demand, in addition to energy transactions from the market. The risk measure …

Optimal Techno-Economic Sizing Of Wind/Solar/Battery Hybrid Microgrid System Using The Forever Power Method, Sami Hamed Alalwani Jan 2015

Optimal Techno-Economic Sizing Of Wind/Solar/Battery Hybrid Microgrid System Using The Forever Power Method, Sami Hamed Alalwani

Masters Theses

"Advancement in power electronics, energy storage, control, and renewable energy sources has led to the use of integrated renewable energy sources in islanded microgrids (MG). Also, the uses of integrated renewable energy sources have become more technically applicable, more economically feasible, and more environmentally friendly than conventional sources. As a result, electrification of rural villages using renewable energy technologies has started to become widely adopted around the world. Since generating power from renewable energy sources is highly intermittent and difficult to predict, the use of proper energy storage technology is important to eliminate mismatches between the load demand and generation. …

Microgrid Modeling And Grid Interconnection Studies, Hira Amna Saleem May 2014

Microgrid Modeling And Grid Interconnection Studies, Hira Amna Saleem

Masters Theses

The demand for renewable energies and their integration to the grid has become more pressing than ever before due to the various reasons including increasing population energy demand, depleting fossil fuels, increasing atmospheric population, etc. Thus the vision of a sustainable future requires easy and reliable integration of renewable distributed generators to the grid. This master’s thesis studies the dynamics of distributed generators when they are connected with the main grid. Simulink MATLAB is used for the design and simulations of this system. Three distributed generators are used in this system: Photo-voltaic converter, Fuel cell and diesel generator. The control …

Hardware-In-Loop Evaluation Of Microgrid Protection Schemes, Kevin Michael Dowling May 2014

Hardware-In-Loop Evaluation Of Microgrid Protection Schemes, Kevin Michael Dowling

Masters Theses

Distributed energy resources are becoming more common in distribution systems. Higher energy prices and increased interest in alternative energy sources are two of the driving forces behind this trend. Local utilities, however, anticipate very serious distribution system protection problems resulting from high penetration of these resources.

The microgrid concept has been proposed as a possible solution to integrating distributed energy resources without adversely impacting the distribution system. Protection schemes have been proposed to work within this microgrid structure, but very little testing with real hardware is available. Without a practical solution for microgrid protection, backed by extensive studies, microgrids are …
