The Development Of An Inventory Control Procedure For Low Usage Maintenance Spare Parts, Asa L. Whitaker Jr. Aug 1972

The Development Of An Inventory Control Procedure For Low Usage Maintenance Spare Parts, Asa L. Whitaker Jr.

Masters Theses

This analysis was made in an attempt to establish an inventory control procedure which would be applicable for low wage maintenance spare parts. Spare parts inventories are unique in industry since they are maintained as insurance stock to provide protection against the inability to procure a part readily when it is needed for a repair.· Due to this characteristic, the demand for these items is low and unpredictable; therefore, classical inventory models are not applicable. More sophisticated approaches have been developed to take these characteristics into account; however, these approaches require assumptions to be made which may not hold true …

Analysis Of A Complementary Amplifier Useful For High Slew Rate Applications, Dick Ray Fletcher Mar 1972

Analysis Of A Complementary Amplifier Useful For High Slew Rate Applications, Dick Ray Fletcher

Masters Theses

Operational amplifiers which are utilized in applications involving the amplification of high-frequency signals and for fast rise-time pulses must have a high slew rate and a wide bandwidth. Integrated circuit, particularly thin-film hybrid, amplifiers with wide bandwidths can be readily obtained; however, monolithic IC's are not readily available with as large a slew rate as can be obtained with discrete-device amplifiers.

The goal of this thesis was to investigate the design of an amplifier using a complementary output stage with the objectives of obtaining low quiescent power dissipation, a slew rate equivalent to the small-signal bandwidth of the amplifier, and …

A Study Of Fmfb Demodulator Operation In The Presence Of Radio Frequency Interference And Gaussian Noise, Terry D. Wormington Jan 1972

A Study Of Fmfb Demodulator Operation In The Presence Of Radio Frequency Interference And Gaussian Noise, Terry D. Wormington

Masters Theses

"A digital computer model of an FMFB demodulator has been used to study the effects of radio frequency interference on the detection of a sinusoidally modulated carrier. The effectiveness of selecting the feedback factor to suppress the interference for three values of modulation index is investigated. Also, the required IF bandwidth for the minimization of the mean-square error of the loop output between a signal corrupted by interference and the same signal without interference was investigated. More work is required before the effects of Gaussian noise plus interference on loop operation can be ascertained"--Abstract, page ii.

Preliminary Studies With A Variable Transfer Composite Polymer Membrane., Samuel Walter Dortch

Masters Theses

"A preliminary study was done to determine the feasibility of using a compressed fibrous teflon (PTFE) silicone polymer membrane in extracorporeal oxygenation devices. A series of composite membranes were fabricated, using different concentrations of a dimethyl silicone polymer dissolved in petroleum ether, to give membranes having variable oxygen transfer properties. A gas-gas system was chosen to obtain the necessary transfer data. Data were obtained by transferring pure oxygen through the membranes into a mixture of 47 mole percent oxygen and 53 mole percent carbon dioxide. All analyses were obtained by chromatographic techniques. The results of these experiments show that membranes …

A Study Of Plane Wave Filter Analysis With Flow, Thomas Valle Huber

Masters Theses

"The purpose of this investigation is to determine the effect of slow steady flow on the reflection and transmission characteristics of acoustic filters.

A standing wave tube and transmission tube apparatus, designed and built by a previous investigator, was modified to accept slow steady flow. Reflection characteristics were determined from measurements made on the inlet side of the filters investigated. These data along with measurements taken with the transmission tube apparatus were used to determine transmission characteristics. The calculations were simplified by terminating the filters anechoically. The filters used in this investigation were an expansion chamber, an automobile type muffler …

Masters Theses

"This study analyzes the effect of inlet pressures, internal turbine efficiencies, pump efficiencies, extraction pressures and number of open feedwater heaters on the thermal efficiency of regenerative steam power cycles. Combinations of inlet and extraction pressures were introduced into digital computer programs in order to find the optimum extraction pressures for maximum thermal efficiency. The scope of study covered regenerative steam cycles with one, two, three, four, and five open feedwater heaters. One of the principle objectives of the study was to determine if there is some turbine extraction pressure or set of pressures which give maximum thermal efficiency for …

The Analysis Of An Axially Symmetric Submerged Membrane Shell, Walter Earl Wehmeyer Jan 1972

The Analysis Of An Axially Symmetric Submerged Membrane Shell, Walter Earl Wehmeyer

Masters Theses

"The general theory of large elastic deformations is applied to the problem of a liquid-filled, axisymmetric membrane which is supported on a rigid horizontal plane and subjected to a variable external pressure. The variable external pressure is caused by submerging the membrane to various depths. The variation of the hydrostatic pressure in the inflating medium as well as in the surrounding environment is considered. By assuming large meridional deformations the stress field and the deformed shapes of a submerged membrane made of a neo-Hookean material are obtained. The effect of the initial shape on the deformed configuration of the membrane …

Computer-Aided Circuit Optimization Including The Adjoint Method Of Calculating Network Sensitivities, John Walter Olson Jan 1972

Computer-Aided Circuit Optimization Including The Adjoint Method Of Calculating Network Sensitivities, John Walter Olson

Masters Theses

"A complete discuss ion of the optimization of a circuit, including modeling and programming difficulties encountered, is presented. A three transistor bandpass filter is used in order to study various methods of optimization. The adjoint method of calculating the network error gradient vector is compared to the perturbation method. The adjoint method proves to have decided advantages over the other method. A generalized computer program is presented to carry out the Fletcher-Powell optimization algorithm with specialized subroutines which include a network equation solver and both methods of finding the gradient vector. The program proved very effective in realizing a desired …

A Tensi-Volumetric Apparatus: Theory, Calibration, And Use In An Investigation Of The Oxygen Non-Stoichiometry Of Pure Batio₃, Glenn Jon Conger

Masters Theses

"The development of the tensi-volumetric apparatus has been traced to its current position of significance in studies relating to oxide non-stoichiometry. Components of the tensi-volumetric apparatus, especially the capacitance membrane manometer, were examined in detail as were the parameters affecting the performance of such an apparatus. Based on a careful consideration of components and performance, a tensi-volumetric apparatus has been designed, built, and its operation theoretically justified for its particular physical configuration. Results of existing studies of the oxygen non-stoichiometry of barium titanate have been used to predict its behavior during a tensi-volumetric study. Specific analytical procedures developed for use …

Experimental Studies Of Supporting Wire Disturbances In The Near Viscous Wakes Of Slender Supersonic Bodies, Kenneth Anthony Mirly

Masters Theses

"Wires have often been used as a means of mechanically supporting a model so that its wake will be relatively free of support interference. Such support systems have many advantages over stings and are less costly than magnetic suspension systems. Investigations into the disturbances caused by these supporting wires have been carried out with the use of a two-dimensional flat plate and a wire supported slender cone. The tests were conducted in the University of Missouri-Rolla axisymmetric, supersonic wind tunnel at Mach 3.15, and at a Reynolds number of 2.14 X 10⁶ per inch. Schlieren photography, pitot and static pressure …

Design And Analysis Of A Phase-Locked Loop Suitable For Synchronization Of An Optical Receiver, Douglas Wayne Dreisewerd Jan 1972

Design And Analysis Of A Phase-Locked Loop Suitable For Synchronization Of An Optical Receiver, Douglas Wayne Dreisewerd

Masters Theses

"The required synchronization of a dynamic crossed-field photomultiplier tube (DCFP) is accomplished by means of a phase-locked loop for which the salient feature is the use of the DCFP as the phase detector. This action is necessitated due to the unique sampling and phase focusing type of operation of the DCFP. The phase-locked loop is implemented by dithering the phase of the synchronizing RF drive signal, bandpass filtering the output pulses of the DCFP and using a synchronous detector at the dither frequency to determine the phase relationship between the incoming mode-locked laser pulses and the RF drive signal. The …

A Study Of Three Methods Which Solve A Suboptimum Control Problem On An Iterative Analog Computer, Joseph Camp Finney

Masters Theses

"Three methods for optimizing a proportional and a proportional-integral controller parameter problem were investigated on an iterative analog computer. The three methods were the parameter-perturbation correlation method, the absolute biasing method, and the variable step size method. The process controlled was third order linear. The performance function used to judge the quality of the controller was the time integral of the absolute value of error. All three methods required a trial and error adjustment of the parameters used in these methods. The optimum solution was obtained by all methods. The absolute biasing method, for both the proportional and the proportional-integral …

There was no correlation …

Application Of Transmission Matrices To Describe Transverse Vibrations Of Non-Uniform Bernoulli-Euler Beams, Dean Irle Parker Jan 1972

Application Of Transmission Matrices To Describe Transverse Vibrations Of Non-Uniform Bernoulli-Euler Beams, Dean Irle Parker

Masters Theses

"This report investigates the application of transmission Matrices to determine natural frequencies of non-uniform Bernoulli-Euler beams. The classes of non-uniform beams considered includes: truncated wedges, truncated cones, and truncated rectangular pyramids. Two transmission matrices were derived from solutions to the Bernoulli-Euler equation. One was an exact closed form solution which was applicable for the above classes of beams excluding uniform and nearly uniform beams. The second solution was an approximate one limited to the use for nearly uniform beams, but which does give the correct solution to the uniform beam in the limiting case. The transmission matrix has two advantages: …

A Practical Approach To The Exhaust Silencing Of A Pneumatic Rock Drill, Morton Gary Barth Jan 1972

A Practical Approach To The Exhaust Silencing Of A Pneumatic Rock Drill, Morton Gary Barth

Masters Theses

"One-third octave spectrum analyses of the exhaust noise produced by a medium sized pneumatic rock drill were obtained during free recriprocation to determine the most troublesome bands of noise. Noise reduction techniques were then used to design exhaust mufflers which would reduce the level of the exhaust noise to an acceptable level with a minimum increase in back pressure. The prototype mufflers evaluated included an expansion chamber, a resonator, and various modified expansion chambers. One of the modified expansion chambers tested provided very good attenuation reducing the exhaust noise from 113 dBA to 87 dBA at the operator's ear position. …

Measurement Of Turbulence In An Annular Jet, George Philip Jan 1972

Measurement Of Turbulence In An Annular Jet, George Philip

Masters Theses

"An experimental investigation was conducted for an annular jet which consisted of a circular jet and a concentric wake. The annular air jet mixed with quiescent atmospheric air. The jet velocity was kept constant at 137.0 feet per second which corresponds to a Reynolds Number of 73,200. Using the technique of hot-wire anemometry, mean velocities, turbulence intensities and Reynolds stresses were measured in the longitudinal and lateral directions. Two distinct flow regimes, the free stream jet regime and the diffusing jet regime, are observed. In the free stream jet regime, higher turbulence intensity and shear stress occur in the inner …

On The Complex Index Of Refraction For Liquids, Juan Guillermo Ochoa Sierra Jan 1972

On The Complex Index Of Refraction For Liquids, Juan Guillermo Ochoa Sierra

Masters Theses

"Methods for determining the optical constants, the real and the imaginary part of the complex index of refraction, for weakly and strongly absorbing liquids are reviewed and evaluated. Both reflection and transmission methods were considered and preliminary steps are taken for determining the optical constants for both water and oil in the visible region (0.45 - 0.65 microns) of the spectrum. A low resolution spectrometer was used and the transmission measurements through fuel oil, number 1 through 6, and crude oil were performed. The imaginary part of the complex index of refraction was deduced from the above measurements and appears …

The Electric Field Strength Dependence Of Neutron-Induced Defects In Silicon P-N Junctions, Paul Edward Johnson Jan 1972

The Electric Field Strength Dependence Of Neutron-Induced Defects In Silicon P-N Junctions, Paul Edward Johnson

Masters Theses

"The effect of high electric field strengths (10⁴ to 10⁵ V/cm) present during neutron radiation on the neutron-induced defects is determined by utilizing the high electric field strength inherent in the emitter-base transistion region of an n-p-n transistor. A method is presented for the separation of neutron and gamma effects. Previous theoretical work on the ratio of base current increase to collector current decrease is applied to experimental data. The variations of the space-charge region volume damage introduction rate with neutron fluence and the average electric field strength are determined experimentally in order to obtain a measure of this effect. …

Computer Simulation Of The Primary Recoil Spectra And Damage Cross Section Of Fe₃Al Using Endf/B Ii Data, Daniel Willard Smith

Masters Theses

"A computer program, using Evaluated Nuclear Data File (ENDF/B II) information, was used to develop energy-exchange kernels which delineate the energy transfer probabilities between neutrons and Fe3Al lattice atoms. The kernels combine all available information on elastic and inelastic scattering contained in the ENDF/B II data.

The computer program used to generate the primary recoil spectra is SAKI, a modified version of RICE (1). SAKI is designed to calculate energy-exchange probabilities in any binary alloy as well as damage cross sections and optimum cutoff energies for use in comparing displacement effects in different reactor spectra."--Abstract, page ii.

A Study Of The Effect Of Drilled Holes On The Concentration Of Elastic Stresses Around A Notch, Glenn Michael Kmecz Jan 1972

A Study Of The Effect Of Drilled Holes On The Concentration Of Elastic Stresses Around A Notch, Glenn Michael Kmecz

Masters Theses

"Hole drilling as a method for improving the toughness of notch weakened tensile specimens is investigated by means of a photoelastic technique. Tests were performed on 20%, 40%, 60%, and 80% notch depth specimens machined from PSM-1 photoelastic material. The basic criteria for success was no increase in the elastic stress concentration factor. The photoelastic results were verified by a finite element stress analysis of the 60% notch depth specimens. Comparison of the experimental and numerical results provide conclusive proof that no increase in the elastic stress concentration factor occurs when proper positioning of the drilled holes is accomplished"--Abstract, page …
