In this study, the impact of thermal hydrolysis pretreatment (THP) on the mono- and co-digestion of thickened waste activated sludge (TWAS) and food waste (FW) was carried out at temperatures of 150, 170, 190, and 210 ˚C for a contact time of 30 min and mixing ratios of 90:10, 70:30, and 50:50 on a volumetric basis in batch anaerobic tests. Thermal hydrolysis influenced the solubilization of the particulate organic constituents of TWAS, reduction in volatile suspended solids (VSS) and particle size with the increase in temperature to 210 ˚C, achieving a reduction in VSS up to 62% and a reduction …

Coal mining activities can leave an extensive network of abandoned underground workings that gradually flood after operations cease. This rising mine water, with low pH and high sulfate, acidity, and metals can lead to uncontrolled releases of harmful acid mine drainage to the environment. In this study, the impacts of climate and land cover (LC) changes on the hydrologic processes of the Batchawana watershed in Central Ontario are assessed. Batchawana is a snow-dominated forested watershed with coniferous, deciduous and mixed trees and numerous small lakes. A semi-distributed hydrological model, based on the Raven hydrological framework, is calibrated and validated using ground-based observations for 1981-2001 and 2002-2011, respectively. Pyrolysis and activation were used in this thesis to produce biochar and activated carbon from industrial digestate and hydrochar materials. In the first part of thesis, digestate derived biochars were obtained by varying the pyrolysis heating rate (10, 80, 100, 200, >1000 °C·min-1) and temperature (300 to 600 °C) to modify their soil-related characteristics (i.e., nutrient leachability, carbon stability, and heavy metal adsorptive capacity). Cellulose from toilet paper is a significant fraction of particulate organics, which is recoverable. For the first time, comprehensive mapping and tracking the fate of cellulose across various unit processes at full-scale in two water resource recovery facilities located in North America and Europe was undertaken. The influent cellulose content accounted for approximately one-third of the total suspended solids (TSS). More than 80% of the raw wastewater cellulose was captured in primary treatment. The high cellulose content of the primary sludge accounting for 17%-35% of the TSS facilitates cellulose recovery. Bioretention systems are low impact development stormwater management features designed to remove pollutants, including phosphorus (P), from urban stormwater runoff. In this study, two field-scale bioretention systems installed in London, Ontario, Canada were monitored to develop detailed understanding of P behaviour and the hydro-biogeochemical mechanisms that govern overall P retention. The tornadoes can be devastating to structures and infrastructure systems. They can cause fatalities and economic losses. In this thesis, the tornado hazard for Canada is systematically assessed. The use of three spatial point processes (i.e., Poisson, zero-inflated Poisson, and negative binomial models) are first investigated in a hierarchical structure to predict the tornado occurrence rate by considering the annual cloud-to-ground lightning flash density and annual thunderstorm days as covariates. Freshwater systems worldwide are threatened by excessive nutrient (nitrogen and phosphorus) loading. This study evaluated the contribution of septic systems to stream nutrient loads in nine subwatersheds. Stream sampling was conducted during low and high discharge conditions, with samples analyzed for total phosphorus (TP), soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP), nitrate (NO3-N), and acesulfame (ACE; wastewater tracer). Higher septic effluent reached the subwatershed outlets during high discharge conditions. Subwatersheds with newer households had a lower percentage of septic effluent reaching the stream compared with subwatersheds with older households. Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are emerging contaminants, ubiquitous in the environment, and are challenging to remediate. Self-sustaining Treatment for Active Remediation (STAR) destroys organic contaminants embedded in porous media using smouldering combustion. Self-sustaining smouldering conditions allow the reaction to propagate through the contaminated media without external energy. This study explored STAR as a remediation option for PFAS-impacted granular activated carbon (GAC) and PFAS-contaminated soil. Smouldering remediation is a promising technique for destroying organic contaminants in soil. Forced airflow is vital to supporting the smouldering reaction and to propagate it through the contaminated zone. This research focuses on investigating the effects of permeability heterogeneity on smouldering. A series of unique column experiments, combined with numerical model simulations, were conducted. The results suggest that smouldering can successfully propagate through layers in series despite more than a 1000:1 permeability contrast. Through this combined approach of high rate acidification, and co-digestion techniques it was found that the experimental modeling scenarios offered increases when compared to the existing base scenario production levels. Changes in the regional characteristics of temperature and precipitation can intensify the occurrence and severity of extreme events such as rain-on-snow induced flooding, droughts and wildfires. Analyzing these climate variables in isolation without considering their interdependencies might result in severe underestimation of their combined effects. In this study, copula functions are used to describe the joint behaviour of temperature and precipitation across Canada over a historical period of 1910-present using observations and further till the end of the 21st century using three large ensembles of regional climate models.
