Hydrogen Production Via Photocatalytic Water Splitting Under Near-Uv And Visible Light Using Doped Pd Tio2, Bianca Rusinque Aug 2021

Hydrogen Production Via Photocatalytic Water Splitting Under Near-Uv And Visible Light Using Doped Pd Tio2, Bianca Rusinque

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

The present PhD thesis reports the modification of titanium dioxide (TiO2) with palladium (Pd), to enhance hydrogen production via water splitting, using 2.0v/v% ethanol as a scavenger. Titanium dioxide was used as photocatalyst, given its ability to absorb photons, producing e-/h+ pairs. Mesoporous TiO2 was synthesized using a soft template, following the sol-gel method, to modify its morphological properties. Palladium was used as co-catalyst doping TiO2 agent, narrowing the band gaps down to 2.51 eV, and creating additional active metal sites.

Water splitting experiments under near-UV and visible light irradiation were carried out …

Hydrogen Production By Photocatalytic Water Splitting Under Near-Uv And Visible Light Using Doped Pt And Pd Tio2, Bianca Rusinque Sep 2018

Hydrogen Production By Photocatalytic Water Splitting Under Near-Uv And Visible Light Using Doped Pt And Pd Tio2, Bianca Rusinque

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Photocatalysis is a promising methodology for hydrogen production. It involves the use of an unlimited source of energy, sunlight, and a semiconductor material to split water with zero carbon emissions.

This Master’s thesis reports high efficiencies in terms of hydrogen production via water splitting using 2.0v/v% ethanol as scavenger, platinum and palladium as noble metals on TiO2 photocatalysts at three metal loadings (1.0, 2.5 and 5.0wt%). Both near UV and visible light were used in the studies developed. These photocatalysts were synthetized using a sol-gel method whose morphological properties were enhanced due to the presence of soft template precursors. …

Photocatalytic Hydrogen Production Using A Mesoporous Tio2 Doped With Pt: Semiconductor Synthesis, Oxidation-Reduction Network And Quantum Efficiencies., Jesus Fabricio Guayaquil-Sosa Jan 2018

Photocatalytic Hydrogen Production Using A Mesoporous Tio2 Doped With Pt: Semiconductor Synthesis, Oxidation-Reduction Network And Quantum Efficiencies., Jesus Fabricio Guayaquil-Sosa

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

The present PhD dissertation establishes that hydrogen can be produced using mesoporous TiO2 as a photocatalyst, doped with platinum atoms (Pt), in a slurry medium, under near-UV irradiation and with ethanol as a sacrificial reagent (scavenger). These mesoporous TiO2 photocatalysts were prepared using a sol-gel method. The mesoporous Pt-TiO2 photocatalyst displayed a reduced 2.34 eV band gap compared to the bare TiO2 (3.20 eV).

Photocatalytic hydrogen production experiments were performed in a Photo-CREC Water II Reactor (PCW-II Reactor). This novel unit provides both radial and axial symmetrical irradiation profiles. Furthermore, macroscopic energy balances developed in this …

Photoactive Properties Of Nanostructured Titania Modified Polyurethanes, Chao Chen Apr 2017

Photoactive Properties Of Nanostructured Titania Modified Polyurethanes, Chao Chen

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

In order to enhance both the photoactivity and physical/mechanical properties of titania/polyurethane (PU) nanocomposites, in-situ polymerization and film casting were investigated. Both self-degrading PU foams and self-cleaning PU coatings were prepared. Functional monomers were prepared usingDMPA (2,2-dimethylolpropionic acid) functionalized anatse TiO2 and P25 for integration into polyurethane foam with a "grafting-from" synthetic method. This technique was found to successfully reduce the agglomeration effect of titania nanoparticles inside the foams. In addition, the photodegradation rate was enhanced by > 120% over unmodified foam at an optimized loading of 3wt% DMPA functionalized anatase TiO2. The presence of DMPA functionalized P25 …

Solar Photocatalytic Reduction Of Zn2+ Using Graphene-Based Tio2 Composite Catalyst For Application To Cso Treatment, Gloria Kumordzi Apr 2015

Solar Photocatalytic Reduction Of Zn2+ Using Graphene-Based Tio2 Composite Catalyst For Application To Cso Treatment, Gloria Kumordzi

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

The improvement of photocatalyst efficiency in utilizing the majority of wavelengths in the solar spectrum, an abundant natural resource, presents the next step in the large scale application of photocatalysis for the treatment of dissolved organic and inorganic pollutants in wastewater. In this study, a composite catalyst of TiO2 and Graphene synthesized by a hydrothermal treatment method is used to photo-reduce Zn2+, the most abundant heavy metal found in combined sewer overflows (CSOs). The performance of this composite catalyst was assessed under various process conditions such as pH, light intensity, catalyst loading and light source. The TiO …

A Comprehensive Study Of Cd(Ii) Removal From Aqueous Solution Via Adsorption And Solar Photocatalysis, Samindika Athapaththu Dec 2013

A Comprehensive Study Of Cd(Ii) Removal From Aqueous Solution Via Adsorption And Solar Photocatalysis, Samindika Athapaththu

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

As the increase in industrial technology continue to progress, it results in the increase in heavy metal pollution, creating harmful effects on humans, plants, and animals. Since toxic metals do not degrade easily, they accumulate over time, posing greater danger to living organisms. Removal of these heavy metals is therefore, of great importance. Though many research studies successfully utilized UV photocatalysis with TiO2 catalyst for the removal of Cd2+, none have performed the photoreduction of Cd2+ under visible light using eosin-y dye-sensitized TiO2. The objective of the present research is to study the photocatalytic …

Nano Tio2/Graphene Composites For Photovoltaic And Photocatalytic Materials, Nasrin Farhangi Sep 2012

Nano Tio2/Graphene Composites For Photovoltaic And Photocatalytic Materials, Nasrin Farhangi

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Graphene has been recognized as one of the most exciting carbon based materials of the present decade due to its unique electronic, mechanical and thermal properties. High surface area exfoliated graphene sheets with controllable surface functionality is an attractive two-dimensional surface for attaching different metals and semiconductors for improving the performance of catalysts, sensors, photoelectronic and energy conversion devices. Graphene is an ideal material which can be used for improving various metal oxide properties such as those of titania (TiO2). TiO2/graphene composites have shown excellent properties compared to bare TiO2 in various applications. In high …

Solar And Visible Light Driven Photocatalysis For Sacrificial Hydrogen Generation And Water Detoxification With Chemically Modified Ti02, Pankaj Chowdhury

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Photocatalysis is a recognized approach where light energy is employed to excite the semiconductor material producing electron/hole pair which eventually involves in the detoxification of pollutants and/or water splitting producing hydrogen. Existing photocatalysts suffer from poor activity or no activity in visible light irradiation which restricts them from solar light utilization. This work is focused on two key applications of photocatalysis (i) sacrificial hydrogen generation, and (ii) phenol degradation in visible and/or solar light. Platinum was loaded on TiO2 photocatalyst by solar photo-deposition method. Eosin Y dye was used as a sensitizer for sensitization of platinum loaded TiO2 …
