Additive Manufacturing Of Composites For Sensing And Harsh Environments Application, Md Sahid Hassan
Additive Manufacturing Of Composites For Sensing And Harsh Environments Application, Md Sahid Hassan
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Composite materials are made by combining two or more materials, such as fibers and resins to create a material system that has improved mechanical and physical properties compared to its individual components. The use of 3D printing technology in composite manufacturing allows for the creation of complex and custom shapes with precise control over the placement of the materials. This makes it possible to create composite parts with enhanced performance characteristics and reduced weight. The work presented in this dissertation lies in the design and development of highly flexible impact propagation sensor through material extrusion 3D printing technique. By using …

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death in the US, with approximately 859,000 deaths each year. The major contributor to CVD is Acute Myocardial Infarction (AMI), which causes the death of approximately 25% of the cardiomyocytes present in the left ventricle of the heart. After AMI, the adult human heart has a very limited regenerative capacity. Moreover, the electrical propagation of the myocardium is severely disrupted, making the heart more susceptible to failure and patient death. However, current pharmacological treatments do not address the loss of cardiomyocytes and the disruption of electrical propagation in the heart. Tissue engineering …

The advancement in technology has brought forward non-conventional manufacturing methods that are efficient and advantageous for specific applications. 3D printing is one such outcome, whose applications stretch from biomedical applications to daily products. 3D printing is a rapidly growing technology, and innovative research developments have proven versatility in creating physical objects. Simplification and constant improvement in Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) operation result from decades of research. However, 3D printing is material-specific and contributes to shortcomings in the technology. The build-material dictates the extrusion parameters, including the material discharge rate and head speed for a continuous flow. Customization being the prime …
Synthesis And Characterization Of Material Systems For 3d Printed Smart Structures, Hilda Fontes
Synthesis And Characterization Of Material Systems For 3d Printed Smart Structures, Hilda Fontes

The silica hollow spheres have demonstrated excellent results in multiple applications such as light-weight composites, and optical applications as a glass coating. This material also exhibits excellent thermal, shock impact, and hydrophilic properties extremely useful for industrial applications. However, a controllable size of the particle is desired to further increase the number of applications of the silica hollow spheres.
This Thesis aims a method to fabricate silica hollow spheres in a single step with a controlled diameter size. A study was developed to demonstrate the particle size change when adjusting the molecular weight of the medium by using different alcohol …

Shape memory polymers (SMPs) are classified as smart materials due to their inherent stimulus-induced response. SMP is capable of recovering its original shape from a high degree of deformation by applying an external stimulus such as thermal energy. Other stimuli are electricity, light, chemical, and magnetic field. Shape memory polymers (SMPs) and its fabrication process has recently attracted much attention as a result of their potential application as soft active materials. Demonstration of SMP systems fabricated via 3D printing technologies has been one of the most popular attempts. This Dissertation presents an integration of two commercial SMP materials (DiAPLEX and …

On Demand 3d Printed Hybrid Scaffolds For Tissue Engineering Applications, Ivan D. Hernandez
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
A composite 3D printed polymer scaffold with inbuilt porosity and filled with a hydrogel can provide an ideal support system for cell growth, proliferation, and vascularization. Therefore, a hybrid system of 3D printed polycaprolactone (PCL) scaffold and a hydroxyapatite-based hydrogel was developed for application in the reconstruction of bone defects, which are inherently difficult to repair without any guided therapies. In the present study, a 3D printed gyroid structure of PCL allowed the loading of a higher amount of hydrogel as compared to conventionally used 3D printed mesh structure of the same volume and strut thickness. The hydrogel was composed …

In this work, co-planar waveguides (CPW) are fabricated and characterized with low temperature 3D printed materials for flexible electronic applications. Laser processing is introduced to reduce heating and cooling times for curing and subtractive manufacturing. CPWs are optimized by varying printing resolution, adjusting curing conditions and shaping conductor profile with a pico-laser. By using acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) as substrate material and Dupont CB028 as conductive material, a high S21 and low S11 CPW is fabricated. Optimized direct write methods are dispensed onto 3D complex structures to move away from 2.5D style printing and move into true 3D printed antenna …

This project is a focus on characterizing the process for actualizing three dimensional structures out of a carbon nanostructure composite via a direct print additive manufacturing process. Manufacturing parts additively enables for realization of geometrically complex shapes that often times cannot be manufactured any other way. The specificity of a material's properties have to be such, that the processing method can precisely place and bond material to itself in a highly repeatable manner. Commercial materials for additive manufacturing are have been optimized with these goals in mind and, therefore, often times lack the rigor and robustness for many applications.

The recent advancement in 3D printing has created a new way to design electronics and electromagnetic devices. This allows for a new breed of non-planar designs to be used, fully exploiting all three dimensions like never before. More functions can be fit into the same amount of space, products with novel form factors can be more easily manufactured, interconnects can be routed more smoothly, interfaces can be better implemented, electrical and mechanical functions can be comingled, and entirely new device paradigms will be invented. When departing from traditional planar topologies many new problems arise like signal integrity, crosstalk, noise, and …
