The purpose of this paper is to undertake a survey of state of the art high speed bipolar bit slice microprocessor elements. Three systems are discussed: The 2900 microprocessor family; the 10800 microprocessor family and the 8X02 microcontroller. A description of the microprocessor and microprogram controller elements for each family is presented and an example of the 2900 family is discussed.

Several alternate systems for use in implementing the 911 emergency system in Orange County, Florida were investigated. The proposed systems were compared with the already existing systems on the basis of reliability, response time, and cost. System reliability was the prime consideration of the study. Flow charts of each system were formulated in order to determine the functions required of equipment and humans. The reliability was then determined by examining the difficulty of the tasks that each was required to perform. Reliability models of the present and proposed systems were constructed. This paper presents the background and procedures leading to development of a simulation model to analyze the impact of certain decision variables on operational system performance and workloads as the repair facility of a typical Navy field site. The research examines the impact of maintenance support concepts, as implemented by changes in the decision variables, associated with the broader application of Automatic Test Equipment. This thesis describes a method of transforming a deconvolution problem into an equivalent convolution problem. A short discussion of the theory behind convolution and deconvolution is included, along with a survey of techniques now being used. A new method using a synthesized compensator is proposed and mathematically developed. Finally, the results of applying this method to several real and analytical signals are given.

This thesis discusses the dispersion of optical pulses in fiber waveguides. Procedures for determining the transfer function of an optical fiber using either time domain measurements or frequency domain measurements are given. A test set is described which uses time domain measurements for dispersion characterization. Complex transfer function data are presented for various fiber lengths as well as optical connectors. Prediction of bandwidths of long fibers from bandwidth/measurements taken on shorter length fibers is discussed. A relation between the bandwidth of cascaded connectors in terms of the bandwidth of a single connector is obtained.

When a filter transfer function in s is replaced with the bilinear transform in z, the resulting discrete model represents the original continuous model within a second order accuracy of integration. A unique set of recently discovered minimum memory algorithms that perform the bilinear transform on a continuous transfer function are implemented on an INTEL 8080 microprocessor system. Scaling techniques are used to frequency scale all transfer functions to a standardized frequency. Two common classes of filter functions in use today, Butterworth functions and Chebyshev functions, are based upon solutions to special cases of the Sturm-Liouville equation. Here, solutions to several other special cases of the Sturm-Liouville equation were used to develop filter functions, and the properties of the resulting filters were examined. The following functions were explored: Chebyshev functions of the second kind, untraspherical functions of the second and third kinds, Hermite functions, and Legendre functions. Filter functions were developed for each of the first five polynomials in each series of functions, and magnitude and phase responses were tabulated and plotted. …

A bench scale laboratory ozonator was constructed and determined to produce 27 mg O3/hr. A contacting system and experimental procedure was developed to approximate a mass balance of 0, 1, 2, 4, 8 and 16 ppm were applied to raw and magnesium treated water from Lake Washington which is the potable water source for Melbourne, Florida. The effect of ozone on trihalomethane precursors was studied by comparing THM formation at 1, 24, 48, 72, and 96 hours following chlorination. The concentrations of each specie, chloroform, bromodichloromethane, dibromochlormethane and bromoform are reported. The highest 96 hour TTHM concentrations reported were 2773 …

The new language is called GOAL, for Ground Operations Aerospace Language. The feasibility of a computer aided GOAL coding system that would reduce the effort required to create GOAL programs is investigated in this report. Lake Eola is a land-locked lake located in downtown Orlando, Florida. Its surface area is approximately 27.0 acres (11.0 Ha) and water depth is 2 to 3 feet (0.6 to 0.9 meters) near the shore and 22 feet (6.7 meters) toward the center. Periodical water samples were collected from the lake and storm drains for various stormwater events and physiochemical parameters were analyzed to calculated loading rates from nutrients and heavy metals released to Lake Eola. This research investigates organic polymers, inorganic coagulants and separate unit operations for their effect on the total tri-halogenated (TTHM) residuals in a finished water. The water samples utilized for this project were taken from a highly colored Central Florida potable water supply which is used by municipality which has a TTHM concentration in the finished water in excess of the proposed Federal limit. Results indicate that (1) organic polymers are not a significant source of THM precursors, (2) organic polymers, when used as a settling aid after coagulation in Jar tests, are an effective means of filtration for removing THM …

This paper illustrates Winograd's approach to computing the Discrete Fourier Transform (DFT). This new approach changes the DFT into a cyclic convolution of 2 sequences, and illustrates shortcuts for computing this cyclic convolution. This method is known to reduce the number of multiplies required to about 20% less than the number of multiplies used by the techniques of the Fast Fourier Transform. Three approaches are discussed, one for prime numbers, one for products of primes, and lastly one for powers of odd primes. For powers of 2 Winograd's algorithm is, in general, inefficient and best if it is not used. …

The analysis of the environmental impact of routine radioactive gaseous releases from operating nuclear power stations is discussed using a radiation dose assessment. This analysis includes a discussion of the origin of radionuclide effluents, a discussion of federal policies, and a calculation of radiation doses to man. A model of estimating the radioactive dose from gaseous effluents from light-water-cooled reactors is described using guidelines described in the Code of Federal Regulations and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission's Regulatory Guides. The environmental impact of these sources is then analyzed using dose rates calculated along critical exposure pathways for various radioactive nuclides. Examples …

Coupling efficiency an alignment sensitivity models for the coupling of light from a fundamental mode Gaussian light beam into a single mode optical fiber are given. Experimental results are presented which verify the coupling and misalignment predictions of the models. Data were taken at two wavelengths: 0.6328 and 0.8460 micrometers. The light sources were a HeNe laser and a GaAlAs laser respectively. Coupling efficiencies were measured versus beam spot size; and lateral, axial and angular misalignments of the beam and fiber axes.

A computer model of a fin and tube air-to-air heat exchanger is presented. The model incorporates a computational scheme to account for latent effects due to small amounts of moisture in one or both fluid streams. A testing program is described which was performed in order to mathematically characterize the heat transfer and pressure drop relationships of the tube with turbulator used in the heat exchanger. These relationships are included in the computer model. A comparison of the computer model to heat exchanger test data indicates that the computer model may be relied upon to provide design and analysis information. …

In large enough quantities, heavy metals may be detrimental to human health. Metals in raw water may pass through a water treatment plant without being completely removed. Once in a the distribution system, the water may experience metal pick-up due to corrosion. During the course of this study, an attempt was made to determine the heavy metal concentrations in the University of Central Florida's potable water systems. Samples were fun on the plasma spectrophotometer, Spectraspan III, and analyzed for heavy metal content. The results indicate pick-up of Fe, Al, Cu, and Zn in the distribution system. This thesis describes the operation of an intelligent controller existing between a computer system and a peripheral. The intelligent controller is implemented with an INTEL universal peripheral interface, UPI-41, single chip slave microcomputer. The interfaces between the controller and the computer system, and the controller and the peripheral are described in detail, as are the firmware and internal facilities of the controller itself. An evaluation of system operation is presented and, finally, the organizational philosophy of the system is discussed. Located within the appendices are a system schematic and listing of the controller program.

An assessment of the environmental effects of the nuclear fuel cycle industries is discussed, reactor waste inventory and standards are presented, and the alternatives for high-level radioactive waste disposal reviewed, with particular attention being given to disposal in deep geological formations on land. Two candidate microprocessors are selected to demonstrate that microprocessors can be effectively utilized in digital control applications. The Intel 8085A-2 is selected to represent 8-bit microprocessors and the Intel 8086 is selected to represent 16-bit. A baseline second order digital filter algorithm is developed for comparison of the performance of the two microprocessors for both software and hardware multiply implementations. Emulation techniques are utilized to facilitate performance comparison, without large investments in software and hardware development. Although a Transient Simulation Program (TRNSYS) has become a widely used model for simulating a solar energy system, there has not been extensive work done in validating this model with actual data. The approach used to validate this model consisted of a modular buildup of components with validation for each module. The wastewater from the electroplating processes required for the production of printed circuit boards has a high heavy metal content. The regulatory agencies of both the Federal Government and the State of Florida set pretreatment limitations on the quantity of the hazardous heavy metal ions that may be discharged t o a receiving body of water or to a Publicly Owned Treatment Works.
