The feasibility of representing human speech by serial digital codes was investigated by exercising specially constructed digital logic coupled with standard audio output equipment. The theories being tested represent a radical departure from previous efforts in the field of speech research. Therefore, this initial investigation was limited in scope to a study of unconnected English language speech sounds at the phenome level. The experiments were conducted in two parts, with the first being the development of serialized digital codes, for selected speech sounds, derived from actual human speech. The purpose of this paper is to present the development and use of a computer program to perform an automated structural design of two dimensional static concrete structural systems. The structural systems considered herein are composed of reinforced concrete beams and columns connected by rigid joints. Structural systems composed of large numbers of joints and members may be analyzed by using the developed program. The paper presents the development of the structural analysis using the displacement method and matrix techniques and the development of the concrete axial-moment interaction criteria. This is a brief investigation of stormwater runoff from a large shopping center located in Brevard County, Florida. Merritt Square Shopping Center has a parking area for 4,700 automobiles and is located on the shore of Newfound Harbor which is classified as recreation waters (Class III). A literature survey of runoff studies in other areas has been made for both "state of the art" and evaluation of findings. Water samples were initially collected from five locations. Review of the analysis of these samples indicated that while color and turbidity appeared to decrease linearly with time, organic and inorganic concentrations did …

The current energy crisis has pointed out the need for alternative, non-depletable sources of power. Solar energy would appear to be a likely source of such power for the state of Florida where the average home receives enough of this energy to supply all of its heating and cooling needs during the course of the year. Energy consumption profiles for Florida reveal that almost one-quarter of all energy is consumed within the residential-commercial section for basic heating and cooling. Additionally, the state is, essentially, totally dependent on petroleum and natural gas for its energy supply. Solar energy has been used …

The objective of this paper is to investigate the feasibility of large scale electric power generation in the state of Florida by means of solar conversion. Such systems convert solar radiation directly to electricity or to thermal energy and subsequently to electricity. With the latter method, solar energy is initially collected and converted to heat at high temperature through a working fluid. The heat is then used to power conventional heat engine generator systems. Several methods have been proposed for converting sunlight to useful work. The most promising of these will be examined from a technological and economic viewpoint.

The purpose of this paper was to design a simplified wind tunnel force balance for use in elementary aerodynamics/wind tunnel laboratory courses. The applied loads and moments were determined to be as follows: The design lift force is ± 20 lbs, the design drag force is ± 10 pounds, the design pitching moment is ± 20 inch-pounds. The force balance output accuracy was arbitrarily set at ± 5% since this would be sufficient for preliminary student work. This report is concerned with the performance of solar hot water units for laboratory and field use. A solar unit is defined as a system consisting of a collector, storage tank, piping system and controls. Older unites typically employ the thermosyphon principle (gravity) while more recent models use a water pump to circulate the water. Basically, the collector absorbs solar radiation and transfers thermal energy to the water flowing in the collector tubing. From the collector, the fluid is pumped to the storage tank at which point the hot water is available for usage. A literature search revealed that very …

A test method and the associated equipment have been developed to investigate the effect of suspended solids on the flow of fluid into a deep injection well system. Preliminary testing indicates that the equipment and test method can be used to determine the permeability of rock samples with a high degree of accuracy. Additionally this equipment can be used in a testing program which will eventually lead to the development of guidelines for the degree of pre-injection treatment required for suspended solids so that the operational life of the well is not impaired.

The Tactical Communication Control System has been conceived to meet the demands of military users which are currently both analog and digital but steadily evolving to all - digital. It is a study of the design and application of multiplexers, modems, processors, switches, and other nodal equipment to accommodate communications among telephone and data users in a tactical environment. This paper presents a review of several computer graphics systems. The need for a universal graphics language is discussed and some typical languages are investigated. Several types of display terminals have been researched and their advantages and disadvantages have been listed. A vector plotting routine has been programmed on a microprocessor system as a part of the research. A description of the vector plotting system is included in this paper. The system could be a "modular unit" for general purpose use with any alphanumeric raster-scan display terminal and a simple graphics language.

The history of solid waste management in Lake County, Florida is reviewed. The role of governmental agencies is mentioned. Local environmental characteristics and transportation systems are discussed. Existing collection and disposal practices are presented. A land use analysis of the unincorporated areas of the County is given. Projections of population and solid waste quantities are listed. Two computer models are presented. Their optimum solutions are analyzed in detail. The cost associated with implementing either plan is presented. A recommended plan is given based on a combination of transfer stations and sanitary landfills.

A study was made of existing methods of management, treatment and disposal of water and wastewater effluents at a large aerospace facility (Martin Marietta Aerospace) in Central Florida. Water consumption and handling were evaluated, with emphasis being placed on the handling of plating wastes, since they are the main contributor of industrial wastewater pollutants at the facility. The flow, storage, and treatment of the plating wastes were studied. Literature concerning plating wastes was surveyed to determine the latest "state of the art" on handling of plating pollutants. Literature reviews on various stream processes which contribute to reoxygenation and deoxygenation was presented. These processes include atmospheric reaeration, photosynthesis-respiration, biochemical oxygen consumption, and benthic demand. Measuring these parameters in a selected stream is a complex and costly operation. On the other hand, prediction models developed are specific to particular location and environmental conditions and can only be applied to similar situations. Computer models such as "RIVER" are available and could be used to predict dissolved oxygen concentrations along a waterway for a specified set of stream conditions. Computer generated holograms have been made practical by the introduction of fast Fourier transform algorithms. The following discussion will brief the reader on the theory and concepts of optical holograms, the computer hologram, and the analogies of the computer hologram to its optical counterpart. Some of the programming aspects of the computer holograms are presented. The results of the generation of several computer holograms are presented, and conclusions drawn as to the effectiveness of this technique. Finally, some of the practical uses and advantages of the computer hologram are discussed.

Stormwater management necessitates a regional plan based on the best practical methods. "Storm", a mathematical model, is employed to simulate runoff conditions in the Shingle Creek Basin. The computed runoff quantity is calibrated directly with the streams hydrograph. Runoff quality is predicted with two sets of pollutant loading rates. The scope of the model is expanded by development of parametric curves that can be used to convert measured quality data to input land use loadings. A parametric study is also performed to fabricate the effects of urbanization on the Shingle Creek Basin.

This report analyzes freeway data from a moving merge control system in Tampa, Florida. The distribution of velocity at sensors in the roadway is plotted and compared to a normal distribution. The size of the gaps at each sensor are computed and compared to those at a sensor downstream. The distributions of the change in gap size are plotted for all gaps and then for gaps between the same pairs of vehicles, to determine the effects of prohibiting lane changing. This report summarizes the design of a digital frequency synthesizer for airborne distance measuring equipment. It is the purpose of the frequency synthesizer to provide a stable frequency source for the local oscillator of the airborne receiver and for the power amplifiers in the transmitter chain. The synthesizer is required to furnish a frequency ranging from 260.250 mHz to 287.50 mHz in channel steps of 250 kHz at a power level of +7.0 dBm. the stability of the frequency must be greater than .005% over the temperature range of from minus 45 degrees centigrade to plus 55 degrees centigrade, requiring …

A computer model of a flat plate solar collector has been devised. The model is able to simulate most common types of collectors, with up to three transparent covers of any material. Using primarily equations available from the literature the model calculates the transmission through the cover plates, the heat losses, and the useful heat gain. Derivation of all equations used are presented. A new method is presented for calculation of the mean plate temperature which differs from that commonly used in the literature. A Comparison Of Corrosion Rates Determined By Polarization Resistance Measurements For Zinc And Cadmium Metal Immersed In Nonstirred Aqueous Portland Cement Solution, William James Moore

The effect of nonstirred aqueous Portland cement solution on the corrosion rates of zinc and cadmium metal using Tafel extrapolation and linear polarization measurements has been investigated. Results indicate that for the corrosion systems under investigation, zinc metal has a higher corrosion potential and lower corrosion rate than cadmium metal.
