Medium Duty Gas-Turbine Engine Blade Removal Tool, Elliott James Greb, Jacob Thomas Syage, Kellen Thomas Field
Medium Duty Gas-Turbine Engine Blade Removal Tool, Elliott James Greb, Jacob Thomas Syage, Kellen Thomas Field
Mechanical Engineering
Solar Turbines Incorporated sponsored a team of three Cal Poly Undergraduate Mechanical Engineering students to design, manufacture, prototype, and test a tool for the removal of turbine blades from their respective disk assembly without damaging the disk itself. The tool was developed for Solar’s industrial gas turbine engines. The tool complies with all OSHA and Solar Turbines safety and engineering constraints, and was designed for use in a shop facility. The tool was made adaptable for geometric variances in multiple turbine rotor disk stages, and requires no more than one technician to operate using a maximum of two shop resources. …
The Study Of Ionization In A Military, Heavy-Duty, Diesel Engine, Steven Zielinski
The Study Of Ionization In A Military, Heavy-Duty, Diesel Engine, Steven Zielinski
Wayne State University Theses
This thesis is an investigation of ionization in a military, heavy-duty, diesel engine. Ionization is a phenomenon which occurs in both spark-ignited and diesel engines. During the reactions of combustion, charged molecules and electrons are produced. The current produced, ion current, from these charges can be measured. The measurement of ion current can serve as an in-cylinder diagnostic for closed-loop engine control strategies. In this work, a literature review was performed to survey previous work as it pertains to ionization in diesel engines. In addition, a detailed description and comparison of the HEUI injection system was made to HPCR. This …

Direct Injection (DI) has been known for its improved performance and efficiency in gasoline spark-ignition engines. However, wall wetting is inevitable and the source of UHC and PM. In order to take advantage of the GDI technology, it is important to investigate spray wall interactions in detail.
Numerical and experimental studies are carried out for spray and wall impingements in an optical constant volume vessel. The fuel film was measured spatially and …
Formula Sae Turbocharger Engine Development, Eric Griess, Kevin Mccutcheon, Matthew Roberts, William Chan
Formula Sae Turbocharger Engine Development, Eric Griess, Kevin Mccutcheon, Matthew Roberts, William Chan
Mechanical Engineering
This project, Formula SAE Turbocharger System Development, was sponsored by the Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo Formula SAE team. The team proposed this project in order to have a powerful yet lightweight engine so they can be extremely competitive at their competition. The baseline output of the single cylinder 450cc engine (2006 Yamaha WR450F) was 46 horsepower and 27 ft-lb of torque. The goal of this project was to increase the output of that engine to 60 horsepower and 35 ft-lb through the use of a turbocharger.

Engine Simulation And Diagnostic Test Bed: Final Design Report, Jeff Lewis, Cody Scott, Todd Smith
Mechanical Engineering
The San Luis Obispo High School Automotive Technology Shop has a 1991 Buick V-6 Engine which uses the OBD-I (On-Board Diagnostics, generation one) standard for diagnostic testing and troubleshooting. In order to expand the capabilities of the Automotive Technology program and allow students to gain first-hand experience troubleshooting older OBD-I engines, the shop has a need for this engine to become part of a diagnostic and troubleshooting test bed. Some of the diagnostic tests the students will perform include checking cylinder pressure, monitoring coolant system temperatures, interpreting error codes from the OBD-I system, and conducting enhanced smog testing. All of …
Effects Of Supercooled Water Ingestion On Engine Performance, Rick Hutchings
Effects Of Supercooled Water Ingestion On Engine Performance, Rick Hutchings
Masters Theses
An aircraft will encounter freezing rain, snow, and ice during ground operation and flight. In cold conditions, ice may form on th einlet and internal stators and rotors of the gas turbine engine. When ice accumulates on blades (and/or stators), the aerodynamic characteristics of the blades change due to the altered size, shape, and roughness. This change causes the blade to no longer operate at its design point and decreases compressor performance. Therefore, characterization of the aerodynamic performance is required to define the associated losses due to the effects of supercooled liquid water ingestion. This characterization can be accomplished through …

Mechanical Engineering
This project, engine development, was sponsored by Cal Poly FormulaSAE. The FormulaSAE team proposed this project in order to have a more reliable and more powerful engine for their car, to improve their overall performance at their competition. The baseline output of the engine is 37 hp and 24 lb-ft of torque. The goal of this project was to increase the output to 45 hp, to meet requirements determined by a trade study. We planned to increase the engine’s output using several strategies.
We evaluated all potential design decisions using a Ricardo WAVE model. Ricardo WAVE is a software tool …
