Simulation Of An Air Cooled Single-Effect Solar Absorption Cooling System With Evacuated Tube Collectors, Mohsen Jahandardoost Dec 2015

Simulation Of An Air Cooled Single-Effect Solar Absorption Cooling System With Evacuated Tube Collectors, Mohsen Jahandardoost

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Consistently increasing CO2 emission and ozone depletion from synthetic refrigerants are serious environmental issues challenging the scientific community. Absorption cooling systems give scope of utilizing low grade energy source for generating cooling effect. Solar energy is one of these low grade energy sources and with considering the fact that cooling demand increases with the intensity of solar radiation, solar refrigeration has been considered as a logical solution.

This thesis consists of two different simulation stages, in the first stage, a single effect lithium bromide absorption cooling system with constant cooling capacity is modeled and the effect of ambient and generator …

Numerical Modeling Of Heat Pipe Radiator And Fin Size Optimization For Low And No Gravity Environments, Virginia Ruth Bieger Aug 2013

Numerical Modeling Of Heat Pipe Radiator And Fin Size Optimization For Low And No Gravity Environments, Virginia Ruth Bieger

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

A heat-pipe radiator element has been designed and modeled to study the efficiency of heat transfer for low and no gravity environments, like in lunar environments. The advantages of using heat pipe includes the significant weight reducing and heat transfer efficiency. The heat transfer can be enhanced by the use of condenser sections with attached fins.

A series of various geometries of solid fins and heat pipes with and without fins were modeled using FLUENT®. This was done to determine the validity of using a heat pipe in lieu of a solid fin projection. A heat pipe had a 25 …

The Design And Testing Of A Solar Autoclave With Broad Spectrum Sterilization Capabilities, Sarah S. Trabia Nov 2012

The Design And Testing Of A Solar Autoclave With Broad Spectrum Sterilization Capabilities, Sarah S. Trabia

Honors College Theses

Energy is difficult to come by in developing countries and this interferes with the ability of doctors to provide good healthcare to their patients. Without decent sterilization, patients can become infected and diseases can spread throughout hospitals. This study involves designing a solar autoclave for developing countries that is as efficient as electrical autoclaves. The design is intended to not require any electrical input and to be affordable to those who cannot afford advanced medical equipment. Once the solar autoclave is designed, it will be tested to determine if it can sterilize equipment against a variety of different bacteria, including …

Time-Dependent Crack Growth Behavior Of Alloy 617 And Alloy 230 At Elevated Temperatures, Shawoon Kumar Roy Aug 2011

Time-Dependent Crack Growth Behavior Of Alloy 617 And Alloy 230 At Elevated Temperatures, Shawoon Kumar Roy

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Two Ni-base solid-solution-strengthened superalloys: INCONEL 617 and HAYNES 230 were studied to check sustained loading crack growth (SLCG) behavior at elevated temperatures appropriate for Next Generation Nuclear Plant (NGNP) applictaions with constant stress intensity factor (K max = 27.75 MPa[checkmark]m) in air. The results indicate a time-dependent rate controlling process which can be characterized by a linear elastic fracture mechanics (LEFM) parameter - stress intensity factor (K). At elevated temperatures, the crack growth mechanism was best described using a damage zone concept. Based on results and study, SAGBOE (stress accelerated grain boundary oxidation embrittlement) is considered the primary reason for …

Immersion Cooling Of Photovoltaic Cells In Highly Concentrated Solar Beams, Ahmed Darwish Aug 2011

Immersion Cooling Of Photovoltaic Cells In Highly Concentrated Solar Beams, Ahmed Darwish

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Concentrated solar radiation can be utilized to generate electrical power from photovoltaic cells, but concentrated solar radiation increases the photovoltaic cell’s temperature. This increase in temperature can lead to degradation of the cell efficiency, and too high of a temperature can damage the cell’s integrity. This is particularly important in dish and tower systems where a maximum uniform flux may be difficult to achieve. While a variety of approaches have been used to the keep the cells cool, most are based upon removal of heat from the back (opposite surface of the incident flux exposed surface) of the cell. This …

Development Of Hydrogen Direct Injection For Conversion Of Internal Combustion Engines, Maxwell A. Wilson May 2010

Development Of Hydrogen Direct Injection For Conversion Of Internal Combustion Engines, Maxwell A. Wilson

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

The trend toward usage of vehicles that operate on alternative, renewable forms of energy storage has generated areas for development of new products that will facilitate implementation of new automotive fuel systems. As the reality of a hydrogen-fueled economy emerges, intermediate technologies may be necessary for the transition between hydrocarbon fueled internal combustion engines and hydrogen powered fuel cells. The University of Nevada Las Vegas Center for Energy Research has developed a method for converting the common hydrocarbon fueled internal combustion engine to hydrogen direct injected fueling. This thesis describes the second phase of development and involves the design, fabrication …

Experimental Evaluation And Modeling Of Engine Driven Heat Pump, Isaac Y. Mahderekal May 2009

Experimental Evaluation And Modeling Of Engine Driven Heat Pump, Isaac Y. Mahderekal

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Recently, the Gas Engine-Driven Heat Pump (GHP) System has become an economic choice and more attractive climate control system than the conventional air conditioner due to its advantage in reducing fossil fuel consumption and environmental pollution. The GHP is a new type of heat pump in which the compressor (the core part) is driven by a gas engine. The GHP typically uses the work produced by the engine to drive a vapor-compression heat pump. At the same time, the waste heat rejected by the engine is used for heating purposes.

To improve the system performance of the GHP, a numerical …
