Investigating The Effects Of Aggregate Size And Reinforcement On Asr Cracking In Concrete Structures Studied With Different Evaluation Methods, David Joseph Bianco Apr 2020

Investigating The Effects Of Aggregate Size And Reinforcement On Asr Cracking In Concrete Structures Studied With Different Evaluation Methods, David Joseph Bianco

Theses and Dissertations

The objective of this thesis is to investigate different (non-destructive) evaluation methods to assess the effects of reactive aggregate size and reinforcement on ASR affected concrete. It has been shown in previous literature that reactive coarse aggregates lead to more expansion as opposed to reactive fine aggregates. However, there is a lack in the literature exhibiting this relationship using different evaluation methods, such as acoustic emission (AE) and ultrasonic pulse velocity (UPV). Also, the literature does not emphasize the role this relationship plays when the concrete is imposed with stress boundary conditions. Non-destructive test methods, including acoustic emission, are becoming …

Structural Design Of Pool House In The City Of Columbia, Nathan F. Gates Apr 2020

Structural Design Of Pool House In The City Of Columbia, Nathan F. Gates

Senior Theses

This report presents a structural design for a one-story pool house in the City of Columbia. The most important part of the project was determining critical horizontal and vertical loads, and designing each member in accordance to those governing loads. The loads we analyzed were dynamic, dead, live and seismic. By means of the LRFD method, the greatest possible load combination was calculated, combining the previously mentioned loads. These load combinations were different for each analysis, as the loading pressures will change depending on what structural system is being analyzed. This comprises the large part of the report and of …

Robust Maximum Flow Network Interdiction Problem, Darshan Rajesh Chauhan Jan 2020

Robust Maximum Flow Network Interdiction Problem, Darshan Rajesh Chauhan

Dissertations and Theses

In this thesis, a maximum flow-based network interdiction problem considering uncertainties in arc capacities and interdiction resource consumption is solved. The problem consists of two entities with opposing objectives: the goal of the adversary is to maximize the flow of illicit drugs through the network, while the goal of the interdictor is to minimize the maximum flow by completely interdicting arcs given a specified amount of resources. Lack of complete information about the usage patterns of the transportation network by the adversary results in an uncertain estimate of arc capacity and resources required for interdiction by the interdictor. To account …

ABSTRACT

ENERGY DISSIPATING CONNECTOR FOR PRECAST SHEAR WALLS IN HIGH-SEISMIC AREAS

By

Mohammed Aljuboori

The University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee, 2019

Under the Supervision of Dr. Habib Tabatabai

Precast concrete systems are widely used in a variety of structures such as parking garages, residential units, shopping centers, and transportation stations. In some cases, precast structures are preferred over conventional cast-in-place (CIP) concrete conventional structures because of ease of construction, rapid implementation, and lower levels of energy consumption. One area where precast systems have traditionally been at a disadvantage is high seismic applications. In seismic regions, precast concrete structures must have …

The state of Ohio is in a region that commonly experiences drastic changes in weather. States with similar climates are susceptible to pavement cracking and failures due to the frequent or extreme freeze-thaw cycles. Freeze-thaw cycles, paired with de-icing chemicals that are frequently placed on roadways during the winter months will most likely lead to pavement cracks and failure. Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) routinely repairs and replaces sections of concrete roadways and bridge decks. Therefore, ODOT is seeking durable, cost-effective materials to repair smaller pavement failures.

The purpose of this study is to determine which high performance repair materials …

A New Multidimensional Psycho-Physical Framework For Modeling Car-Following In A Freeway Work Zone, Taylor Lochrane Jan 2014

A New Multidimensional Psycho-Physical Framework For Modeling Car-Following In A Freeway Work Zone, Taylor Lochrane

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

As the United States continues to build and repair the ageing highway infrastructure, the bearing of freeway work zones will continue to impact the capacity. To predict the capacity of a freeway work zone, there are several tools available for engineers to evaluate these work zones but only microsimulation has the ability to simulate the driver behavior. One of the limitations of current car-following models is that they only account for one overall behavioral condition. This dissertation hypothesizes that drivers change their driving behavior as they drive through a freeway work zone compared to normal freeway conditions which has the …
