A group of RIT Mechanical Engineering students spent the 2014-2015 academic year in their senior design class collaborating with the RIT Cary Graphic Arts Collection to design and fabricate a 21st century hand-operated platen press.

The press that was designed during this engineering exercise met several requirements:

  • be under 30 lbs
  • fit in a 24 inch square table top space
  • be manufactured with a majority of components which could be purchased from a standard parts supplier
  • be able to print with commonly manufactured ink rollers, ink, letterpress chases, spacing and furniture

While integrated circuit (IC) power management has been an eternal topic for chip designers, inductor based DC-DC converters have been dominant in the field for years. However, because of the natures of inductors: large electro-magnetic interference, high coupling noise, and difficult silicon fabrication process, they are not favorable to on-chip solutions. Switched-capacitor (SC) DC-DC converters, which adopt capacitors for their energy storage components, have become increasingly popular among both the academia and the industry, because, apparently, they avoid the drawbacks of the inductor counterparts, and can be directly implemented on-chip without additional fabrication process.

The tunneling-FET (TFET) has been identified as a prospective MOSFET replacement technology with the potential to extend geometric and electrostatic scaling of digital integrated circuits. However, experimental demonstrations of the TFET have yet to reliably achieve drive currents necessary to power large scale integrated circuits. Consequentially, much effort has gone into optimizing the band-to-band tunneling (BTBT) efficiency of the TFET. Transverse fiber modes are the distribution of electromagnetic fields in the cross-section of an optical fiber through which light propagates in the fiber. Research is being conducted to explore the usage of fiber modes with the purpose of increasing the capacity and reach of optical fibers. Available design trends for big end connecting rod bearings utilize widely adopted rapid methods for prediction of minimum film thickness due to their superior speed and ease of use. However, they impose unrealistic assumptions such as surface rigidity, which could compromise the accuracy of results. The significance of structural elasticity and updated models was investigated using a mode based elastohydrodynamic lubrication model which includes body forces, mass conserving cavitation, and surface roughness. Raw Cyber attack traffic can present more questions than answers to security analysts. Especially with large-scale observables it is difficult to identify which packets are relevant and what attack behaviors are present. Many existing works in Host or Flow Clustering attempt to group similar behaviors to expedite analysis; these works often phrase the problem directly as offline unsupervised machine learning. Self-assembled quantum dots (QDs) and nanowires (NWs) are currently the subjects of extensive study due to their promising applications in optoelectronic devices. In order to enhance understanding of the short circuit current improvement in InAs/GaAs quantum dots solar cell (QDSC), the mechanisms of carrier escape by thermal activation and tunneling from InAs quantum dots (QDs) confinements in InAs/GaAs QDSCs are investigated. The fitted activation energy of electrons from temperature dependent photoluminescence (TDPL) is 114 meV. Using this fitted activation energy, calculated thermal escape time and tunneling time of electrons from the ground state of the QDs are 10-12 seconds and …

Previous research has shown that the performance of any computation is directly related to the architecture on which it is performed. As a result, the performance of compute intensive applications can be improved using heterogeneous systems. These systems consist of various processor architectures such as CPU, FPGA, DSP, and GPU. Individual computations can be performed in parallel on different processor architecrues within the heterogeneous system. Computations are performed by utilizing existing designs from implementation libraries. An analysis of Reusable Packaging in automobile manufacturing facilities, as well as a comparison to other industries, shows that returnable container systems are not being fully utilized.

In this study, methods to return and track packaging materials for reuse are examined. Issues identified through surveys and interviews are summarized, and a recommendation to more fully utilize systems currently in place is proposed. An evaluation based on utilizing the current system will enable us to assign a cost to current operations, and may support an investment in improved systems and technologies.

This study provides the analysis for the optimal design of a conventional vehicle suspension system, consisting of a sprung mass (vehicle body) and two unsprung masses (wheel frame), accentuated by the implementation of a damped absorber to the unsprung masses. Further, the effect of the c.g. (center of gravity) location of the vehicle body is investigated. A two dimensional, four degrees of freedom linear model is chosen. Randomly profiled terrain is assumed to impart hyperbolically distributed stationary vertical random displacements to the front and rear wheels. Analysis Of Compliant Pins Subjected To Plastic Deformation, Lincoln Miller

An experimental/numerical analysis of two types of compliant pins is presented: dynamic retention pins and cantilever pins. It is shown that there is a trade-off between the performances of both types of pins. For the same range of retention force, the cantilever pin, with a smaller stiffness, is more forgiving and gives a broader range of deflection. The dynamic retention pin is shown to be more reliable with time and replacement frequency, since it exhibits less plastic deformation for the same range of retention force.

Collection of linewidth data is an important part of photoresist characterization. Linewidth data are usually collected by optical measurements or scanning electron microscopy. Both of these techniques are tedious and time-consuming. In this work, electrically measurable test structures are used to collect linewidth data. These structures use a measured sheet resistance, a known length of conducting material, and the measured resistance of the structure to determine the linewidth. The benefits of using these structures include completely automated data collection and the ability to collect statistically significant amounts of data.
