Zeeman absorption spectra have been obtained for B and Ga in Ge for B∥〈100〉 in the Voigt configuration with plane-polarized radiation. All twelve allowed transitions were observed for both the G and D lines. The corresponding excited states of these two lines for both impurities behave identically; two recent theoretical results are in good agreement. The measurements are a sensitive probe of the ground states; there are differences between the behavior of these for the two acceptors.

Band-gap photoluminescence (PL) is used to establish the optical signature of a GaAs-Ga1-xAlxAs heterojunction in the extreme quantum limit. The temperature and field dependence of new PL structure maps a phase boundary which correlates with the electron liquid-solid transition.

Hole-Quasiparticle Resonant Polaron Coupling In Quantum Wells Containing High Densities Of Free Carriers , Philip E. Simmonds, M. S. Skolnick, T. A. Fisher, K. J. Nash, R. S. Smith

Strong resonant-polaron-coupling phenomena in the magnetophotoluminescence (magneto-PL) spectra of modulation-doped quantum wells are reported. The polaron interactions arise between hole quasiparticles in otherwise filled electron Landau levels, and LO phonons of the quantum-well material. This type of many-body polaron-coupling phenomenon is expected to be a universal feature of the magneto-PL spectra of quantum wells with electron Fermi energy greater than the LO-phonon energy of the well material.

Disnibuted Manipulation Environment (DME), is a concept based on the overall modularity of a manufacturing system including actuation, sensing, control, computing hardware and software. The basic building block of DME is the Manipulation Module (MM). Each MM may consist of up to three units including processing the unit, actuating unit and sensory unit. The emphasis of this paper is on the actuating unit of the Manipulation Modules used in DME. The generic features of the actuators suitable for this application are discussed and a review of the motion producing characteristics of the following actuator technologies is presented: electrostatic, electromagnetic, fluid …

Effect Of A Robot's Geometrical Parameters On Its Optimal Dynamic Performance, M. Yousef Ibrahim, Christopher D. Cook, A K. Tieu

This paper presents a study that was conducted at Monash University College - Gippsland on the effect of a robot’s geometrical parameters on its dynamic performance. This research was undertaken in pursuit of an optimal dynamic performance of industrial robots. In this study an indicator was established to quantitatively measure the dynamic performance of a robot arm with respect to changes in the geometrical parameters. Since the dynamic behaviour of a robot’s arm is largely dependent on its inertia terms; the performance indicator was based on the Logarithmic function of the sensitivity of the inertia matrix’s eigenvalues to changes in …

The Quantum Theory For Anomalous Low-Temperature Thermal Conductivity Of Noncrystalline Dielectric Solids, W L. Zhao, B L. Zhou

Faculty of Engineering - Papers (Archive)

We discuss the interaction between two-level systems and the phonon field in noncrystalline dielectric solids, and we calculate the quantum transition matrix elements ofsuch an interaction. After studying the Boltzmann equation for phonon transport. we obtain the phonon distribution function. From a direct calculation of the heat current, and as a result of obtaining the thermal conductivity of non-crystalline dielectric solids, the P relation is obtained.

This paper describes the observed and the predicted performance of a full-scale trial embankment built to failure on a soft Malaysian marine clay. Predictions of the subsoil deformation. the critical height of fill and the corresponding slip surface are made and subsequently compared to the field measurements. It is of importance to realize that all the predictions were made prior to the actual failure of the embankment. The comparison with measurements was possible only after the International Symposium on Trial Embankments on Malaysian Marine Clays, was held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, in November 1989, during which the field data were …

The application of computer vision in industry has been increasing as greater use is made of flexible automation and robotics. Quality control and sorting can also be heavily dependent on artificial vision interfaced to an intelligent decision making system. Traditionally industrial tasks requiring computer vision are simplified to a 2-D problem in a plane. This permits the use of a single camera and hence reduces the complexity of the procedures of frame grabbing, image processing and decision making. Such a solution is however not suitable when 3-D information is vital in the control or decision making processes. Generation and processing …

Magnetic-Field-Induced Indirect Gap In A Modulation-Doped Quantum Well , D. M. Whittaker, T. A. Fisher, Philip E. Simmonds, M. S. Skolnick, R. Smith Aug 1991

Magnetic-Field-Induced Indirect Gap In A Modulation-Doped Quantum Well , D. M. Whittaker, T. A. Fisher, Philip E. Simmonds, M. S. Skolnick, R. Smith

Faculty of Engineering - Papers (Archive)

We report the first experimental evidence for the indirect fundamental band gap developed when an in-plane magnetic field is applied to a modulation-doped quantum well. The observed photoluminescence peak for the lowest subband undergoes a large, approximately quadratic shift with field, a consequence of the behavior of the allowed transitions in the increasingly indirect-gap band-structure. A good theoretical fit is obtained by calculating the transition energies using a realistic self-consistent Hartree potential for the quantum-well profile.

A study of the Fermi-energy-edge singularity in asymmetric modulation-doped quantum wells is reported. It is shown that high densities of free carriers in filled n=1 electron subbands have no significant influence on the edge singularity in partly occupied n=2 subbands, demonstrating the weakness of intersubband Coulomb-scattering processes. The enhancement of oscillator strength at the Fermi energy is of very similar magnitude to that for excitonic transitions in undoped quantum wells.

Robust Adaptive Control For Industrial Robots - A Decentralized System Method, M Liu, Christopher D. Cook Jan 1990

Robust Adaptive Control For Industrial Robots - A Decentralized System Method, M Liu, Christopher D. Cook

Faculty of Engineering - Papers (Archive)

An adaptive control approach is presented for the tracking control of industrial robots. The approach utilizes the fact that a robot model can be described by equations that are linear in the system's unknown parameters. Taking uncertainties into account, the resulting controller has the property of robustness. The proof of stability and analytical results of the boundness of position tracking errors are given. By introducing filter operations in state measurements, the approach avoids the difficulty of measuring the accelerations of the robots' actuators. Simulation results are also presented

Simulation Of The Effect Of Wind On Rectangular Sedimentation Tanks, Muttucumaru Sivakumar, S A. Lowe Jan 1990

Simulation Of The Effect Of Wind On Rectangular Sedimentation Tanks, Muttucumaru Sivakumar, S A. Lowe

Faculty of Engineering - Papers (Archive)

A numerical model is presented to simulate the effect of wind action on rectangular sedimentation tanks used in water and wastewater treatment plants. The mathematical model uses the k-r. model for fl uid flow and sediment transport, and is solved using an explicit finite diffence scheme incorporating a penalty function approach. Simulations of fluid flow velocity and aeqiment concentration are presented for two wind speeds in two directions. It is shown that the effect of wind action is significant and future design of sedimentation tanks should include this parameter.
