Fingering Instabilities Of Confined Elastic Layers In Tension, Kenneth R. Shull, Cynthia M. Flanigan, Alfred Crosby Apr 2000

Fingering Instabilities Of Confined Elastic Layers In Tension, Kenneth R. Shull, Cynthia M. Flanigan, Alfred Crosby

Alfred Crosby

Fingering instabilities similar to those commonly observed in viscous systems have been observed in purely elastic layers that are strained in tension. The instability is driven by the release of lateral constraints within a confined elastic layer and is observed when the lateral confinement significantly exceeds the thickness of the elastic layer. Our results show convincingly that yielding or flow of a material is not required in order for fingering to be initiated in a confined material.

Research Ethics: An Introduction, Tom Regan Apr 2000

Research Ethics: An Introduction, Tom Regan

Ethics in Science and Engineering National Clearinghouse

Research Ethics: an Introduction focuses both on how Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR) fits into the field of applied ethics and on procedures for making decisions that have a moral component. Tom Regan presents “Morally Relevant Questions: A Check List” with the central theme of balancing conflicting obligations. We expand this discussion with several classic resources by well known experts in research ethics that articulate critical topics. We present a Case Study from The Association for Practical and Professional Ethics. We consider the question of professional codes and think about the toll of making the right decision. In the Additional …

The Mentoring Of Graduate Students, Margaret King Apr 2000

The Mentoring Of Graduate Students, Margaret King

Ethics in Science and Engineering National Clearinghouse

The Mentoring of Graduate Students presents basic issues that face both mentors and their protégés. Margaret King, the Graduate School, is our faculty guide for this module. We focus on some of the ethical values most central to the mentoring process such as justice and the idea of contracts. One of the challenges of the mentoring experience is that it involves rules and practices both tangible and intangible. Dr. King explores some of these intangibles- Right Attention, Right Balance, Right Empowerment and Right Boundaries- in the central essay and we focus on them additionally in our Central Theme section. We …

The goal of this module is to present the major issues surrounding intellectual property (IP): rather than attempt to discuss all four types of IP, trademarks, trade secrets, patents and copyright, we will focus on copyright. Our Faculty Expert for this module is Peggy Hoon, Director of the Scholarly Communications Center, NC State University. The Overview section presents two chapters from two well known textbooks on research ethics. In the Applied Ethics portion we discuss the idea of the labor contract and the idea of the Intellectual Commons to clarify some of the more complex issues. In the Central Theme …

Responsible Use Of Statistical Methods, Larry Nelson, Charles Proctor, Cavell Brownie Apr 2000

Responsible Use Of Statistical Methods, Larry Nelson, Charles Proctor, Cavell Brownie

Ethics in Science and Engineering National Clearinghouse

Responsible Use of Statistical Methods focuses on good statistical practices. In the Introduction we distinguish between two types of activities; one, those involving the study design and protocol (a priori) and two, those actions taken with the results (post hoc.) We note that right practice is right ethics, the distinction between a mistake and misconduct and emphasize the importance of how the central hypothesis is stated. The Central Essay, Identification of Outliers in a Set of Precision Agriculture Experimental Data by Larry A. Nelson, Charles H. Proctor and Cavell Brownie, is a good paper to study. The Applied Ethics section …

Science And The Media: Ethics Issues, Joann Burkholder Apr 2000

Science And The Media: Ethics Issues, Joann Burkholder

Ethics in Science and Engineering National Clearinghouse

This module addresses the complex interface of research and the media; this interface necessarily involves issues of public policy, however, for the purposes of this module we will focus on media issues and touch on public policy in the Thinking Outside the Box section. For simplicity, when we refer to “media” we are speaking of journalists covering the science beat. In the Introduction we talk about the special collaboration between the media and the researcher and the challenges both face in communicating science to the public at large. We note the ethical component inherent in all communication and include quotations …

Space Lateral Transfer And Negative Differential Conductance Regimes In Quantum Waveguide, Eric Polizzi, N. Ben Abdallah, O. Vanbésien, D. Lippens Mar 2000

Space Lateral Transfer And Negative Differential Conductance Regimes In Quantum Waveguide, Eric Polizzi, N. Ben Abdallah, O. Vanbésien, D. Lippens

Eric Polizzi

Nonlinear conduction properties of multiport quantum waveguide-based devices are theoretically investigated. A two dimensional finite element solver for the time independent Schrödinger equation combined with Poisson equation has been developed. It handles arbitrary geometrical designs and potential profiles in the device active zone. Starting from transmission spectra calculated out of equilibrium, current–voltage characteristics of a quantum branch line directional coupler are derived as a function of the chemical potential of the injection region and of the applied bias between the input and output terminals of the structure. Under the approximation of ballistic transport, a detailed analysis of mono- and multimode …

Nonlinear Control Of Competitive Mixed-Culture Bioreactors Via Specific Cell Adhesion, Michael J. Kurtz, Michael A. Henson, Martin A. Hjortsø Feb 2000

Nonlinear Control Of Competitive Mixed-Culture Bioreactors Via Specific Cell Adhesion, Michael J. Kurtz, Michael A. Henson, Martin A. Hjortsø

Michael A Henson

A nonlinear control strategy is developed for competitive mixed-culture bioreactors in which two cell populations compete for a common growth limiting substrate. A stream is periodically removed from the reactor, and the two cell populations are separated using specific cell adhesion. The steady state corresponding to the desired population fraction is stabilized by discarding faster growing cells and recycling slower growing cells to the reactor. The recycle loop must be operated periodically to allow regeneration of the adhesion column after each separation. As a result, the manipulated input is chosen as the sampling interval during which material is removed from …

Deformation And Failure Modes Of Adhesively Bonded Elastic Layers, Alfred Crosby, Kenneth R. Shull, Hamed Lakrout, Costantino Creton Feb 2000

Deformation And Failure Modes Of Adhesively Bonded Elastic Layers, Alfred Crosby, Kenneth R. Shull, Hamed Lakrout, Costantino Creton

Alfred Crosby

Adhesively bonded elastic layers with thicknesses that are small relative to their lateral dimensions are used in a wide variety of applications. The mechanical response of the compliant layer when a normal stress is imposed across its thickness is determined by the effects of lateral constraints, which are characterized by the ratio of the lateral dimensions of the layer to its thickness. From this degree of confinement and from the material properties of the compliant layer, we predict three distinct deformation modes: (1) edge crack propagation, (2) internal crack propagation, and (3) cavitation. The conditions conductive for each mode are …

Small-Angle Neutron Scattering Study Of Associative Triblocks In Microemulsion Solutions, Surita Bhatia, J. Lal, W. B. Russel Jan 2000

Small-Angle Neutron Scattering Study Of Associative Triblocks In Microemulsion Solutions, Surita Bhatia, J. Lal, W. B. Russel

Surita Bhatia

Small-angle neutron scattering was used to study the interactions between AOT/water/decane microemulsions and poly(ethylene oxide)-polyisoprene-poly(ethylene oxide) triblocks. The interdroplet spacing seems to be independent of molecular weight and polymer concentration. Scattering experiments on the polyisoprene layer yield a high q exponent of −1.6 ± 0.1, indicating that the layer is swollen by decane.

Soil Gas Transport Above A Jet Fuel/Solvent Spill At Plattsburgh Air Force Base, Erich S. Hinlein, David W. Ostendorf, Alan J. Lutenegger, Shawn P. Kelley Jan 2000

Soil Gas Transport Above A Jet Fuel/Solvent Spill At Plattsburgh Air Force Base, Erich S. Hinlein, David W. Ostendorf, Alan J. Lutenegger, Shawn P. Kelley

Erich S Hinlein

We calibrate a stoichiometrically coupled soil gas diffusion model with spatially resolved observations of oxygen, carbon dioxide, total hydrocarbon, and trichloroethylene vapor concentrations in the unsaturated zone above a weathered jet fuel/solvent spill at Plattsburgh Air Force Base in upstate New York. The calibration suggests that aerobic microorganisms in the capillary fringe degrade jet fuel vapor at a steady rate of 9.5 μg hydrocarbons (m−2 s−1). The solvent does not degrade in the fringe, however, and the model and data estimate a steady evaporation rate of 1.2×10−2 μg TCE (m−2 s−1). Barometric pumping slightly alters the steady concentration profile at …
