The recruitment and the retention of female undergraduate and graduate students into engineering courses is discussed. A similar challenge lies in recruiting female faculty member from the limited pool of candidates in several fields at most universities. It is found that about half the females who were hired did not stay at the university. It is suggested that programs should be introduced to encourage mentoring and career development as such improvements would benefit all faculty members both female and male.

This paper reports on the findings of a national survey of the library services available at Engineering News Record’s Top 500 Designs Firms. In mid-October 2002 a survey was mailed to all 500 firms. The survey was in two parts. One part was to be completed by a principal in the firm. The second part was to be completed by the degreed librarian (holding a Masters in Library Science or its equivalent) if the firm employed one. The return rate was 21.8% (n=109). The findings indicated that 74.4% of responding design firms do not employ a degreed librarian. In …

BACKGROUND Higher education in engineering and technical fields should prepare graduates to take on the increasingly challenging roles required of the engineering profession. Engineering graduates are expected to be responsible for their own personal and professional development. In view of this, the German Malaysian Institute (GMI), an established technical education provider in Malaysia, has adopted Problem-based learning (PBL) as its innovative approach. The main objective is to prepare technologists and industrial workers who are well-grounded with soft skills and abilities. This paper outlines the University's involvement with industry based manufacturing projects, and how this has lead to the recent establishment of postgraduate and undergraduate mechatronics degrees. The nature of the industrial projects is described with examples of specific problems, test equipment and experimental rigs given. This work can be used to explain the reasons for the design of the mechatronics courses at Wollongong. A new teaching methodology particularly suitable for mechatronic's education is also discussed.

The social implications of a wide variety of technologies are the subject matter of the IEEE Society on Social Implications of Technology (SSIT). This paper reviews the SSIT’s contributions since the Society’s founding in 1982, and surveys the outlook for certain key technologies that may have significant social impacts in the future. Military and security technologies, always of significant interest to SSIT, may become more autonomous with less human intervention, and this may have both good and bad consequences. We examine some current trends such as mobile, wearable, and pervasive computing, and find both dangers and opportunities in these trends. …

The Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (FKE) teaching and learning processes was certified to ISO 9001:2000 and now seeks the Engineering Accreditation Council of Malaysia (EAC) approval. One of FKE’s top management commitment is to ensure the programme accreditation requirements are met. EAC adopts American Accreditation Board of Engineering and Technology 2000 (ABET) principles which promote outcome based education (OBE) learning process.
