"The purpose of this investigation was the design and fabrication of a machine to bond metal to metal using the inertia method of friction welding. This method of bonding is considered far superior to the heretofore employed friction welding processes as will be explained later. The inertia method controls the energy imparted to the weld by using a flywheel which has been brought to a state of predetermined kinetic energy due to rotation.
