Recommended Procedure For The Computation Of Rights Of Way, Leon Hershkowitz Jan 1949

Recommended Procedure For The Computation Of Rights Of Way, Leon Hershkowitz

Professional Degree Theses

"This thesis sets forth a recommended procedure for the computation of areas included in "rights of way," using the principle of double meridian distances.

For a considerable number of years, it has been the opinion of the author that steps should be taken to arrive at some form of standardization in the procedures necessary in the computation of areas involving right of way and to more or less standardize legal descriptions pertaining thereto.

One need only examine the records of the various County Recorders in one particular state or in different states and he would be entirely convinced that such …

Research Investigation Of Seepage Control For Dams And Levees, Robert Raymond Brookshire Jan 1949

Research Investigation Of Seepage Control For Dams And Levees, Robert Raymond Brookshire

Professional Degree Theses

"The problems of a century old levee system have provided excellent research for the Corp of Engineers and others in the design and construction of earth dams for flood control, navigation and multi-purpose projects. A special problem on which valuable knowledge has been gained is that of seepage control. The experiences obtained in recent years have been supplemented by theoretical developments in the field of soil mechanics, but it is believed that considerable information will be gained on seepage control from further investigation and experience.

The safety factor to prevent failure from seepage is believed to be the most critical …

The Theory Of Limit Design As Applied To The Design Of A Continuous Beam Over Three Supports, Robert F. Davidson Jan 1949

The Theory Of Limit Design As Applied To The Design Of A Continuous Beam Over Three Supports, Robert F. Davidson

Masters Theses

"The theory of Limit Design is the application of the theory of Plasticity to the estimation of the actual carrying capacity of a structure. In this theory, as it is applied to statistically indeterminate structures, the areas of most unfavorable stress are allowed to be stressed beyond the yield point and into the plastic range of stress. It was formerly held that, by assuming elastic behavior, all questions of strength of materials that concern the Structural Engineer were capable of solution. However, it is now becoming recognized, from actual measurements of deformations of structures and from tests carried to near …

Analysis Of The Transit Traverse Survey Method Of The United States Department Of Interior, Geological Survey, Edward John Kimmick Jan 1949

Analysis Of The Transit Traverse Survey Method Of The United States Department Of Interior, Geological Survey, Edward John Kimmick

Masters Theses

"This thesis was undertaken to ascertain the feasibility of incorporating the United States Geological Survey methods of surveying and computing into a course of study in the Civil Engineering curriculum. It has been the author's opinion that a course of study could be tendered, as a definite project, which incorporates fundamental surveying and advanced surveying. The author's planned course of study was a method of third order transit traverse survey streamlining the method used by the United States Geological Survey. The time element and weather were the essential factors in the planning. In the advanced surveying course there are eighteen …

Aerodynamic Research For An Improved Rotor Control System On Helicopters, Delmar Wallace Breuer Jan 1949

Aerodynamic Research For An Improved Rotor Control System On Helicopters, Delmar Wallace Breuer

Masters Theses

"Since the author has always been interested in Aeronautical Engineering, and in particular, rotary-winged-aircraft, the problem of research for aerodynamic improvement of rotary-wing control systems was chosen. This problem was suggested by the Army Aircorps Officials of Wright-Patterson Field of Dayton, Ohio as being a valuable and practical problem for the government. It is also valuable and practical for the author since it follows his general course of undergraduate study and since it fits closely into the field for which he is preparing himself...The requirement with which the author is most concerned is the design system for the producing of …

Efficiency Of Various Types Of Reinforcement In Controlling Opening Of Cracks In Concrete Pavements, Frederick Richard Heartz Jan 1949

Efficiency Of Various Types Of Reinforcement In Controlling Opening Of Cracks In Concrete Pavements, Frederick Richard Heartz

Masters Theses

"To date very little work has been done on the subject of the amount of crack opening for different loads on concrete pavement. It is a known fact that these cracks must be held together sufficiently to have aggregate interlocking action if the pavement is to transfer loads from one edge of a crack to the other. The maximum permissable [sic] opening has been set at .027 inches by the Highway Research Board. The author has attempted in this investigations (1) to determine the effect of different spacing and different sizes of longitudinal and transverse wires in controlling crack opening …

The Establishment And Analysis Of A Triangulation System For The Teaching Of Advanced Surveying, Philip Blaine Newlin Jan 1949

The Establishment And Analysis Of A Triangulation System For The Teaching Of Advanced Surveying, Philip Blaine Newlin

Masters Theses

"The first thought of establishing a triangulation system for the University of Arizona student work was conceived early in the fall of 1947, when the author first learned that he would be in charge of the advanced surveying field parties during the spring semester. These men were to be instructed in the accepted manner of conducting surveys of higher order. This would include the measuring of a base line of second or first order accuracy, the turning of horizontal angles with this same degree of accuracy, the determination of the azimuth of the lines by astronomical observations, the running of …

A Correlation Of Formulas For The Flow Of Fluids In Pipes, John Gorman Duba Jan 1949

A Correlation Of Formulas For The Flow Of Fluids In Pipes, John Gorman Duba

Masters Theses

"At present there exist two quite distinct fields in fluid flow in pipes, the one in water supply and the other in the petroleum industry. It is the purpose of this paper to discuss the various pipeline flow formulas as used in both fields and to correlate the exponential type formula which is much used in practice with the Nikuradse curves obtained in the laboratory"--A Brief Historical Review, page 5.

Design Of A Wind Tunnel For The Missouri School Of Mines And Metallurgy, William E. Speece Jan 1949

Design Of A Wind Tunnel For The Missouri School Of Mines And Metallurgy, William E. Speece

Masters Theses

"For some time there has been a need for a wind tunnel at the School of Mines for experimental work in the Civil and Mechanical Engineering Departments. With the expanding program and the possibility of establishing an Aeronautical Engineering School here, the need will be even more pronounced. So the problem will be of definite practical value. It was the original idea to design a small tunnel, build the tunnel, and to run a series of smoke tests on various structural models. However, after discussing the possibility of such a problem with school authorities, it was decided that if a …

Interrelationship Of Transverse Anchorage And Adhesive Bond In Welded Wire Reinforcement, Alan Arthur Becker Jan 1949

Interrelationship Of Transverse Anchorage And Adhesive Bond In Welded Wire Reinforcement, Alan Arthur Becker

Masters Theses

"...Welded Wire Reinforcement Fabric has been applied only to certain "light types" of reinforced concrete construction. It has not as yet been applied as main tension reinforcement for most concrete structures, mainly due to the fact that a thorough investigation of the potentialities and possibilities of welded wire fabric has not as yet been conducted. It is expected that the data collected in this investigation coupled with data collected in similar investigations performed at the Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy will furnish the basis for a structural and economic comparison between welded wire fabric and ordinary reinforcing bars. The …
