An investigation into chip breaker designs which will result in the proper chip control is presented in this thesis. The investigation of the premise that chip breakers placed roughly normal to the direction of chip flow would have the greatest likelihood of breaking the chip, was simplified by the use of chip flow angle equations. After the accuracy of these equations was verified, it was possible to construct the chip breaker face at a ninety degree angle to the chip flow direction.

The multiple choice integer programming problem is one for which practical applications frequently arise. A computational procedure which optimally solves problems of this structure is developed by the author. The proposed procedure takes advantage of the particular characteristics of different types of problems within the multiple choice class. The method is primarily a branch and bound procedure which implicitly enumerates all of the possible combinations.

The problem of balancing an assembly line has been facilitated by a number of analytic methods for which computer programs are available. The feasibility of using the variable element time balancing algorithm was investigated in reference to the task of setting up an assembly line type operation for the reconditioning of units which are disassembled, repaired, and returned to inventory and subsequent use.

A method is developed to assist the producer in controlling the product quality where monthly auditing standards are imposed after final inspection. The control involves monitoring the numer of demerits accumulated by the auditing department and finding the risk that the product will be rated out of control at the end of the month. Thus the method is intended to be employed in addition to present control techniques.

Optimal producing procedures for the facilities-location assignment problem have been impractical because of the long computer solution times required for even the relatively small problems. Two new algorithms are presented in this paper and their improved capabilities are demonstrated. The responses of these algorithms to several input parameters are also investigated.

In this thesis, the characteristics of various sampling plans and control charts are modeled by GERT. Most of the sampling models provide information about the probabilities of accepting and rejecting a lot, the expected number and variance of units passed until the lot is accepted as well as rejected. The control chart models are used to compute the expected number of points under control until an out of control condition occurs.

This study was conducted for the purpose of evaluating various safety stock policies in a dynamic, multi-echelon inventory system. The study environment is set in a four level multi-echelon production system. Demands on the system are forecast over a twenty period planning horizon and are treated in the model as deterministic. Safety stock is required to protect against lead time variation which is assumed to be distributed in a Poisson manner. All costs are assumed known with the exception of stockout cost.
