Recent Advances In Randomized Methods For Big Data Optimization, Jie Liu Jan 2018

Recent Advances In Randomized Methods For Big Data Optimization, Jie Liu

Theses and Dissertations

In this thesis, we discuss and develop randomized algorithms for big data problems. In particular, we study the finite-sum optimization with newly emerged variance- reduction optimization methods (Chapter 2), explore the efficiency of second-order information applied to both convex and non-convex finite-sum objectives (Chapter 3) and employ the fast first-order method in power system problems (Chapter 4).In Chapter 2, we propose two variance-reduced gradient algorithms – mS2GD and SARAH. mS2GD incorporates a mini-batching scheme for improving the theoretical complexity and practical performance of SVRG/S2GD, aiming to minimize a strongly convex function represented as the sum of an average of ...

Model-Based Curvilinear Network Extraction And Tracking Toward Quantitative Analysis Of Biopolymer Networks, Ting Xu Jan 2016

Model-Based Curvilinear Network Extraction And Tracking Toward Quantitative Analysis Of Biopolymer Networks, Ting Xu

Theses and Dissertations

Curvilinear biopolymer networks pervade living systems. They are routinely imaged by fluorescence microscopy to gain insight into their structural, mechanical, and dynamic properties. Image analysis can facilitate understanding the mechanisms of their formation and their biological functions from a quantitative viewpoint. Due to the variability in network geometry, topology and dynamics as well as often low resolution and low signal-to-noise ratio in images, segmentation and tracking networks from these images is challenging. In this dissertation, we propose a complete framework for extracting the geometry and topology of curvilinear biopolymer networks, and also tracking their dynamics from multi-dimensional images. The proposed ...

Scalable Synchronization With Mindicators, Logan Mcnamara, Yujie Liu May 2013

Scalable Synchronization With Mindicators, Logan Mcnamara, Yujie Liu

Eckardt Scholars Projects

The Mindicator is a shared object that stores one value for each thread in a system, and can return the minimum of all thread’s values in constant time. In this paper, we explore applications of the Mindicator in synchronization algorithms. We introduce three new algorithms, designed for scalable Read-Copy-Update (RCU), fair Readers-Writer locking, and Group Mutual Exclusion. Experimental evaluation shows these algorithms to perform well while avoiding contention.

Integrated Learning For Goal-Driven Autonomy, Ulit Jaidee Jan 2013

Integrated Learning For Goal-Driven Autonomy, Ulit Jaidee

Theses and Dissertations

Goal-Driven Autonomy (GDA) is an online planning framework that focuses on the integration of planning, execution and goal reasoning. Given a goal, a GDA agent generates a plan to pursue the goal. In addition, by using its expectations, the agent reasons about what the next observed state should be when the plan's actions are executed. If the expectation does not match the observed state, the GDA agent is able to suggest a new goal to be pursued. In most GDA research, knowledge is handcrafted and later fed into the GDA agent by humans who are experts in a particular ...

A New Superconductor Memory Scheme Using Single Fluxoids To Store Information, Charles E. Heckman Jan 1973

A New Superconductor Memory Scheme Using Single Fluxoids To Store Information, Charles E. Heckman

Theses and Dissertations

A study is presented of the potentials of a new proposed type of superconductor memory scheme using individual fluxoids to store binary information. Two different superconducting memory schemes are presented: 1) similar to the T-bar structure used in bubble technology, and 2) a completely new memory scheme.
