Life-Cycle Environmental Assessment Of A1010 And Carbon Steel Girder Bridges, Cheng Yuan Jan 2020

Life-Cycle Environmental Assessment Of A1010 And Carbon Steel Girder Bridges, Cheng Yuan

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis presents life-cycle environmental assessment (LCEA) for carbon and A1010 steel girder bridges. This thesis setup a quantitative life-cycle environmental impacts model to help decision makers to choose the appropriate material for steel girder bridges under different environmental conditions. The overall LCEA process is structured according to ISO 14040 and ISO 14042 which are talking about the life-cycle impact assessment of structures. The LCEA process includes the product category rules development, life-cycle inventory analysis and life-cycle impact analysis. Mote-Carlo simulation is used for inventory and impact analysis and Multi Criteria Decision Aid (MCDA) method is used to determine the ...

Comparitive Analysis In Non-Linear Model Of Pre-Stressed Concrete Beam, Xingjian Wang May 2019

Comparitive Analysis In Non-Linear Model Of Pre-Stressed Concrete Beam, Xingjian Wang

Theses and Dissertations

The author presents a detailed procedure to model a pre-stressed concrete beam in ATENA Engineering and ABAQUS, considering a series of load cases. One of the main purposes of the thesis is to investigate the time effort required and the additional knowledge gained by modeling techniques of increasing accuracy, and based on different software packages. The two software packages differ in several substantial ways: mechanical models available, visualization, time costs, primary fields of application, and models for concrete cracking. This effort is part of a larger initiative with contributors from the USA and Europe to study the value of advanced ...

Model Study Of The Static And Cyclic Lateral Capacity Of Finned Piles, Kepha Odhambo Abongo Jan 2019

Model Study Of The Static And Cyclic Lateral Capacity Of Finned Piles, Kepha Odhambo Abongo

Theses and Dissertations

The main objective of this thesis is to examine systematically the proposed improved performance of finned piles over monopiles when subjected to lateral static and cyclic loading. In order to achieve this objective, both physical and numerical simulations were conducted on finned and monopile and outcomes were analyzed for design recommendations. The physical tests were performed on scaled model piles at 1:100 reductions of typical wind turbine monopile foundations. The cyclic lateral load tests were conducted on the scaled down foundation models at 1g condition. Cyclic tests were conducted to evaluate the long-term performance of the finned piles under ...

Fire Resistance Ramifications Of High-Strength A615 And A706 Rebar, Christopher Irwin Aug 2018

Fire Resistance Ramifications Of High-Strength A615 And A706 Rebar, Christopher Irwin

Theses and Dissertations

Fire is one of the most serious threats that a structure may experience during its service life. Thermal expansion, extreme temperature gradients, and degrading material properties can lead to structural failure. Structural fire resistance is addressed in building codes, and has grown more robust over the years. Past research has studied normal strength (Grade 60) rebar, but information regarding high strength rebar is incomplete. To ensure that the current standards of practice accurately predict the behavior of hot-rolled, high strength rebar at elevated temperature, an experimental study was conducted at Lehigh University. Samples of #8 ASTM A615 Grades 60, 75 ...

Defect Growth Characterization In Modern Rail Steel, Sena Kizildemir May 2018

Defect Growth Characterization In Modern Rail Steel, Sena Kizildemir

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis investigates the fatigue characterization of modern head-hardened rails, with a specific focus on detail (i.e. transverse) fracture. This study provides necessary information to determine a safe and economically viable rail inspection interval.Safe inspection interval has previously been established for legacy, i.e. non-head-hardened rails. The head hardening process, which evolved over the past several decades, has been designed to improve rail wear resistance by increasing hardness. Unfortunately, increasing hardness, which is related to strength, typically results in reduction of toughness and fatigue life. This means that while improved wear resistance can extend the wear life of ...

Uncertainty Quantification For Naval Ships And The Optimal Adaptation Of Bridges To Climate Change, Alysson Mondoro Jan 2018

Uncertainty Quantification For Naval Ships And The Optimal Adaptation Of Bridges To Climate Change, Alysson Mondoro

Theses and Dissertations

Repairing and adapting existing structures and infrastructure is essential for maintaining the functionality of a transportation network and the flow of people, goods, and ideas across a region. However, structures are vulnerable to extreme events, such as hurricanes and floods, and continuous deterioration, due to exposure to corrosive environments and cyclic loading. The occurrence of extreme events may be nonstationary over the service life of the structures, leading to uncertain future loading conditions on the structure. Continuous deterioration, due to corrosion or fatigue, changes the capacity of the structure to resist loads over time. Repair and adaptation measures may be ...

Probabilistic Seismic Performance Assessment Of Low-Ductility Concentrically Braced Frames In East Coast U.S., Xin Chu Jan 2017

Probabilistic Seismic Performance Assessment Of Low-Ductility Concentrically Braced Frames In East Coast U.S., Xin Chu

Theses and Dissertations

The overall objective of this dissertation is to advance knowledge on the seismic behavior and performance of low-ductility concentrically braced frames (CBF) in the mid-Atlantic east coast region of the United States (ECUS). Low-ductility CBFs in the ECUS are usually designed with a Response Modification Factor R equal to 3 and without seismic detailing to promote ductile behavior. While low-ductility CBFs constitute a large portion of the building inventory in low to moderate seismic zones of the United States such as the ECUS, there is a lack of understanding of their seismic response, and more importantly, whether they provide satisfactory ...
