Trajectory Planning Of Non-Gravity Aligned (Nga) Segments In Arbitrary Directions For Large Scale Additive Manufacturing Of Metals (Lsamm), James Logan Mcneil May 2022

Trajectory Planning Of Non-Gravity Aligned (Nga) Segments In Arbitrary Directions For Large Scale Additive Manufacturing Of Metals (Lsamm), James Logan Mcneil

Doctoral Dissertations

Traditionally, slicing and path planning are done along the gravity-aligned direction of a part, causing more complex geometrical shapes to have unsupported overhangs. Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing (WAAM) has typically handled overhangs with a robotic part positioner; but, to extend the current capabilities of LSAMM, a new framework for slicing and building parts out of gravity alignment has been developed. The proposed framework focuses on segmenting more complex geometrical parts into gravity-aligned (GA), non-gravity aligned (NGA), and transition zones to support tool-path generation. GA and NGA segments can be planned with traditional slicing techniques, but the NGA tool-paths must be …

Effect Of Indentation On Sandwich Composite Structure Mechanical Behavior, Marius V. Jatulis Mar 2022

Effect Of Indentation On Sandwich Composite Structure Mechanical Behavior, Marius V. Jatulis

Master's Theses

Composite sandwich structures are prevalent in engineering applications where high strength to weight ratios are critical. A composite sandwich includes the addition of a core material between two composite face sheets to increase ultimate stress in compression and bending loading cases. The performance of many composite sandwich structure configurations is well understood in the undamaged case. This analysis examines a type of damage, low velocity indentation, and determines the effect on mechanical behavior. The scope of the analysis includes manufacturing sandwich composite structures, creating indentation in the composite, and testing the sandwich composite structure. The mechanical behavior of the composite …

Vibration Behavior In Modulated Tool Path (Mtp) Turning, Ryan William Copenhaver Dec 2020

Vibration Behavior In Modulated Tool Path (Mtp) Turning, Ryan William Copenhaver

Doctoral Dissertations

This project studies the process dynamics and surface finish effects of modulated tool path (MTP) turning. In MTP turning, a small amplitude (typically less than 0.5 mm), low frequency oscillation (typically less than 10 Hz) is superimposed on the feed motion by the machine controller to intentionally segment the traditionally long, continuous chips. The basic science to be examined is the vibration behavior of this special case of interrupted cutting, which is not turning because the chip formation is intentionally discontinuous and is not milling because the time-dependent chip geometry is defined by the oscillatory feed motion, not the trochoidal …

An Affordable And Portable Palpable System For Sensing Breast Tissue Abnormalities, Cody J. Clarke Sep 2020

An Affordable And Portable Palpable System For Sensing Breast Tissue Abnormalities, Cody J. Clarke

Montview Journal of Research & Scholarship

Due to the high cost of equipment and lack of trained personnel, manual palpation is a preferred alternative breast examination technique over mammography. The process involves a thorough search pattern using trained fingers and applying adequate pressure, with the objective of identifying solid masses from the surrounding breast tissue. However, palpation requires skills that must be obtained through adequate training in order to ensure proper diagnosis. Consequently, palpation performance and reporting techniques have been inconsistent. Automating the palpation technique would optimize the performance of self-breast examination, optimize clinical breast examinations (CBE), and enable the visualization of breast abnormalities as well …

Universal Bike Suspension Design, Ernesto Huerta, Gregory Ryan Ritter, Chris Michael Fedor, Michael Wu May 2019

Universal Bike Suspension Design, Ernesto Huerta, Gregory Ryan Ritter, Chris Michael Fedor, Michael Wu

Mechanical Engineering

Cal Poly Bike Builders (CPBB) is a student club at Cal Poly helping students design and fabricate their own bicycles. Currently, club members build rigid frames and mountain bikes with only front-suspension–commonly referred to as a “hardtail”. As more students join the club, interest grows in building full-suspension mountain bikes (FSMTB). Designing and manufacturing a mountain bike rear-suspension system requires a diverse skillset and a substantial time commitment. As a result, individual efforts building FSMTB have proven unsuccessful. The scope of this project is to develop a defined method and necessary tools such that all CPBB members can efficiently build …

Investigation Of Design, Manufacture, Analysis, And Test Of A Composite Connecting Rod Under Compression, Thomas Juhl Rohrbach Mar 2019

Investigation Of Design, Manufacture, Analysis, And Test Of A Composite Connecting Rod Under Compression, Thomas Juhl Rohrbach

Master's Theses

Composite materials hold great potential for the replacement of traditional materials in machines utilized on a daily basis. One such example is within an engine block assembly where massive components inherently reduce the efficiency of the system they constitute. By replacing metal elements such as connecting rods, cylinder caps, or a crank shaft with composite alternatives, a significant increase in performance may be achieved with respect to mechanical strength, thermal stability, and durability, while also reducing mass. Exploration of this technology applied to a connecting rod geometry was investigated through a combination of process development, manufacturing, numerical analysis and testing. …

Stair Climbing Hand Truck, James Mcpherson Jan 2019

Stair Climbing Hand Truck, James Mcpherson

All Undergraduate Projects

Abstract

Getting a heavy object up a flight of stairs usually requires a team of two or more people. Even with a team of people, the task is often still difficult, dangerous, and possibly insurmountable by one person. This problem is especially prevalent in for those who are moving into apartment complexes. Most apartment complexes have many buildings with two or more floors of living quarters, and elevators are often missing. This project sought to offer a solution to this problem. The solution in question; a motorized hand-truck with 2, trigonal planar pinwheels in place of the stock wheels. The …

Additive Manufacturing Powder Removal, Madison A. Lignell, Tyler W. Laird, Kurt K. Reed Jun 2018

Additive Manufacturing Powder Removal, Madison A. Lignell, Tyler W. Laird, Kurt K. Reed

Mechanical Engineering

Metal powder-bed fusion is an additive manufacturing process which enables the creation of unique shapes in metal parts that would otherwise be difficult, expensive, or impossible to machine. Metallic powder is melted and fused together by either a laser or electron beam to produce parts quickly. The excess powder covers newly printed parts and can be difficult to remove from small internal features. The scope of this project is to design a device that effectively removes the powder from newly printed parts safely, while reclaiming as much powder as possible for reuse. The solution for this project must be able …

Pin Router Duplicator Base, Matthew Tebo Jan 2017

Pin Router Duplicator Base, Matthew Tebo

All Undergraduate Projects

The idea for the following project came from the Lean Manufacturing class that is offered at Central Washington University. In this class the manufacturing processes is demonstrated through the production of guitar kits. A problem with the class is that the CNC machine gets backed up causing a bottleneck in the production line. The solution to this problem was to make a pin router duplicator. A pin router duplicator is a device that allows the operator to trace a finished part with a pin while a router mimics its movements, cutting a new part. The component that is looked into …

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications

Collaborative engineering is the practical application of collaboration sciences to the engineering domain. In today’s highly connected technology-driven economy, the production industry must rely on the best practices of collaborative engineering to stay competitive when designing, manufacturing, and operating complex machines, processes, and systems on a global scale. Despite its importance, collaborative engineering is currently more of a practiced art than a scientific discipline. A better understanding of how engineers should collaborate with all stakeholders to accomplish complex tasks that fulfill our increasing social responsibilities is a grand challenge. However, because we currently lack well-defined sciences of human collaboration, we …

Electronic Commerce Negotiation In A Supply Chain Via Constraint Evaluation, R. Wilhelm, B. Chu, R. Sun Jan 2005

Electronic Commerce Negotiation In A Supply Chain Via Constraint Evaluation, R. Wilhelm, B. Chu, R. Sun

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications

Negotiation is of critical importance in e-commerce applications where the supply chain is dynamic and reconfiguring. In this research supply chain negotiation problems are addressed as constraint-satisfaction problems. In general each negotiation is handled in the largest scope possible to avoid the suboptimality that can result from many local solutions. This global approach, however, must be balanced with time constraints that apply in e-commerce supply chain execution. In this paper, we describe a new approach for e-commerce supply chain negotiation via constraint evaluation. As well, results from prototype software, distributed across the internet, are discussed. Beyond the general formulation, we …
