In this study, a bio-inspired and micromachined volumetric flow sensor is presented for the biomedical application of an intravenous system. This was realized by integrating two sensing units with different sensitivities on one silicon die to achieve a large dynamic range of the volumetric flow rate. The sensor was …

Three-Component Composite Phase-Change Material For Thermal Regulation, Bidisha Ojha Dec 2022

Three-Component Composite Phase-Change Material For Thermal Regulation, Bidisha Ojha

McKelvey School of Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Phase change materials can increase the efficiency of many energy-intensive applications, such as solar power plants, solar heating and cooling systems, heat recovery systems, photovoltaic electricity systems, and Earth satellite systems. In several proposed thermal management systems for high power electronic equipment, PCMs change phase and absorb latent heat at peak energy loads during operation, then dissipate this energy later to prevent overheating. More specifically, composite PCM’s, consisting of an organic material (e.g., paraffin) and an inorganic material (e.g., metallic alloys or salt hydrates), provide a superior balance of thermal conductivity and latent heat for thermal management. Organic PCMs have …

Machine Learning Approach To Investigate Ev Battery Characteristics, Shayan Falahatdoost Dec 2022

Machine Learning Approach To Investigate Ev Battery Characteristics, Shayan Falahatdoost

Major Papers

The main factor influencing an electric vehicle’s range is its battery. Battery electric vehicles experience driving range reduction in low temperatures. This range reduction results from the heating demand for the cabin and recuperation limits by the braking system. Due to the lack of an internal combustion engine-style heat source, electric vehicles' heating system demands a significant amount of energy. This energy is supplied by the battery and results in driving range reduction. Moreover, Due to the battery's low temperature in cold weather, the charging process through recuperation is limited. This limitation of recuperation is caused by the low reaction …

Engineering The Spectrum Of Near-Field Thermal Radiation, Saman Zare Dec 2022

Engineering The Spectrum Of Near-Field Thermal Radiation, Saman Zare

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Thermal emission observed at sub-wavelength distances from the thermal source is referred to as near-field thermal radiation. Thermal radiation in the near-field regime can exceed Planck’s blackbody limit by orders of magnitude and be quasi-monochromatic. Due to these unique properties, near-field thermal radiation is very promising for several thermal management and energy harvesting applications. Many of these applications, such as nanogap thermophotovoltaics and thermal rectification, require near-field spectra that are not found among natural materials. Artificial metamaterials, which are engineered at the sub-wavelength scale, have been theoretically proposed for tuning the spectrum of near-field thermal radiation. However, engineering the near-field …

Journal of Materials Exploration and Findings (JMEF)

The oil and gas industry generally uses a piping system to drain fluids. Even though the pipes used have been well designed, the use of pipes as a means of fluid transportation still provides the possibility of failure that can occur at any time, one of which is due to uniform corrosion. The use of standard Risk Based Inspection (RBI) according to the API RBI 581 document has been widely used to anticipate potential failures to pipe components. The use of standard RBI can reduce the risk of failure significantly. Because the standard RBI considers the component risk value to …
