Assessment Of Introduction To Engineering And Problem-Solving Course, Joni E. Spurlin, Jerome P. Lavelle, Mary Clare Robbins, Sarah A. Rajala

At North Carolina State University, the freshmen’s first course in engineering is E101, Introduction to Engineering and Problem-Solving. It is offered each fall to over 1,100 first year engineering students. In an effort to continuously improve the course, we put into place a plan to assess the course's learning outcomes. Assessment data collected in fall 2001 and fall 2002 through surveys, rubrics, and class assignments were evaluated to determine how well students met learning outcomes related to communication, teamwork, and problem-solving. This paper presents the assessment methods used in this course and provides examples of how the assessment findings were …

Enhancement of the Global Perspective for Engineering Students by Providing an International Experience
The Öresund Region: Eastern Denmark and southernmost Sweden constitute the Öresund Region (Öresund). It is an official "EU Crossborder Region" and has special EU grants. It has about 3. 5 million inhabitants and is the most densely populated area in Scandinavia. In the year 2000 a bridge was opened across the sound that separates Denmark and Sweden. This event is often regarded as the starting point for the crossborder region. It is a high-tech region with a number of successful companies ranging from small startups to large international companies. There are eleven research hospitals and seven science parks, some of …

Enhancement of the Global Perspective for Engineering Students by Providing an International Experience
There are many driving forces for the preparation of engineering students for international practice. Engineers must design and develop products for multinational markets. Materials and components must be sought worldwide to be competitive. Engineers may practice directly in foreign countries for part of a career. Multinational company engineers must work with international teams. Several basic elements are needed to prepare engineers for international practice: foreign language proficiency, cultural background development, international business knowledge, and international technical knowledge. Further detailed descriptions of what is needed are provided by the Institute for International Education and the US Foreign Service Officer Program. Some …

Enhancement of the Global Perspective for Engineering Students by Providing an International Experience
Historically, the academic life in Romania as well as in the other Central and East European countries had strong connections with Western Europe and some connections with the rest of the world. These connections were almost entirely forbidden by the communist soviet type political power imposed to these countries, following the Second World War. The 1989 anticommunist revolution in Central and East Europe opened the way for re-establishing contacts with the western World, offering Romanians and particularly to the students of the "POLITEHNICA" University in Bucharest, opportunities to get International Experience. Due, mainly, to the activity of some promoters, without …

Enhancement of the Global Perspective for Engineering Students by Providing an International Experience
When some 30 European ministers of Education signed a common declaration in Bologna in June 1999 they initiated a process that will lead to fundamental changes in the architecture of European higher education. The stated goals are to create a European Area of Higher Education characterised by improved mobility, international competitiveness and readable and comparable degrees. Some see the declaration as an effort to bring European education closer to an Anglo-Saxon model. This paper analyses some possible consequences for Engineering Education in particular and gives a description of how different European states have interpreted and implemented the principles of the …
