Exploring The Relationship Between Designing And Composing With An Analog Synthesizer, Felix Morrissey
Honors College
For my electrical engineering capstone, I designed and built a handheld analog synthesizer. This analog synthesizer is a musical instrument which uses electrical analog components to generate sounds with properties based on the user’s input. My goal when creating this device was to maximize its utility while remaining within the scope of the capstone project. After the synthesizer was built, I wrote and recorded several pieces of music which each utilized the synthesizer prominently. The aim of this process was to be able to explore the relationship between an instrument’s design and the quality of the music produced utilizing it. …

Learning Approach For Fast Approximate Matrix Factorizations, Haiyan Yu
Learning Approach For Fast Approximate Matrix Factorizations, Haiyan Yu
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Efficiently computing an (approximate) orthonormal basis and low-rank approximation for the input data X plays a crucial role in data analysis. One of the most efficient algorithms for such tasks is the randomized algorithm, which proceeds by computing a projection XA with a random projection matrix A of much smaller size, and then computing the orthonormal basis as well as low-rank factorizations of the tall matrix XA. While a random matrix A is the de facto choice, in this work, we improve upon its performance by utilizing a learning approach to find an adaptive projection matrix A from a set …

The Development Of An Inexpensive Alternative To Industry Solar Simulators, Raines A. Vanhuss
OUR Journal: ODU Undergraduate Research Journal
Solar cells are a prominent renewable energy source used in the twenty-first century. In order for the technology to grow, research lab equipment is needed to measure and characterizes these cells. This report covers solar simulator devices and proposes an alternative design solution to lessen the cost of solar cell lab equipment. Common household light sources were tested by generating I-V characteristics using an amorphous silicon solar cell. The light bulb that generated the best I-V curve was selected and then tested for the optimal distance between the light source and the solar panel. The alternative solar simulator was then …

A Soft-Switched Three-Port Dc-Dc Converter For A Pv/ Battery System, Mohamedelfatih Dosa
All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects
This thesis proposed a soft-switched three-port bidirectional DC-DC converter for managing the power flow of a photovoltaic (PV) and battery system. The proposed converter consists of three ports connected to a PV panel, battery, and load. These three ports are interfaced through the high-frequency transformer and use phase-shift control to achieve soft-switching for all converter switches. Compared with the traditional multiport converters, the proposed three-port converter uses the least number of power switches, and zero-voltage switching (ZVS). Simulation and experimental results validate the design and effectiveness of soft switching and power flow control. The converter can work in different scenarios …

Analysis Of Three-Phase Rectifier Via Three Different Control Methods And Switch Power Loss Comparison, Yichao Wang
All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects
Traditional uncontrolled or phase-controlled rectifiers have the defects of lower power factor and nontrivial higher harmonics which causes the low efficiency of power, bad power quality, and so on. However, PWM rectifiers overcome the drawbacks mentioned above. They reduce the higher harmonics yielding better sinusoidal current on the grid side, achieve unity power factor and bidirectional power flow, and have better dynamic performance. So, it is favored more by academia and widely applied in high-performance power electronics devices. In this paper, the PWM rectifier is analyzed and a comparison of the switch loss on three-phase rectifier using three different control …

To improve the efficiency and accuracy of the power conversion within AC/DC converters, a stable, robust power flow control system with quick response and disturbance rejection ability is desired. This thesis proposes a model-free …
Memristive Architectures And Algorithms For Approximate Graph-Based Inference, Mohammad M.A. Taha
Memristive Architectures And Algorithms For Approximate Graph-Based Inference, Mohammad M.A. Taha
Dissertations and Theses
The goal of this thesis is to design fast, low-power, robust graph-based inference systems. Our approach to this is by using (1) in-memory computing, (2) approximate computing principles, and (3) memristive devices.
This work is motivated by the fact that conventional von Neumann architectures are not efficient for inference applications, mainly due to the data transfer bottleneck. Adding cache memories and using GPUs is a remedy, however, does not eliminate this bottleneck. In-memory computing is an alternative approach that performs all computations inside the memory, thus eliminating the data transfer bottleneck.
The memristor, which is a passive two-terminal device, is …

The growing field of smart textiles could change everyday life, adding an element of interactivity to commonly used items such as clothing and furniture. Smart textiles measure then respond to external stimuli. For scalability in the future, smart textiles must be produced using conventional textile manufacturing craftsmanship. The resulting textile must be durable and comfortable while retaining electrical capabilities. Smart textiles can be fabricating through embroidery, weaving, and knitting using conductive threads. Electronics can also be printed onto textiles. Researchers are also creating higher-order electronics, such as the transistor, on the fiber-level to make the technology in smart textiles as …
Absorptive Reflectionless Filters, Guy Barry Lemire
Absorptive Reflectionless Filters, Guy Barry Lemire
Dissertations and Theses
For many applications requiring some sort of signal filtering or signal conditioning, the filter requirements are usually approached with a single purpose in mind, which is to maximize both passband signal amplitude and stop band signal attenuation to the load with little to no thought given to what happens to the stop band signal energy. Many conventional filters have very poor impedance matching in the stopband resulting in reflected energy or large return loss (S11). This reflected energy can then cause interactions with adjoining system components which do not in general respond well to spurious reflected energy and …

Single Image Reflection Removal Beyond Linearity, Qiang Wen, Yinjie Tan, Jing Qin, Wenxi Liu, Guoqiang Han, Shengfeng He
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Due to the lack of paired data, the training of image reflection removal relies heavily on synthesizing reflection images. However, existing methods model reflection as a linear combination model, which cannot fully simulate the real-world scenarios. In this paper, we inject non-linearity into reflection removal from two aspects. First, instead of synthesizing reflection with a fixed combination factor or kernel, we propose to synthesize reflection images by predicting a non-linear alpha blending mask. This enables a free combination of different blurry kernels, leading to a controllable and diverse reflection synthesis. Second, we design a cascaded network for reflection removal with …

A Novel Cooperative Distributed Secondary Controller For Vsi And Pq Inverters Of Ac Microgrids, F. Doost Mohammadi, H. Keshtkar, A. Dehghan Banadaki, A. Feliachi
Faculty & Staff Scholarship
This paper proposes a novel cooperative secondary control strategy for microgrids which is fully distributed. There is a two-layered coordination, which exists between inverter based DGs of both types, i.e. Voltage Source Inverter (VSI) and Current Source Inverter (CSI), also called PQ inverter. In first layer of the proposed two-layered cooperative control strategy, VSIs will take care of the primary average voltage regulation by implementing the average consensus algorithm (ACA); then in the second layer of control, the PQ inverters will improve the voltage quality of the microgrid while maintaining the average voltage of buses at the same desired level. …

Memory-Aware Scheduling For Fixed Priority Hard Real-Time Computing Systems, Gustavo A. Chaparro-Baquero
Memory-Aware Scheduling For Fixed Priority Hard Real-Time Computing Systems, Gustavo A. Chaparro-Baquero
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
As a major component of a computing system, memory has been a key performance and power consumption bottleneck in computer system design. While processor speeds have been kept rising dramatically, the overall computing performance improvement of the entire system is limited by how fast the memory can feed instructions/data to processing units (i.e. so-called memory wall problem). The increasing transistor density and surging access demands from a rapidly growing number of processing cores also significantly elevated the power consumption of the memory system. In addition, the interference of memory access from different applications and processing cores significantly degrade the …

Silicon Compilation And Test For Dataflow Implementations In Gasp And Click, Swetha Mettala Gilla
Dissertations and Theses
Many modern computer systems are distributed over space. Well-known examples are the Internet of Things and IBM's TrueNorth for deep learning applications. At the Asynchronous Research Center (ARC) at Portland State University we build distributed hardware systems using self-timed computation and delay-insensitive communication. Where appropriate, self-timed hardware operations can reduce average and peak power, energy, latency, and electromagnetic interference. Alternatively, self-timed operations can increase throughput, tolerance to delay variations, scalability, and manufacturability.
The design of complex hardware systems requires design automation and support for test, debug, and product characterization.
This thesis focuses on design compilation and test support for dataflow …

Cross Calibration And Validation Of Landsat 8 Oli And Sentinel 2a Msi, M. M. Farhad
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This work describes a proposed radiometric cross calibration between the Landsat 8 Operational Land Imager (OLI) and Sentinel 2A Multispectral Instrument (MSI) sensors. The cross calibration procedure involves i) correction of the MSI data to account for spectral band differences with the OLI; and ii) correction of BRDF effects in the data from both sensors using a new model accounting for the view zenith/azimuth angles in addition to the solar zenith/view angles. Following application of the spectral and BRDF corrections, standard least-squares linear regression is used to determine the cross calibration gain and offset in each band. Uncertainties related to …

Development Of A Capacitive Photocurrent Scanning Microscope With Carrier Depletion Super-Resolution., Austin Levi Carver
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation discusses the development and refinement of a new two-dimensional imaging technique, funded in part through a NSF MRI equipment development grant. Capacitive-Photocurrent (CPC) spectroscopy allows for the probing of samples without the requirement of free-carrier collection. The CPC technique allows for the studying of various states within a material. With this electronic measurement technique, we developed a scanning technique, scanning-CPC, that provides two-dimensional material property images without requiring environments that must be high-vacuum, humidity-controlled, or temperature-controlled. This new technique also provides two-dimensional, electronic mapping without damaging samples. With this successful result, we then modified an existing resolution improving …

Voltage Controller For Simulating Transition Between Boost –Buck -Boost Converter, Aula Jameel Al-Kamil
Masters Theses
In the present work, a voltage tracking controller is developed for DC-DC Buck-Boost converter using software model. The software developed can track the voltage and the mode of operation (Buck or Boost), which depends on the value of the duty cycle ratio (D). The error between (reference voltage) and output voltage is minimized by using step input as reference. The simulation results show that the designed software controller can successfully track the voltage with low error and with short settling time. The values for the Buck-Boost circuit components, the capacitor and the inductor, are tuned and selected so …

Navigation and control algorithms are often tested in a simulated environment before being deployed in physical systems. Although simulated environments provide a controlled setting to carefully evaluate performance, the designed scenarios are sometimes unrealistically ideal and may unintentionally omit circumstances or unmodeled interactions. This thesis presents the design, implementation, and practical demonstration of a physical testbed that enables the testing of multi-agent autonomous strategies in hardware on a small scale. Testing the algorithms at scale allows real-time exploration of the interaction and performance of both human and autonomous algorithms under non-ideal conditions while avoiding the costs and risks of full-scale, …

Spotlight synthetic aperture radar (SAR) provides a high-resolution remote image formation capability for airborne platforms. SAR image formation processes exploit the amplitude, time, and frequency shifts that occur in the transmitted waveform due to electromagnetic propagation and scattering. These shifts are predictable through the SAR forward model which is dependent on the waveform parameters and emitter flight path. The approach to develop an electronic countermeasure (ECM) system that is founded on the SAR forward model implies that the ECM system should alter the radar's waveform in a manner that produces the same amplitude, time, and frequency shifts that a real …

Analog to Digital Converters bridge the gap between physical world and digital signal processing. Most times analog signals received from the real world needs to be amplified and converted to digital to impart various signal enhancements to the received signal. The digital signal is much suitable to operate on with less noise and well defined logic levels when compared to continuously varying analog signal. Communication systems demand ever-increasing bandwidth which unfortunately has been a huge limitation for present day ADCs. Hence, an architecture which combines the accuracy of a SAR -ADC with the concept of pipelining to increase the bandwidth …
