Piezoresistive Properties Of Ito Strain Sensors Prepared With Controlled Nanoporosity, Otto J. Gregory, Tao You Dec 2003

Piezoresistive Properties Of Ito Strain Sensors Prepared With Controlled Nanoporosity, Otto J. Gregory, Tao You

Chemical Engineering Faculty Publications

A ceramic strain gage based on reactively sputtered indium-tinoxide (ITO) thin films is being developed to monitor the structural integrity of components employed in aerospace propulsion systems operating at temperatures in excess of 1500°C. The hightemperature stability and piezoresistive properties depend to a large extent on the thickness of the active ITO strain elements comprising these ceramic strain gages. Scanning electron microscopy of the thick ITO sensors revealed a partially sintered microstructure consisting of a contiguous network of submicrometer ITO particles with well-defined necks and isolated nanoporosity. It appeared that densification of the ITO particles was retarded during high-temperature exposure …

On The Generalized Borel Transform And Its Application To The Statistical Mechanics Of Macromolecules, Marcelo Marucho, Gustavo A. Carri Dec 2003

On The Generalized Borel Transform And Its Application To The Statistical Mechanics Of Macromolecules, Marcelo Marucho, Gustavo A. Carri

College of Polymer Science and Polymer Engineering

We present a new integral transform called the generalized Borel transform (GBT) and show how to use it to compute distribution functions used to describe the statistical mechanics of macromolecules. For this purpose, we choose the random flight model (RFM) of macromolecules and show that the application of the GBT to this model leads to the exact expression of the polymer propagator (two-point correlation function) from which all the statistical properties of the model can be obtained. We also discuss the mathematical simplicity of the GBT and its applicability to macromolecules with other topologies. (C) 2003 American Institute of Physics.

Rotational Molding Of Acrylonitrile-Butadiene-Styrene Polymers And Blends, Mark Grant Spencer Dec 2003

Rotational Molding Of Acrylonitrile-Butadiene-Styrene Polymers And Blends, Mark Grant Spencer

Theses and Dissertations

The development of acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) resins for use in rotational molding would provide a medium performance material, thus opening doors to new markets for the rotational molding industry. Unfortunately, ABS resins have shown serious problems during the rotational molding process, namely discoloration, bridging, and poor impact strength. It is believed that these effects are due to degradation of the carbon-carbon double bond in the butadiene, through attack by either oxygen or heat. Previous efforts have shown some success in addressing these issues. However, additional improvements are necessary to make ABS resins commercially viable to rotational molders. This study, fourth in …

The Selection Of Materials For Roller Chains From The Perspective Of Manufacturing Process, Rahmat Saptono Dec 2003

The Selection Of Materials For Roller Chains From The Perspective Of Manufacturing Process, Rahmat Saptono

Makara Journal of Technology

The selection of materials for an engineering component is not only requested by its design function and shape, but also the sequence through which it is manufactured. The manufacturing operation of roller chains involves drawing and trimming processes aimed at producing semi-finished chain drives component with a well-standardized dimension. In addition to final combination of properties required by design constraints, the ability of materials to be formed into a desired shape and geometry without failure is also critical. The objective of materials selection should therefore involve additional attributes that are not typically accommodated by the standard procedure of materials selection. …

Non-Steady-State Approach #11;To Steady-State Kinetics: #11;Case Study Of H2s Oxidation By Oxygen, Andrey N. Zagoruiko, Vladimir V. Mokrinskii

Andrey N Zagoruiko

Non-steady-state kinetic models may be used for treatment of steady-state kinetic data in case when algebraic elaboration of steady-state kinetic equations is impossible or complicated. The proposed approach includes numerical integration of time-dependent differential equations until achievement of steady-state, resulting in possibility to numerically obtain the rate values for separate reaction stages for given composition of reaction mixture. The obtained non-steady-state model may be then applied in simulation of catalyst pellets and catalyst beds in research and engineering purposes. The case study demonstrates application of such approach for steady-state kinetic description of complicated reaction system of H2S oxidation by oxygen. …

Journal of Electrochemistry

In this work, potential_modulation method was used in two_step anodization process to make an AAO template with Y_type nanochannels. Then Y_type carbon nanotubes with controlled length and branch angle were prepared in the template based on chemical vapor decomposion (CVD) method with Co particles as catalyst and C2H2 as carbon source. The Y_type nanotube branches exhibit the angle distribution ranging from 20° to 120°. The results demonstrated that the oxidation potential should be responsible for the angles and length of the branches. Short pulse and high oxidation potential will result in the short and dense nanotube branches.

Thermodynamic Property Prediction For Solid Organic Compounds Based On Molecular Structure, Benjamin T. Goodman Nov 2003

Thermodynamic Property Prediction For Solid Organic Compounds Based On Molecular Structure, Benjamin T. Goodman

Theses and Dissertations

A knowledge of thermophysical properties is necessary for the design of all process units. Reliable property prediction methods are essential because reliable experimental data are often not available due to concerns about measurement difficulty, cost, scarcity, safety, or environment. In particular, there is a lack of prediction methods for solid properties. Predicted property values can also be used to fill holes in property databases to understand more fully compound characteristics. This work is a comprehensive analysis of the prediction methods available for five commonly needed solid properties. Where satisfactory methods are available, recommendations are made; where methods are unsatisfactory in …

Yieldlike Constitutive Transition In Shear Flow Of Entangled Polymeric Fluids, Prashant Tapadia, Shi-Qing Wang Nov 2003

Yieldlike Constitutive Transition In Shear Flow Of Entangled Polymeric Fluids, Prashant Tapadia, Shi-Qing Wang

College of Polymer Science and Polymer Engineering

We describe an unexpected constitutive transition in entangled polymer solutions. At and beyond a critical stress, the initial spatially homogeneous and well-entangled sample transforms from its entangled (coiled) state into a fully disentangled (stretched) state over a period during which the resulting shear rate increases in a spatially inhomogeneous fashion. In the mode of controlled shear rate, the sample exhibits a stress plateau over three decades. Flow birefringence and normal stress observations unravel additional features of these flow phenomena.

A Macrokinetic Study Of The High-Temperature Solid-Phase Titanium-Carbon Reaction, Julia Y. Kostagorva, Hendrik J. Viljoen, Alexander S. Shteinberg

Papers in Reaction Kinetics

An experimental method, electro thermal explosion (ETE), is used to measure the macro kinetic parameters of the high-temperature titanium/carbon reaction. Different stages of the reaction have been identified, but the focus of this study is on the reaction between solid titanium and solid carbon, i.e., prior to the melting of titanium. The reaction has high activation energy, and an electric current is used to heat the cylindrically shaped sample to a specified temperature. The current is shut off at a temperature below the melting point of titanium; any further temperature rise is only due to reaction. The output of the …

Deterministic Solutions For A Step-Growth Polymerization, Sungjae Choi, Xiangdong Liu, Delmar C. Timm

Papers in Molecular Chemistry

Chain topology, including branch node, chain link and cross-link dynamics that contribute to the number of elastically active strands and junctions, are calculated using purely deterministic derivations. Solutions are not coupled to population density distributions. An eigenzeit transformation assists in the conversion of expressions derived by chemical reaction principles from time to conversion space, yielding transport phenomena type expressions where the rate of change in the molar concentrations of branch nodes with respect to conversion is expressed as functions of the fraction of reactive sites on precursors and reactants. Analogies are hypothesized to exist in cross-linking space that effectively distribute …
