Pathways To Credentials: Does The Timing Of Earning An Industry Certification In High School Influence Postsecondary Educational Outcomes?, Elizabeth Glennie, Erich Lauff, Roger Studley, Ben Dalton
Journal of Research in Technical Careers
Earning industry certifications helps people prepare for jobs in a range of careers. Doing so in secondary school may help students prepare for college as well. Using administrative data on two cohorts of first-time 9th graders in Florida, we examined whether earning a certification was associated with postsecondary enrollment and degree attainment and whether the timing of the certification influenced that relationship. Earning a certification in high school prepared students for success in both 2-year and 4-year colleges. However, the patterns of certifications and college enrollment and degree attainment differed based on when students earned the certification. For early …

Exploring The Effect Of Cte Coursework And Work Experience On Adolescent Career Readiness, Albion Sumrell
University of New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Career readiness is an area of youth development that is often overlooked in secondary education. Preparing students for the professional world is especially important for high school students, who upon graduation, will have to decide to pursue postsecondary education or a career. Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs, which involve teaching youth employable knowledge and skills, have been shown to assist students in transitioning more seamlessly from high school to college and careers. Work experiences, such as jobs and internships, have also been found to support adolescent career readiness. Currently, there is not a widely used quantitative measure for assessing …

An Exploration Of Experiential Learning Practices Utilized By Stem Educators, Mark D. Threeton, Kyungin Kim
Experiential Learning & Teaching in Higher Education
Educators within applied STEM disciplines assert they promote the development of new knowledge, skills, and attitudes by integrating experiential education within their instruction. However, few studies have actually investigated this phenomenon. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to explore how applied STEM instructors of career and technical education define experiential learning and utilize it while teaching safety and health subjects. The results revealed that while almost all educators claimed to utilize experiential learning practices, essential modes of Kolb’s Experiential Learning Cycle (1984) were underutilized. The results would be useful for professionals interested in learning about authentic experiential education strategies.

The Devaluation Of Career Technical Education (Cte) By The Graduates Of Wonderwood High School, Jason J. Weiss
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In Georgia, high school graduates are expected to be college and career ready, however due to recent educational legislative changes the focus has been placed on being college ready. These modifications have led to a low number of graduates completing a Career Technical Education (CTE) pathway as well as a low number of graduates passing their CTE End-of-Pathway assessments and earning industry credentials. To assist in determining the factors that have led to the devaluation of CTE by Georgia graduates, a critical qualitative inquiry study was conducted on a sample of 13 graduates from Wonderwood High School, in South Heights, …

The Importance Of Earnings In Career Technical Education Field Of Study Choice, Karen S. Childers
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
The purpose of this mixed methods research study was to examine factors influencing community college Career Technical Education (CTE) students in their field of study choice. The problem was twofold: (1) Community college CTE performance metrics include earnings goals, but there is little research to inform the performance metric (Harrington, Mbomeda, & Casillas, 2018; Roberts, Leufgen, & Booth, 2018); and (2) CTE students, who are disproportionately economically disadvantaged, pursue fields of study that do not lead to a living wage (Bahr, 2010; Booth & Bahr, 2012; Zhang & Oymak, 2018).
For this within-stage mixed model design (Johnson & Onwuegbuzie, 2004), …

Mississippi Choices And The Influence Of Career And Technical Education, Charish Rene Pierce
Mississippi Choices And The Influence Of Career And Technical Education, Charish Rene Pierce
Dissertations
Mississippi counselors serve in a variety of roles in order to meet the needs of all students. The role of the school counselor is to execute efforts to address each student’s academic, personal/social, and career development needs (ASCA, 2005). Middle and high school counselors are often tasked with activities that do not align with national and state standards for school counseling. Thus, these activities generate very little time for activities such as the Choices program and career development.
This study examined the middle and high school counselors’ usage of the Choices program. In addition, the research study explored middle and …
