Teachers' Perceptions About The Types, Quality, And Impact Of Their Job-Embedded Professional Development Experiences, Delilah Mitchell Dec 2013

Teachers' Perceptions About The Types, Quality, And Impact Of Their Job-Embedded Professional Development Experiences, Delilah Mitchell

Dissertations

This study was designed to determine eighth grade teachers’ perceptions of the impact, quality, and types of job-embedded professional development activities they have participated in and the relationship to student achievement in language arts, math, or science. The researcher identified school districts with 50% or more of their eighth grade students scoring proficient or advanced on all three areas of Mississippi’s Curriculum Test, Second Edition (MCT2). Sixty-four eighth grade language arts, math, or science teachers who had been at their current school at least two years completed a questionnaire created by the researcher. Multiple Linear Regression and Pearson’s Correlation were …

Physics First: Impact On Sat Math Scores, Craig Earl Bouma Oct 2013

Physics First: Impact On Sat Math Scores, Craig Earl Bouma

LMU/LLS Theses and Dissertations

Improving science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education has become a national priority and the call to modernize secondary science has been heard. A Physics First (PF) program with the curriculum sequence of physics, chemistry, and biology (PCB) driven by inquiry- and project-based learning offers a viable alternative to the traditional curricular sequence (BCP) and methods of teaching, but requires more empirical evidence. This study determined impact of a PF program (PF-PCB) on math achievement (SAT math scores) after the first two cohorts of students completed the PF-PCB program at Matteo Ricci High School (MRHS) and provided more quantitative data …

Detection Of Salmonella Enterica, Escherichia Coli O157 And Listeria Monocytogenes Through Bead Based Magpix® Fluidics, Karamveer Singh, Francisco Fernandez, Sonam Sahni, Alejandro Calderón-Urrea Aug 2013

Detection Of Salmonella Enterica, Escherichia Coli O157 And Listeria Monocytogenes Through Bead Based Magpix® Fluidics, Karamveer Singh, Francisco Fernandez, Sonam Sahni, Alejandro Calderón-Urrea

STAR Program Research Presentations

The research is testing the limits of detection and multiplexing with the use of three pathogens with the machine created from Luminex called Magpix. The pathogens are Salmonella enterica, Listeria monocytogenes, and Escherichia Coli O157. The gene that is being focused on for each pathogen is invA for Salmonella, hlyA for listeria, and hlyA for Escherichia Coli. In this research, we started with prepared probes that were attached to the magnetic microsphere beads. Then we extracted and amplify the DNA. Furthermore, the probes were combined to the amplified DNA and used this in Magpix which gave a corresponding MFI value.

Northeast Tennessee Educators’ Perception Of Stem Education Implementation, Kristin Turner Aug 2013

Northeast Tennessee Educators’ Perception Of Stem Education Implementation, Kristin Turner

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A quantitative nonexperimental survey study was developed to investigate Northeast Tennessee K-8 educators’ perceptions of STEM education. This study was an examination of current perceptions of STEM education. Perceived need, current implementation practices, access to STEM resources, definition of STEM, and the current condition of STEM in Northeast Tennessee were also examined. The participating school districts are located in the Northeast Region of Tennessee: Bristol City Schools, Hamblen County Schools, Johnson City Schools, Johnson County Schools, Kingsport City Schools, Sullivan County Schools, and Washington County Schools. Educational professionals including both administrators and teachers in the elementary and/or middle school setting …

The Effect Of Single Gender Instruction On Eighth Grade Students' Mathematics Achievement, David Hammel Jul 2013

The Effect Of Single Gender Instruction On Eighth Grade Students' Mathematics Achievement, David Hammel

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

n the research study, this investigator utilized a non-experimental, causal-comparative design (ex post facto) with archival data to determine the real impact single gender instruction had on eighth grade students' mathematics achievement. The purpose of this study was to quantitatively analyze the benefits of single gender mathematics instruction for eighth grade male and female students, when compared against traditional coeducational instruction. Specifically, the researcher compared students instructed in single gender eighth grade mathematics classes with students taught in traditional coeducational classes by analyzing fall vs. spring Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) computerized mathematics test score means. Additionally, honors vs. non-honors …

The Message 2.0: Perceptions Of Success From Members Of The Founding Class Of Mc Squared Stem High School, Jeffrey D. Mcclellan Jun 2013

The Message 2.0: Perceptions Of Success From Members Of The Founding Class Of Mc Squared Stem High School, Jeffrey D. Mcclellan

Dissertations

This dissertation examines the methods of learning from the student’s perspective in order to understand what made the first graduating class of MC Squared successful. The conceptual model of student success composed of non-academic factors of motivation, social connectedness, and self-management was used for the lens from which to understand the six students in depth. Through the research, it was uncovered that diversified learning environments, a mastery based assessment system, and an unwavering acceptance of students within a challenging and supportive environment are essential to the success achieved at MC Squared STEM High School. Lastly, the seminal contribution of this …

Predictive Effects Of Absence, Gender, And Lunch Status On Math And Literacy Achievement, Megan Witonski May 2013

Predictive Effects Of Absence, Gender, And Lunch Status On Math And Literacy Achievement, Megan Witonski

Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to determine if any predictive effects exist between absence, gender, lunch status, and math and literacy achievement on exams. While research supported the predictive effects of absence, gender, and lunch status on achievement there was inadequate data to determine which predictor played a more significant role.

A quantitative, regression strategy was used to analyze data from students in a rural school in northwest Arkansas. All students in this rural district who had taken the Arkansas Augmented Assessment in math and literacy required under the Arkansas accountability requirements comprised the sample for this study. The …

Building Leadership Capacity For Development And Sharing Of Mathematics Learning Resources Across Disciplines And Universities, Anne Porter, Sue Denny Dec 2012

Building Leadership Capacity For Development And Sharing Of Mathematics Learning Resources Across Disciplines And Universities, Anne Porter, Sue Denny

Associate Professor Anne Porter

Executive Summary
Mathematical and statistical skills underpin students’ success in many university courses. Australia wide there are challenges faced by every tertiary institution as students enter the university with diverse mathematics backgrounds and skills. Inadequate mathematical skills leave students ill equipped to handle the mathematics rich courses in which they enroll. These students need mathematics learning support that is often difficult to provide due to scarce resources. To address this issue the University of Wollongong (UoW) has developed the necessary infrastructure and initiated a Share World collection of mathematics and statistics learning support video resources. These resources, available under a …
