Differences in alkali metal reactivity with water are often explained in terms of first ionization energy trends in the Periodic Table. The reasons for the difference are explored in terms of the thermodynamics in each case and De Berg shows that differences in alkali metal reactivity with water are more appropriately explained in terms of the kinetics of the reactions.
