NC State’s involvement in the NSF-sponsored SUCCEED Coalition has led to a number of changes to the freshman year of the engineering curriculum as reported previously (e.g., ASEE 1999, Porter, et al.). An explicit objective of these changes was to retain in engineering those students who were qualified and interested in engineering, but were leaving engineering for other reasons. While a number of isolated innovations have been studied and have demonstrated positive benefit, this study looks at each freshman cohort from 1987 through 1998 to evaluate changes in retention in engineering during that period. The goal of Project ExCEL, the Extended Classroom for Enhanced Learning, is to bring the capabilities of Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) into elementary and secondary classrooms. We have developed an entirely web-based interface to allow schools to control a modern SEM. The web interface allows a remote user complete control of all the operating parameters of the microscope, including stage movement and x-ray chemical analysis. Such total control currently is not available on any other system. Fifteen schools had students competing in six different academic competitions during the SAVMA Symposium. Events held on Friday, March 9, 2001 included anatomylhistology, microbiology/parasitology, equine aging, breed identification, and bovine palpation. Saturday morning's SAVMA Challenge, the symposium's final academic event, saw six schools compete for SAVMA's biggest team trophy.

Students interested in learning more about complementary modalities of treatment in veterinary medicine were provided with ample opportunity at SAVMA Symposium 2001. Lectures and wetlabs were presented that introduced audiences and participants to some basic techniques and theories in three rapidly emerging areas: chiropractic therapy, massage and rehabilitation therapy, and acupuncture. Dr. Pedro Rivera of the Healing Oasis Wellness Center provided instruction about chiropractic and massage therapy. After long days of challenging wetlabs, stimulating lectures and grueling competitions, all of the guests at Symposium gathered on the floor of Hilton Coliseum for an evening of fun and relaxation. The first evening was a "Beach-Luau" theme hosted by Purina. On July 1, 2000, Dr. Richard Ross stepped down from his duties as dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine to fill his new role as dean of the College of Agriculture here at Iowa State University. Since October 1, Dr. Norman Cheville, formerly head of the Department of Veterinary Pathology, has been serving as interim dean of the college. Meanwhile, the university began its search for the right person to lead the College of Veterinary Medicine into the 21st century.

He will be sadly missed but fondly remembered by the faculty and students at Iowa State. Dr. Kluge received his B.S. (agriculture) and D.V.M. from the University of Missouri, his M.S. from Iowa State, and his Ph.D. in pathology from George Washington University in Washington, D.C.

That Wednesday morning started way too early for the middle of spring break. But this was no ordinary spring break for Iowa State veterinary students. Delegates from all the vet schools would begin arriving at any moment marking the start of the SAVMA Symposium. Dozens of Iowa Staters were receiving last minute instructions along with hand-held radios to help keep everyone in touch, or at least to make them feel they had some control over what was to come. This was the last moment before the fun began, and the craziness didn't stop until late Sunday night.

Engineering faculty at Iowa State University have worked collaboratively with teacher education faculty since 1996 to offer an undergraduate course entitled Toying with Technology to elementary and secondary education majors1, 2. The development of this technology literacy course provided students with an appreciation for the technological innovations that surround them. Studies have shown that students form many of their overall career and educational attitudes as early as elementary school. Elementary (and even secondary) schoolteachers who have an appreciation for technology will likely convey that appreciation to their students. Many students encounter difficulties engaging with laboratory-based instruction, and reviews of research have indicated that the value of such instruction is not clearly evident. Traditional forms of writing associated with laboratory activities are commonly in a style used by professional scientists to communicate developed explanations. Students probably lack the interpretative skills of a professional, and writing in this style may not support students in learning how to develop scientific explanations. The purpose of this study was to examine preschool teachers' verbal interactions with children during morning self-selection time. Naturalistic (Day 1) and experimental (Day 2) designs were used to provide empirical evidence of the availability of science activities and accessible science materials in preschool classrooms. The participants were 20 head teachers of 3- to 5-year-old preschoolers employed in central Iowa child care centers. Each teacher was videotaped for two consecutive days during morning self-selection time.
