The Need For Creativity In The Science Classroom, Lowell Wiele
The Need For Creativity In The Science Classroom, Lowell Wiele
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
To recognize the need for creativity in the classroom as one of the growing concerns in the educational community today is not difficult. When the various teaching methods in science are evaluated, the highly pronounced need for more creativity in science instruction is evident. Few teachers, it seems, experiment actively with teaching techniques and curriculum materials. Most find what works for them and stick with it, and, often, this means teaching science as a lecture course (with some group discussion and a few laboratory experiences). Beginning teachers tend to imitate the persons they considered to have been their best teachers. …

Integrating Culture And Understanding Of Science Through Traditional Fairy Tale Format, Patrice Wright, Gerry D. Haukoos
Integrating Culture And Understanding Of Science Through Traditional Fairy Tale Format, Patrice Wright, Gerry D. Haukoos
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
Success in science results from a variety of experiences and characteristics. Some come from within the individual while others are in the environment. ~ For Native American Indians, achievement in science based upon traditional Western education and national testing traditions does not reflect American Indian knowledge of science or natural events around them. Over the centuries, American Indian cultures have exhibited a closeness with nature, even to the point of considering their relationship spiritual. Cajete (1986) reported that expressions of the science thought process are abundant in historical and traditional American Indian cultures. He indicated those processes have ranged from …

Recently, we have, as a nation, come to realize the vital need for technology literacy among our citizens if we are to cope in a global society. Iowa educational leaders are striving to gain a competitive edge m this area. Working for this edge, the Iowa Department of Education has hired a technology consultant, and guides are being refined to help educators address the topic in their curricula. Standards have been adopted by the State Board of Education relative to telecommunications in Iowa classrooms.

Editor's Corner - A Letter To The Editor: Commentary On A Recent Survey Of Iowa Chemistry Teachers, Erwin W. Richter
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
In the fall of 1989, I conducted a survey of chemistry teachers in the state of Iowa to gather information on the current conditions of chemistry teaching and the continuing education needs of chemistry teachers. This survey asked chemistry teachers about their training in science and chemistry, the percentage of students in their schools who elect to take chemistry, the text books in current use, the amount of time spent in laboratory experimentation and what they saw as their greatest need for update workshops.

Recycling Paper To Save Landfills And Trees, William H. Gilbert
Recycling Paper To Save Landfills And Trees, William H. Gilbert
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
While some groups want to save tropical rain forests or marshy wetlands, other conservation-minded groups are interested in judiciously using sanitary landfills, or at least lengthening their lifetime by recycling paper (Hovelson, 1989). The Rolling Hills Audubon Society (RHAS), centered in Indianola (Warren County), sponsored two newspaper collections during 1989 in hopes of raising funds and reducing waste paper going to the South Central Iowa Sanitary Landfill located east of Winterset and south of Highway 92 in Madison County.

Women And Minorities In Technical Courses In Iowa, Myrna Whigham
Women And Minorities In Technical Courses In Iowa, Myrna Whigham
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
Recent national reports indicate that math and science education is in a crisis in the United States (Changing America, 1988 and Women and Minorities in Science and Engineering, 1988). Concern has been expressed by many national groups that we must attract and keep more young people in the pipeline to meet future needs for scientists and engineers. Because the need for scientists is projected to increase by 45 percent, for engineers 32 percent and for technicians 36 percent, but the population of 18-24 year olds entering the labor force is expected to decline, the U.S. must attract more women and …

Bug Zoo, Martha Voyles, Deborah Charnetski
Bug Zoo, Martha Voyles, Deborah Charnetski
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
We envisioned a conversation something like this taking place at the dinner table of one of our students who had read a chapter on animal habitats that day in school. This imaginary conversation was the impetus for the idea of a classroom "bug zoo." Our goal was to supplement the school district's curriculum with activities that emphasized science process skills and promoted the enjoyment of science and scientific activity. Because we felt that the skills necessary for reading nonfiction are a critical aspect of science instruction, we were committed to using our district's text. We hoped our project would help …
