Weaving A Science Story: Narratives And Language As Tools In The Science Classroom, Claudia Moncada Jan 2023

Weaving A Science Story: Narratives And Language As Tools In The Science Classroom, Claudia Moncada

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

The Standards of Learning (SOL) for Virginia public schools, and other national standards, set expectations for student achievements throughout the school year for many subjects, including science. Because educators must prepare their students for end-of-course exams based on the SOL, classroom discussion and deeper understanding of topics can be lessened. Middle school students show declines in motivations and attitudes toward science, and challenges are greater for English-learning (EL) students. Incorporating storytelling into science classrooms can be helpful to EL and non-EL students because it presents challenging topics and vocabulary in a simpler and more engaging way than traditional textbooks. This …

A Program Evaluation Of Middle School Science Teachers’ Perceptions And Instructional Practices With The Next Generation Science Standards: Science And Engineering Practices, Antoinette Marie Glenn Jan 2019

A Program Evaluation Of Middle School Science Teachers’ Perceptions And Instructional Practices With The Next Generation Science Standards: Science And Engineering Practices, Antoinette Marie Glenn

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

The Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) is the most recent reform in science education across the United States. The NGSS demands a shift in both teaching and learning. Yet there is no direction on how teachers are to implement this shift in their classrooms. This mixed-methods study examined 12 middle school teachers’ perceptions and the instructional practices within the NGSS Science and Engineering Practices (SEPs) by using interviews and classroom observations. Findings suggest that there was a shift in instructional practices and a varying degree of implementation of the eight SEPs. The data analysis identified ongoing needs related to specific …

Investigating The Relationships Among Primary Teachers' Math Profile, Math Teaching Efficacy, And Math Content Pedagogical Knowledge, Theresa Marie Roettinger

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

Kindergarten, first and second grade teachers play an important role in the development of a student's understanding of mathematics. Consequently, in order to improve student achievement in mathematics, it is important to investigate the relationships that may exist among primary teachers' math profile, math teaching efficacy, and math pedagogy and content knowledge. Participants completed an online survey that included the Math Teaching Efficacy Belief Instrument (MTEBI) and Math Knowledge for Teaching (MKT) items. Participants provided math profile data through academic demographic questions.;Two-hundred seven respondents completed the survey. Analysis of the data included descriptive statistics, chi-square test of independence, and Spearman …

Math Talent Development Of Elementary School Students: The Relationship Of Gender, Math Motivation, And Goal Orientation To Math Achievement, Ann Haimburger Colorado

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

Research has established that motivation is an important factor of student achievement. Many researchers in the field of gifted education consider motivation to be a crucial component of giftedness, yet the literature base for motivation and math talent development within gifted populations is scarce. This descriptive study used a within-group design to measure the math motivation, math achievement, and goal orientation of high-ability 5 th grade math students to elucidate the relationships among motivation, achievement, goal orientation, and gender. Findings indicated that math achievement, math motivation, and goal orientation were similar for both genders; students had high math achievement yet …

Teachers' Perceived Influences On Technology Integration Decisions: A Grounded Theory On Instructional Decisions After Professional Development, Karen Larsen Greenhaus

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

This qualitative grounded theory study explored teachers' instructional decisions around planning and practice for technology integration after participation in professional development. The purpose of this study was to determine how a long-term hybrid professional development experience influenced, if at all, math teachers' instructional decisions to integrate The Geometer's Sketchpad into their planning and classroom practice. There are several components for effective professional development suggested in the research literature. Professional development that is sustained over long periods of time, connected to teachers' practice, and provides active engagement in learning by participating teachers' is more likely to result in effective implementation of …

Teaching Slope Of A Line Using The Graphing Calculator As A Tool For Discovery Learning, Fiona Costello Nichols

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

Discovery learning is one of the instructional strategies sometimes used to teach Algebra I. However, little research is available that includes investigation of the effects of incorporating the graphing calculator technology with discovery learning. This study was initiated to investigate two instructional approaches for teaching slope of a line in Algebra I. One approach involves the graphing calculator as a tool in a discovery learning setting. The second approach involves using the graphing calculator to reinforce traditional instruction. An urban public school division located in southeastern Virginia was the site for this investigation. Two Algebra I classes from each of …
