The Effects Of The Summer Forest Fires On Yellowstone National Park, Jack De Golia Jan 1988

The Effects Of The Summer Forest Fires On Yellowstone National Park, Jack De Golia

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Throughout the summer, the nation watched as fires swept through Yellowstone National Park. Media coverage made people from all parts of the United States aware of the change that was taking place in Wyoming. Concerns ranged from the effect of the fires on the park, its attractions (such as the geysers) and the animals to worries of what the smoke being released by the burning trees would do to the atmosphere.

Science Learning Matters: Iowa Within The Context Of The Naep Assessments, Jack A. Gerlovich Jan 1988

Science Learning Matters: Iowa Within The Context Of The Naep Assessments, Jack A. Gerlovich

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

The National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) report (Mullis and Jenkins, 1988) states that "science exerts a pervasive influence on the quality of the lives of all citizens, and that it is essential that all productive citizens be able to understand and resolve the increasing number of societal problems related to science and technology." Our national position as a world leader is dependent upon such knowledge and skills. In Iowa, a state striving to improve its national and world economic status, these NAEP analyses are critical.

Preparing Mammal Skulls For Classroom Use, Donald J. Perschau Jan 1988

Preparing Mammal Skulls For Classroom Use, Donald J. Perschau

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Classroom materials for student use are very expensive to purchase from biological supply houses. In many cases, teachers are left with two choices when it comes to laboratory materials, either find some way to produce their own or do without. Preserved and live specimens fall into this category particularly with respect to the higher vertebrates. While it may be impossible, or at least impractical, to keep a suitable number of birds or mammals, it is possible and may even be preferred to study skins, skeletal and other preserved material. Mammal skulls are easy to collect, prepare and preserve for use …

Loess Hills: A National Natural Landmark, Jean C. Prior

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Loess is one of the most common geologic materials found on the land surface in the Midwest. This can also be said for the lower Mississippi Valley, the Palouse district of eastern Washington, central and eastern Europe, the Ukraine of southwestern Russia and eastern China. The word itself is German in origin, and as late as the 1860s was regarded as a provincial name for deposits along the Rhine Valley. Loess, glacial history, native grasslands and productive agricultural regions are linked together across the mid-latitudes of the northern hemisphere.

Editor's Corner - Support And Growth Revisited, Carl W. Bollwinkel

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

The editorial in the Autumn 1987 issue of ISTJ was entitled "Support and Growth." Growth for ISTJ was deemed essential. Support was lacking in some essential aspects. As editor, I had decided it was time to step aside so that the Academy could find the support and provide the opportunity for growth. Since that editorial was written, support has been found and I am pleased to be able to accept reappointment as ISTJ editor. Revisiting the topic of support and growth now seems important.
