Enlightened By Shadow, Nancy Frazier Jan 1985

Enlightened By Shadow, Nancy Frazier

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

In the golden age of radio, listeners were told that "only The Shadow knows." 1.,amont Cranston, better known as The Shadow, was the enlightened character with all of the answers to solve repeated mysteries. The Shadow is no longer with us, but the use of shadow puppetry in the elementary classroom can help solve mysteries and bring "life" to the study of light and shadow. Toe use of shadow puppets should allow students to achieve the following objectives: to create shadows by putting objects between a light source and a screen or surface; to recognize objects by their shape; to …

Changes In Science Enrollments And Graduation Requirements In Iowa Public High Schools, 1973-1983, Jack A. Gerlovich Jan 1985

Changes In Science Enrollments And Graduation Requirements In Iowa Public High Schools, 1973-1983, Jack A. Gerlovich

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

In recent years, public education has received stringent criticism for its performance in producing students who have a very low level of competency in some subjects (National Commission on Excellence in Education, 1983). The media and various professional organizations have conceded that students in the United States have, in recent years, performed poorly in science when compared with students from other developed nations (Jacobson and Doran, 1985). Alleged reasons for poor performance on the part of U.S. students include shortage of qualified teachers, apathetic or negative public attitude toward schools, changing sociological and educational roles of the parent and ~ …

Iowa Meteorites, Larry A. Kelsey Jan 1985

Iowa Meteorites, Larry A. Kelsey

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Every day, the earth is bombarded by an estimated 100 tons of interplanetary debris. Most of this is produced by micrometeorites that vaporize high in the atmosphere and slowly settle to earth as a fine dust. Only a rare once-a-day small meteorite survives its passage through the atmosphere to impact the earth. Unfortunately, the vast majority of these go undetected or undiscovered. As a result, it is an important event when a sizable meteorite fall occurs which is well observed and documented. Interestingly, Iowa appears to have been blessed with an inordinate number of these falls within recorded history. In …

An experimental component asks students to carry out a research project. The course is taught by Dr. Paul Christiansen, Cornell College, and Dr. Richard Lampe, Buena Vista College, with help from Jean Prior from the Iowa Geological Survey.

Editor's Corner - Letter To The Editor: Image Versus Reality, James J. Hungerford

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

When reading a recent issue of the Kappan, I came across an article which made such significant points that I would like to call them to the attention of Iowa science teachers. Evidence indicates many political and community leaders subscribe to images of reality that have little to do with the available evidence about the nature of public education.

Factors That Do Not Separate Effective And Ineffective Science Teachers, Robert E. Yager, Patrick Ibe Jan 1985

Factors That Do Not Separate Effective And Ineffective Science Teachers, Robert E. Yager, Patrick Ibe

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

With only two exceptions, no significant differences are found · the profiles of most effective and least effective teachers. Druva and Anderson (1983) recently reported the results of a meta analysis of significant research in science teacher education. Their findings suggest that most factors believed to impact the teaching performance of science instructors do not, in fact, play a very important role. Despite these findings, many science educators continue to accept the same old assumptions and beliefs concerning what is needed to improve science teacher education programs. As the National Science Foundation expands programs in response to new appropriations and …
